Technology

Summit Series™
The North Face's pinnacle mountaineering line — engineered with athletes for high-altitude, fast-and-light objectives
FUTURELIGHT™ 3L
Nanospun membrane delivering breathable-waterproof performance in a fully seam-sealed 3-layer construction
Cleaning
Close all zippers before washing. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild technical detergent — avoid bleach, fabric softener, and enzyme-based detergents, which clog the nanospun FUTURELIGHT™ membrane, strip the non-PFC DWR finish, and degrade the bonded cuffs over time. Turn the jacket inside out before washing to protect the reflective logos and the reflective bar on the lower back from abrasion.
Drying
Tumble dry on low to medium heat for 20–30 minutes after washing — the gentle heat reactivates the non-PFC DWR finish on the face fabric, restoring water beading and reducing how hard the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane has to work. Avoid high heat, which can damage the recycled nylon fibers, delaminate the 3L construction, and warp the bonded cuffs and zippers.
DWR Maintenance
The non-PFC DWR finish wears gradually with use and wash cycles. If the face fabric starts wetting out (water soaking into the nylon instead of beading), wash the jacket first and tumble dry on low to medium heat to reactivate the finish. If beading still doesn't return, apply a DWR refresh spray rated for FUTURELIGHT™ / 3-layer waterproof membranes to restore water repellency.
FUTURELIGHT™ 3L Membrane
The nanospun FUTURELIGHT™ membrane in the 3L construction needs to breathe — don't dry-clean, don't use solvents, and don't store the jacket sealed wet. Air out and fully dry after every outing. The 7D x 15D 71 g/m² recycled nylon face is among the lightest waterproof-shell weight classes on the market, which means the 3L laminate is more delicate than heavier shells — avoid abrasive surfaces, sharp edges, and contact with Velcro®.
Bonded Cuffs
The bonded cuffs with pre-tensioned encased elastic are bonded (not sewn) to the shell — they cannot be repaired if the bond fails. Avoid pulling the sleeves off by the cuff opening, never roll the sleeves tightly, and don't store the jacket compressed in a way that creases the cuff-to-sleeve seam. The encased elastic keeps the cuff in place over a watch GPS or running gloves without binding.
Two-Way CF Zipper
The two-way, reverse-coil, water-resistant center front zip lets you vent from the bottom for hip-belt clearance and heat dumping. The water-resistant coating wears over time; if the zipper starts leaking through in heavy rain, apply a fresh zipper-waterproofing treatment to restore full water resistance. Brush the teeth with a soft brush periodically to clear grit, and lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant if the slider stiffens.
Adjustable Hood
The adjustable hood with cinch-cord is designed to seal over a running cap or helmet. Tighten the cinch for cold/wet running and loosen for ventilation. Don't store the hood cinched tightly — the cord tension can stretch the hood face fabric over time. If the cord lock slips, replace it before using the jacket in heavy rain.
Reflective Logos & Bar
The reflective logos (chest + back) and the dedicated reflective bar on the lower back are critical for low-light visibility on early-morning starts and dusk finishes — inspect them periodically for wear, peeling, or fading. Wash inside-out to protect them from abrasion. Harsh solvents and bleach will strip the reflective coating; avoid contact with sunscreen, DEET, and insect repellent on the reflective surfaces.
Stows-in-Pocket Compression
The jacket stows into the secure-zip pocket on the right side for pack-and-pocket storage — but the 7D x 15D 71 g/m² recycled nylon face is delicate when folded for long periods. Avoid leaving the jacket compressed in its pocket for weeks at a time — the nanospun FUTURELIGHT™ laminate can crack at sharp folds. After pulling it out of the pocket, smooth out the fabric and let it loft before wearing.
Pack Strap & Branch Abrasion
The 7D x 15D 71 g/m² recycled nylon face is light enough to feel weightless on a run but is more abrasion-sensitive than a heavier 3L shell. Inspect for scuffing after long runs with a hydration vest or running pack; shoulder-strap lines on the chest area are the highest-risk zone. Clip any snags with sharp scissors to prevent runs in the lightweight weave — do not pull on snags.
Storage
Hang on a wide hanger or loosely stuff in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane over time and fades the shell. Don't compress the jacket under heavy gear for extended periods — long compression can crack the nanospun membrane and reduce breathability. Confirm the jacket is fully dry and the stow pocket is unzipped before storage.
