Technology

GORE-TEX®
W.L. Gore's industry-standard waterproof breathable membrane — fully seam-sealed for guaranteed waterproof performance
GORE-TEX 2L
Two-layer construction pairing the GORE-TEX membrane with the outer face fabric for a versatile, durable waterproof shell
WINDWALL™
Wind-resistant fabric used in the below-shin lining zone for additional warmth and moisture management
FLASHDRY-XD™
TNF's extreme-durability moisture management — pulls moisture away from skin and resists abrasion in high-wear zones (below-shin lining)
Cleaning
Machine wash cold (30 °C) on a gentle cycle with a mild technical detergent. Use two rinse cycles to fully flush the detergent residue and any loosened DWR — bleach, fabric softener, and stain remover clog the GORE-TEX® membrane, strip the non-PFC DWR finish, and can degrade the WINDWALL™ lining with FLASHDRY-XD™ and the recycled polyester taffeta / knit mesh.
Drying
Tumble dry on low to medium heat for 20–30 minutes or hang to dry. Low tumble heat reactivates the DWR finish on both the body GORE-TEX 2L face and the below-shin WINDWALL™ lining. High heat can damage the GORE-TEX membrane, the FLASHDRY-XD™ treatment on the lower lining, the metal shank-button closure, and the overlay-tape detailing on the hand pockets.
DWR Maintenance
The non-PFC DWR finish on both the GORE-TEX 2L body and the WINDWALL™ below-shin lining wears with use and wash cycles. When water stops beading on either zone, wash the pants and tumble dry on low to medium heat to reactivate. If beading still doesn't return, apply a DWR refresh spray — GORE-TEX® brands their own; for the WINDWALL™ zone, use a spray rated for nylon/elastane blends.
GORE-TEX® Membrane
The 150D 161 g/m² GORE-TEX 2L membrane is the waterproof core — never dry-clean or use solvents. Air the pants out after every wear so body moisture evaporates from the inside. Confirm all seams are fully sealed (no lifted seam tape) before wearing — exposed tape means the pants need TNF's repair service, not a DIY reseal.
Inner-Thigh Vents
The inner-thigh vents with mesh lining regulate temperature while keeping snow out — keep the mesh clear of debris and inspect it periodically for tears (torn mesh = snow ingestion). Open and close the vents fully during each use; partial opening can allow snow to enter the lining layers. Brush the vent teeth with a soft toothbrush if grit accumulates.
Drawcord & Hem Routing
The drawcord at the hem has a routing system to manage excess cord — always tuck the excess cord into the routing channel before securing or the loose tail can snag on branches, lift towers, and binding hardware. If the drawcord frays, replace it before the next use to maintain its hem-cinch function.
Hem Gaiters & Gripper Elastic
The hem gaiters with gripper elastic seal snow out over ski and snowboard boots. Always tuck the gaiter fully inside the boot shell or binding before each run. After wet or snowy days, dry the gaiter fully before storing. Don't cut the gripper elastic if it frays — replace the gaiter to keep its snow-sealing function intact.
Edge Guards
The edge guards at the hem are the first contact zone with ski and snowboard edges — inspect them after each season for cuts or thinning. The no-kickpatch leg silhouette (designed for clean drape over boots) means the edge guards carry the full abrasion burden. If the edge guards wear through, replace them through TNF's repair service to protect the GORE-TEX 2L membrane underneath.
Stretchy Back Waistband
The gathered, stretchy back-of-waistband panel gives extra comfort and adjustability — don't over-pull when putting the pants on or taking them off. Avoid contact with hook-and-loop (Velcro®) and rough surfaces that can snag the stretch knit. Inspect the gathers' stitching after each season.
Hand & Back Pocket Zippers
The covered, secure-zip hand pockets and right-side back pocket have overlay-tape detailing — the tape is bonded to the face fabric and can lift under harsh chemical treatment. Brush the zipper teeth with a soft toothbrush to clear grit, and lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant if the slider stiffens. Don't force the zipper past its stop — it can damage the overlay-tape stitching.
Metal Shank-Button Closure
The zip-fly with metal shank-button closure can corrode over time if exposed to salt and sweat. Rinse with fresh water after resort or backcountry days and dry fully. Confirm the shank button is fully seated before each run — a loose button stress-loads the buttonhole.
FLASHDRY-XD™ Lining
The 70D 139 g/m² WINDWALL™ below-shin lining with FLASHDRY-XD™ is the high-wear moisture-management zone — it resists abrasion and pulls moisture away from skin next to the boot. Avoid bleach and harsh detergents; FLASHDRY-XD™ is a chemical treatment that breaks down under aggressive laundry. Tumble dry low to fully restore the moisture-management performance.
Repair & Professional Services
For torn fabric, lifted seam tape, worn edge guards, or worn gaiter gripper elastic, The North Face offers repair services under their limited lifetime guarantee. Don't machine-dry the pants if the seam tape is visibly lifted — the agitation can peel the tape further. Store the pants with seams visible so you can spot damage at the end of each season.
Storage
Hang on a wide hanger or fold loosely in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure degrades the GORE-TEX® membrane over time, fades the TNF Black face fabric, and breaks down the FLASHDRY-XD™ treatment. Don't store the pants compressed under heavy gear for long periods — folds can crack the membrane. Confirm the pants are fully dry before storage to prevent mildew in the knit mesh lining.
