Summit Series VECTIV™ Pro 3 Shoes
Footwear · Ultra-Distance Trail Racing

Designed to deliver uncompromising top-level performance, the Summit Series VECTIV™ Pro 3 are the ultimate ultra-distance trail-racing shoes. Members of The North Face athlete team have worn the Summit VECTIV™ Pro 3 and reached the podium at some of the most competitive trail races in the world. They feature VECTIV™ 3.0 technology with a dual-stacked VECTIV™ plate system along with super-high-rebound DREAM foam to give you true performance whether you're training or racing.

VECTIV™ 3.0 Stacked-Plate System
High-performance VECTIV 3.0 stacked-plate system features a full-length carbon-fiber propulsion plate integrated with a recycled carbon-fiber stability top plate — dual-stacked design delivers high-level propulsion AND stability on varied trail terrain so you don't sacrifice one for the other on technical descents
DREAM Nitrogen-TPU Midsole
Full-length ultralight DREAM nitrogen-TPU foam midsole features the high-performance PEBA/EVA compound for super-high rebound and longevity — nitrogen-TPU is lighter, more responsive, and more durable than standard EVA midsole foams; maintains its bounce-back characteristics longer over the life of the shoe
DREAM Foam Insert Under the Foot
DREAM foam insert below the foot increases long-distance propulsion and comfort — adds an extra layer of high-rebound cushioning directly under the stride path, reducing energy loss on long ultras where fatigue compounds over dozens of miles
Rockered Midsole Geometry
Engineered midsole geometry creates long-lasting forward propulsion — the rockered shape rolls the foot from heel-strike to toe-off efficiently, reducing the energy your calves spend on each stride and preserving leg strength over ultra-distance efforts
37 mm Heel Stack / 6 mm Offset
37 mm heel stack height (midsole + outsole) with a 6 mm heel/toe offset — substantial cushioning for ultra-distance protection without the bulk and weight of max-stack shoes; 6 mm offset is more efficient than 8–12 mm options for athletes with a midfoot-to-forefoot strike
4 mm More Cushioning Than Pro 2
Has 4 mm more midsole cushioning than the Summit VECTIV Pro 2 — meaningful upgrade over the previous generation for ultra-distance athletes who need the extra protection across hundreds of miles of cumulative race impact
SURFACE CTRL™ Rubber Outsole
Durable SURFACE CTRL™ rubber outsole is optimized for weight and versatility — the compound balances grip, longevity, and minimal weight for racing, while 3.5 mm lugs are designed specifically for varied trail terrain (not deep mud, but capable across dirt, gravel, rock, and roots)
Regenerative Rubber Sourcing
10% of the outsole rubber is sourced from smallholder farmers committed to agroforestry principles and regenerative agricultural practices — part of TNF's broader effort to reduce the carbon footprint of trail-racing footwear and support rubber-farming communities
Seamless Breathable Upper
Seamless, breathable upper is supportive, water-repellent, and quick-drying — no sewn seams to rub against the foot during long efforts; water-repellent treatment sheds light moisture and puddles without the heat retention of a fully waterproof membrane
Internal Skeletal Support Frame
Lightweight internal skeletal support frame and integrated tongue wings provide a precise foothold — the frame wraps the foot laterally to lock the heel and midfoot in place during technical terrain, while the tongue wings eliminate the gap that creates pressure points over long miles

Cleaning After Trail Runs
Remove loose dirt from the upper and outsole with a soft brush after each run. For mud, rinse under cold running water while brushing the lugs — focus on the SURFACE CTRL™ outsole lugs to prevent compacted dirt from reducing traction. Do not machine wash — the agitation and spin cycle damage the VECTIV™ 3.0 dual-stacked carbon-fiber plates, the DREAM nitrogen-TPU midsole, and the seamless upper construction.
Drying
Air dry at room temperature away from direct heat or sunlight. Remove the insole and loosen the laces to allow airflow through the seamless upper. Do not tumble dry or place near a radiator — heat above 40°C/104°F degrades the DREAM nitrogen-TPU midsole foam (reduces rebound), softens the carbon-fiber plate bonding, and damages the SURFACE CTRL™ rubber outsole compound. Do not leave in a hot car for the same reasons.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Loosely lace the shoes or stuff with paper to maintain the shape of the seamless upper and the skeletal support frame. Do not store compressed in a stuff sack for long periods — the DREAM nitrogen-TPU midsole can take a temporary compression set if left packed tight for weeks at a time between training cycles.
Outsole Lug Care
Clear mud and debris from the 3.5 mm lugs with a stiff brush or old toothbrush after each run — debris in the lugs reduces grip and accelerates wear in unintended patterns. Inspect the lugs periodically for wear patterns; if the heel lugs wear down faster than the toe lugs (typical for heel strikers), rotate the shoes between left and right to extend overall life.
VECTIV™ 3.0 Plate Care
The VECTIV™ 3.0 dual-stacked carbon-fiber propulsion plate is bonded into the midsole — it cannot delaminate with normal use but the bond is sensitive to extreme heat. Avoid prolonged heat exposure (radiators, hot cars, saunas) — heat above 60°C/140°F can weaken the plate/midsole bond. If the plate starts to feel loose or makes a clicking sound against the midsole, the shoe is at end-of-life (the midsole foam has worn through and the plate is no longer supported).
DREAM Midsole Foam Care
DREAM nitrogen-TPU foam is more durable than standard EVA midsole foam but it's still susceptible to compression set over many hundreds of miles. Track your mileage — ultra-distance racing shoes typically last 300–500 miles before the foam's rebound characteristics degrade enough to warrant replacement. If the shoes feel "flat" or you've noticed increased leg fatigue at distances that used to feel manageable, the foam is likely worn out.
Seamless Upper Care
The seamless breathable upper is water-repellent but not fully waterproof. Rinse with fresh water after running on salt or chlorinated surfaces — salt crystals and chlorine degrade the water-repellent treatment and can dry out the mesh fibers. If the upper feels like it's absorbing more water than it used to, re-treat with a spray-on water repellent such as Nikwax Fabric & Leather Proof or Granger's Performance Repel (test on a small area first to confirm no discoloration).
Internal Skeletal Frame Care
The lightweight internal skeletal support frame is what gives the shoe its precise foothold — but it's also the most likely component to show wear over time. Pay attention to the frame at the midfoot — if you start to feel lateral slippage or the shoe no longer locks your heel during technical terrain, the frame has likely deformed. The seamless upper is designed to be replaced/re-soled at most authorized TNF repair centers; the plate and frame are not user-serviceable.
Lacing & Tongue Wings
The integrated tongue wings eliminate pressure points over long miles — they should sit flat against the top of your foot with no bunching. Don't overtighten the laces at the top eyelets — this compresses the tongue wings against the ankle tendons and can cause discomfort or rubbing over ultra-distance efforts. If you feel the tongue wings digging in, loosen the top eyelet and re-lace using the runner's loop technique.
Race-Day Prep
For race day, lace the shoes a notch tighter than training runs to lock the foot in place during high-intensity efforts. Test the lacing system on a shake-out run the week before — never race in untested footwear. Apply body glide or trail-running-specific anti-chafe balm to the heel collar, the tongue wings, and the inside of the toebox before long ultras; the seamless upper eliminates most friction but the high-output heat can still cause hot spots on a 50+ mile run.
Replacement Indicators
Replace the shoes when any of these are true: (1) the midsole foam feels flat or "dead" compared to a new pair, (2) the SURFACE CTRL™ outsole lugs are worn smooth in the high-impact zones (heel, lateral forefoot), (3) the seamless upper has visible abrasion or the water-repellent treatment no longer beads water, (4) the VECTIV™ 3.0 plate starts to flex differently than when new, (5) you can feel rocks and roots through the midsole that you couldn't feel before.
Storage (Off-Season)
For off-season storage, clean the shoes thoroughly, remove the insoles, and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Stuff with paper or use a shoe tree to maintain the shape of the seamless upper and the skeletal support frame. Avoid plastic bags or airtight containers — the DREAM nitrogen-TPU midsole can off-gas slightly when new, and trapping that moisture in an airtight container can promote mildew on the insole and odor in the upper.
