Snomad 34 Backpack
Snomad 34 Backpack
Gear · Carry / Snowsports Backpack

Built with burly materials and an updated construction, the Snomad 34 Backpack has a refined feature set and enough room for hut trips and day missions. The versatile design features an internal hydration sleeve, multiple ski and board carry options and is now available in a range of sizes.

360-Degree Reflectivity
360-degree reflective detailing on the pack for visibility in low-light backcountry conditions — important for dawn starts, dusk finishes, and flat-light storm days
Back-Access Zipper
Back-access zipper provides easy entry to all your gear without digging through the top of the pack — a real backcountry convenience when the top is loaded with rope, ice tools, or a helmet
Burly Carbonate-Coated Nylon Face
420D recycled nylon face fabric with Carbonate PU coating on the front — burly, abrasion-resistant, and weatherproof for the abuse of daily backcountry use
Ambidextrous Ski + Splitboard Carry
Ambidextrous diagonal ski carry and an A-Frame carry for skis OR a splitboard — works for both right- and left-handed riders, and adapts to either skis or splitboard
Snowboard Carry (Stows Away)
Snowboard carry on the front of the pack — stows away when not in use, so it doesn’t snag on branches or get in the way of other gear when you’re not carrying a board
Removable Helmet Carry
Removable helmet-carry attachment on the front of the pack — clips on when you need to carry your helmet up the skin track or boot-pack, removes for a clean profile when not in use
Ice-Tool Carry
Ice-tool carry for technical alpine routes and steep descents — carry ice tools without sacrificing pack capacity
Reinforced Avalanche-Tool Pocket
Reinforced avalanche-tool pocket — dedicated, easy-access compartment for shovel, probe, and saw in case of an emergency
Internal Goggle Pocket + Lens Sleeve
Large, internal, secure-zip goggle pocket with a protective lens sleeve — keeps goggles safe and the lens scratch-free, even when the pack is full of gear
Internal Hydration Sleeve
Internal hydration sleeve with hose port — reservoir-based hydration for backcountry missions; compatible with most 2-3L hydration bladders
Internal Water Bottle Sleeve
Internal water bottle sleeve for a standard wide-mouth bottle (Nalgene-style) — quick-access hydration without a reservoir
Internal Secure-Zip Pocket + Key Hook
Internal, secure-zip pocket with a key hook — secure storage for keys, wallet, and small valuables
Sternum Strap with Whistle Buckle
Sternum strap with an integrated whistle buckle — adds chest-level stability under load and a safety whistle for backcountry emergencies
Updated Perimeter Frame
Updated perimeter frame creates a comfortable and functional carry — distributes weight close to the back for efficient load transfer on long tours
XXS/XS Size Added
New XXS/XS size allows for a wider fit range that includes smaller or younger riders — real inclusivity for youth and smaller adults
Recycled Materials
Front, sides, and boot all use 420D recycled nylon — high recycled content in the most abrasion-prone areas

Sustainability

Recycled Content
Front, sides, and boot 420D recycled nylon
PFC Status
Non-PFC DWR finish (sides + boot)
Cleaning
Wipe the 420D Carbonate PU-coated front and the 420D PU-coated sides/boot with a damp cloth and a small amount of mild soap. The PU coatings resist water, dirt, and most stains, so this is the only cleaning method most owners will ever need. Do not machine wash or tumble dry — the Carbonate PU coating + PU coating can delaminate under heat and agitation, the aluminum/perimeter frame can bend, and the back-access zipper can come out of alignment. For stubborn stains, use a soft brush (an old toothbrush works) with mild soap and water, then wipe clean.
Drying
Air dry at room temperature, away from direct heat or sunlight. Open the back-access zipper fully and the top-loading compartment so the interior, the hydration sleeve, and the goggle pocket dry completely — trapped moisture leads to mildew and odor in the internal pockets. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, or dryer — high heat delaminates the Carbonate PU coating and degrades the 420D recycled nylon face fibers.
DWR Re-Proofing
When water stops beading on the 420D recycled nylon sides + boot (the front is PU-coated and doesn’t need DWR), re-treat with a spray-on DWR such as Nikwax TX Direct or Granger’s Performance Repel. Apply to the clean, dry pack, paying extra attention to the shoulder straps, hip belt, and the side panels. A short low-heat tumble (yes, on this one — the pack can take a brief low-heat tumble to set DWR; check care label first) or a hair dryer on low/cool helps set the finish.
Hardware & Zippers
The pack has multiple zippers (back-access, internal secure-zip, goggle pocket, hydration port, etc.) plus the A-Frame ski carry, diagonal ski carry, snowboard carry, helmet carry, and ice-tool carry. Periodically check all buckles, clips, and compression straps — the most common failure point on any pack. Keep zippers clean (a soft brush works), lubricate sparingly with a silicone-based zipper lubricant (Nikwax, GE Silicone II) if they start sticking, and never force a stuck zipper — back it off and clear debris from the coil.
Carbonate PU Coating Care
The Carbonate PU coating on the front is a heavy-duty weatherproof finish that’s designed to take abuse. Avoid contact with insect repellent (DEET), sunscreen, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and PVC-coated bags stored against the Carbonate surface for long periods — solvents and chemicals can soften or discolor the coating. UV exposure over time breaks down PU — store the pack out of direct sunlight when not in use.
Ski + Snowboard Carry Maintenance
The A-Frame, diagonal ski carry, and snowboard carry are heavy-stress areas. After every backcountry tour, inspect the A-Frame webbing + buckles, the diagonal ski carry compression straps, and the snowboard carry for fraying or wear. A small reinforcement stitch with polyester thread at the first sign of fray prevents a much bigger repair. Don’t leave skis/board strapped to the pack for long-term storage (strain on the webbing and buckles).
Internal Goggle Pocket + Lens Sleeve
The large internal goggle pocket has a protective lens sleeve — keep the sleeve clean (a microfiber cloth works) so it doesn’t scratch the lens when you slide the goggles in. If the sleeve gets dirty, hand-wash with mild soap and water, then air dry. If the lens sleeve tears, a small piece of soft microfiber fabric or a clean cotton pillowcase can serve as a temporary replacement.
Helmet + Ice-Tool Carry
The removable helmet-carry attachment and the ice-tool carry are the most common wear points. Check the buckles + webbing on both periodically; if the helmet attachment buckle loses grip, it can be replaced with a standard 1″ side-release buckle from a hardware store. Ice-tool picks + axes can damage the pack fabric if not properly stowed — always stow with picks facing down and secured.
Avalanche-Tool Pocket
The reinforced avalanche-tool pocket is designed for fast access to shovel + probe in an emergency. Keep your shovel, probe, and saw in this pocket at all times during winter travel — don’t move them to other pockets. Practice deploying the tools with gloves on before your first tour so the muscle memory is there in an actual emergency. The pocket’s reinforced bottom resists shovel-pick abrasion.
Perimeter Frame
The updated perimeter frame is aluminum (lightweight + strong). Don’t sit on the pack with a loaded frame — can bend the frame permanently. If the frame does bend, take the pack to a TNF repair center or a qualified gear repair shop for frame replacement; don’t try to bend it back yourself (can crack the metal).
Storage
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Hang the pack by the ice-tool loop (if reinforced) or set it on a clean shelf. Avoid long-term compression in a stuff sack (the Snomad doesn’t have one, but if you do) — can flatten the perimeter frame and the internal pockets. Keep out of damp areas — trapped moisture in the internal goggle pocket, hydration sleeve, and water bottle sleeve leads to mildew and odor.
Field Trip Readiness
Before every backcountry tour, do a quick ABC check: Avalanche tools in the reinforced pocket (shovel + probe + saw, handle assembled), Back-access zipper free of ice and snow, Carry systems stowed (helmet carry tucked, snowboard carry collapsed) for snag-free movement through trees. Five-minute pre-trip check prevents mid-tour surprises.
