Technology

GORE-TEX®
W.L. Gore's durably waterproof membrane insert — keeps hands dry in snow, sleet, and wet conditions
HEATSEEKER™
Synthetic insulation with hollow-core fibers — high warmth-to-weight, durability, and warmth even when wet
Cleaning
Mitts are best cleaned with a sponge and mild soapy water — do not machine wash. Machine agitation can delaminate the GORE-TEX insert, displace the HEATSEEKER™ insulation, and pull the silicone gripper dots off the palm. Separate the Montana Liner Glove from the outer mitt before cleaning and wash the liner on its own gentle cycle or hand-wash. Rinse thoroughly to flush detergent from the brushed tricot lining and the recycled polyester shell.
Drying
Air dry completely at room temperature with the gauntlet open and the liner glove separated from the outer mitt. Hang over a drying rack or hang from the wrist adjustment strap. High heat (clothes dryers, hot car interiors, radiator) can damage the GORE-TEX insert, displace HEATSEEKER™ insulation, melt the silicone gripper dot print, and shrink the brushed tricot lining. Confirm both mitts and the liner are fully dry before storage.
GORE-TEX® Insert
The GORE-TEX waterproof insert is the heart of the mitt — never dry-clean or use solvents, which destroy the membrane. If water soaks through after years of heavy use, the insert is no longer trustworthy and the mitt should be replaced or sent to TNF for repair service under the limited lifetime guarantee.
HEATSEEKER™ Insulation
The HEATSEEKER™ synthetic insulation (180 g back-of-hand + 100 g palm) uses hollow-core fibers that retain warmth even when wet — but the mitts should still be fully dried between wears to prevent mildew inside the brushed tricot lining. Avoid compressing the mitts for long periods under heavy gear, which can flatten the insulation's loft.
Silicone Gripper Dots
The silicone gripper dot print on the palm gives a better grip on poles, leashes, and buckles — harsh solvents and abrasive cleaners will degrade the silicone dots. Wash with mild soap and a soft cloth only. If the dots wear away after heavy use, the mitt is still functional but the grip benefit is reduced.
Brushed Tricot Lining
The 100% recycled polyester brushed tricot lining is soft against the hand and pulls moisture away from skin. Fabric softener and bleach can mat the brushed fibers and reduce the moisture-wicking performance. If the lining pills after heavy wear, the pilling is cosmetic and doesn't affect waterproofing or warmth, but you can lightly trim pills with sharp scissors.
3-In-1 Liner Glove Care
The included Montana Liner Glove can be worn alone, paired with this outer mitt, or paired with many other TNF shell gloves (the liners are cross-compatible). Wash and dry the liner separately from the outer mitt — it's a standard fleece liner that tolerates gentle machine cycles, but separate care keeps the GORE-TEX insert in the outer mitt safe. Make sure the liner is fully dry before putting it back with the outer mitt for storage.
Tailless Wrist Adjustment
The tailless wrist adjustment can be operated one-handed or while the other mitt is on — it's a refined piece of hardware designed for active snow use. Don't over-tighten it (which compresses the cuff and restricts circulation) and don't force it past its stops. Periodically brush snow/ice from the adjustment mechanism so it operates freely.
Integrated Shockcord & Cord Lock at Gauntlet
The integrated shockcord with cord lock at the gauntlet hem customizes the fit over your jacket cuff. Don't cut the excess shockcord — tuck the tail through the cord lock and store inside the gauntlet. Snow and ice can pack the cord lock mechanism; brush it clean periodically and confirm it locks with a positive click before each outing. If the shockcord frays, replace it through TNF's repair service.
Embroidered Logos
The embroidered TNF logo on the back of the hand and the GORE-TEX logo on the back of the gauntlet are stitched, not printed — more durable than heat transfers but still susceptible to abrasion damage from rocks, ice axes, and pack straps. Inspect the embroidered logos periodically for lifting threads and clip loose threads with sharp scissors to prevent unraveling.
Nose Wipe
A soft nose wipe area is built into the thumb of the outer mitt or the liner for skin-friendly face wiping during cold-weather use. Don't use the palm of the mitt (which has the silicone gripper dot pattern) for face wiping — the dot texture is too abrasive against bare skin.
Storage
Store both the outer mitt and the liner glove in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the gauntlet open. Long-term compression (folded in a backpack, under heavy gear) permanently flattens HEATSEEKER™ insulation loft and mats the brushed tricot lining. Hang from the wrist adjustment strap or store flat. UV exposure breaks down the GORE-TEX insert and fades the Bold Blue shell color over time. Don't store them damp — mildew in the lining is the #1 mitt killer.
