Men’s McMurdo Parka
Men’s McMurdo Parka
Apparel · Outerwear / Expedition Down Parka

Built for cold days and colder destinations, the Men’s McMurdo Parka brings expedition-inspired warmth to the everyday. Named after McMurdo Station in Antarctica, this parka has the windproof and waterproof protection you need to tackle winter’s worst. As one of our longest men’s jackets, it provides extra coverage when you need it most.

DryVent™ 2L Waterproof Shell
Waterproof, breathable, seam-sealed DryVent™ 2L shell with non-PFC DWR finish — fully seam-sealed for full-storm protection, not just weather-resistant
600 Fill Recycled Waterfowl Down
600 fill 100% recycled waterfowl down delivers reliable cold-weather warmth — heavier fill weight than standard parkas, designed for deep winter cold
Removable Faux-Fur Ruff
Attached, adjustable, three-piece hood with an internal drawcord + cord locks + a removable faux-fur ruff — deflects wind and snow around the face; the fur removes for cleaning or style preference
Two-Way VISLON® Center Front Zip
Two-way, VISLON® center front zip covered by a stormflap with a hook-and-loop closure — vent from the bottom without unzipping the top, second layer of weather seal
Dual-Entry Patch Hand Pockets
Patch hand pockets with both a hook-and-loop flap-closure top entry and a secure-zip side entry — easy access to a phone or hand warmer
Two Concealed Alpine Chest Pockets
Two concealed, secure-zip alpine chest pockets — sit high and clear of a pack belt, sized for a phone, gloves, or a hat
Internal Secure-Zip Chest Pocket
Internal secure-zip chest pocket for phone, wallet, or documents — keeps valuables safe and accessible without removing gloves
Hook-and-Loop Cuff Tabs
Adjustable hook-and-loop cuff tabs seal out cold air and snow at the wrists — can be cinched over gloves or loosened for ventilation
Recycled Materials Throughout
Body fabric 100% recycled nylon, lining 100% recycled polyester, down 100% recycled waterfowl — full sustainability story

PFC Status

Washing
Close all zippers (CF, all pocket zips) and fasten the stormflap + cuff tabs before washing. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors in a front-loading washer (top-loader agitators damage the 600-fill recycled down baffles and the DryVent™ 2L seam-seal tape). Use a technical down-specific wash such as Nikwax Down Wash or Granger’s Down Wash — regular household detergent strips the natural oils from the 600-fill recycled waterfowl down, degrades the DryVent™ 2L membrane, and degrades the non-PFC DWR finish on the 70D × 160D 128 g/m² body and the 50D × 50D 78 g/m² lining. Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and dryer sheets. Do not dry clean (solvents destroy the DWR + the recycled down).
Faux-Fur Ruff Care
The 930 g/m² faux-fur ruff (62% polyester, 38% acrylic) is removable (typically via internal buttons or a separating zipper) — remove the fur before washing and wash it separately. Hand-wash the fur in cool water with mild soap; do not machine wash (the agitation mats the synthetic pile). Gently shake the fur to restore the pile after washing and comb it out with a wide-tooth comb or pet brush while still damp. Air dry flat. Never put the fur in a dryer — heat mats + permanently flattens the fibers.
Drying
Tumble dry on low with 3–4 clean tennis balls or dryer balls. The balls are critical for breaking up clumps in the 600-fill recycled down and restoring loft. Drying can take 3–4 full cycles for a heavily-soaked parka (this is a heavy parka — the 600-fill down + DryVent™ 2L shell + lining = significant water weight when wet). The parka is fully dry when no clumps remain and the fill is evenly distributed. High heat damages the recycled polyester face, the recycled down, the faux-fur fibers, the stormflap hook-and-loop, and the logo. Keep the dial low.
DWR Re-Proofing
When water stops beading on the 70D × 160D 128 g/m² DryVent™ 2L body or the 50D × 50D 78 g/m² lining, re-treat with a spray-on DWR such as Nikwax TX Direct or Granger’s Performance Repel. Apply to the clean, damp parka, paying extra attention to the shoulders, upper back, and the stormflap. A short low-heat tumble helps set the finish.
Down Care Specifics
600-fill recycled waterfowl down requires specific care to maintain loft and warmth. Never compress the parka in a stuff sack for long periods — extended compression permanently damages the 600-fill down loft and reduces thermal performance. If the down has clumped after years of use (especially at the shoulders, hood, and sleeve tops), a long low-heat tumble cycle with 3–4 tennis balls is the right reset. Avoid excessive heat — goose down can scorch above ~140°F and lose its loft permanently. If a feather pierces the face fabric, work it back into the baffle from the inside rather than pulling it out — pulling damages the baffle and creates a permanent leak path.
Two-Way Zip & Stormflap
The two-way VISLON® center front zip is durable but the stormflap takes the brunt of zipper abuse. If a hook-and-loop closure on the stormflap starts to lose grip, a quick reinforcement stitch with polyester thread restores the seal. The VISLON® coil itself rarely fails — if it sticks, lubricate sparingly with a silicone-based zipper lubricant (Nikwax, GE Silicone II, or beeswax) and never force. The two-way function lets you vent from the bottom while keeping the top sealed.
Hook-and-Loop Cuff Tabs
The cuff-tab hook-and-loop is the wear-and-tear zone of the parka — it takes constant glove abrasion. If a tab’s grip weakens over time, the hook-and-loop strip can be replaced with a standard 1″ sew-on strip from a craft or hardware store. Avoid yanking the parka off by the cuffs (stresses the cuff seam) — pull from the body or unzip and shrug out.
Storage (Off-Season)
Store clean, dry, and uncompressed in a cool, dark, dry place — ideally in a large cotton or mesh storage sack, or just hanging loosely in a closet. Never store a heavy down parka in a compression bag (the McMurdo doesn’t have one, but if you do) — extended compression permanently damages the 600-fill down. Remove the faux-fur ruff before long-term storage to prevent matting under the weight of the down fill. Keep out of direct sunlight (UV degrades the DryVent™ 2L membrane, the non-PFC DWR, fades the recycled nylon, and yellows the faux-fur fibers over time).
Hood Helmet/Brim Compatibility
The three-piece hood with internal drawcord + cord locks fits over a winter hat or a fur-trimmed beanie. The drawcord + cord locks dial in a tight seal around the face in high-wind conditions. Test the fit with your preferred winter hat to ensure the hood cinches snugly without obstructing vision.
