700-Fill Down Got An Upgrade
700-fill power insulation delivers serious warmth-to-weight performance in a vest silhouette that lets the arms run free — the down’s high fill power means the loft traps more dead air per ounce than a lower-fill down, so the vest stays warm without the bulk a lower-fill construction would require. The 700-fill spec sits in the premium range of down-fill powers — high enough for serious winter use, light enough that the vest doesn’t feel like a heavy coat when worn over a base layer and a fleece. The high fill power is the structural backbone of the vest’s lightweight performance.
Recycled Down & Reclaimed Merino Wool Fill Blend
The fill is a deliberate blend of recycled materials rather than virgin down — 64% Recycled Down/Reclaimed Down, 16% Recycled Waterfowl Feathers/Reclaimed Waterfowl Feathers, and 20% Recycled Wool/Reprocessed Wool. The 20% reclaimed Merino wool component is what makes the Winterloft fill unique among down products — the reclaimed Merino adds Merino’s natural temperature regulation and moisture management to the down’s loft, plus the resilience to handle moisture better than pure down (Merino can absorb up to 30% of its weight in water before feeling wet, while pure down loses its loft when wet). The blend is the response to down’s biggest weakness (moisture sensitivity) by combining it with the fiber that handles moisture best.
100% Recycled Ripstop Shell
The shell is 100% Recycled Nylon ripstop — the ripstop weave adds grid-pattern reinforcement threads that prevent small tears from spreading across the shell’s surface. The recycled nylon content keeps the durability performance with a lower-impact material choice than virgin nylon. The shell’s tight weave blocks wind and resists abrasion from pack-strap contact, branch brush on the trail, and the daily wear a winter vest sees across a full season. The 100% recycled nylon shell is the highest-recycled shell construction in the family — most other windproof shells in the family use a blend of recycled and virgin synthetics.
Non-PFC DWR Finish For Weather Protection
A non-PFC Durable Water Repellent finish on the shell sheds light precipitation — mist, freezing drizzle, wet snow, and puddles splash off instead of soaking through to the down fill. The non-PFC formulation delivers the same water-shedding performance as a traditional PFC-based DWR without the persistent fluorinated compounds that don’t break down in the environment. Light enough to wear in damp winter conditions without wetting through; repellent enough to keep the down fill’s loft intact across an exposed ridge in mixed precipitation.
Windproof Construction
Windproof construction blocks wind chill across the vest’s core — the recycled ripstop shell’s tight weave combined with the internal draft flap creates a windproof barrier that keeps the warm air the down fill traps from being stripped away by cold headwinds. The windproof construction is the difference between a vest that maintains its warmth on a windy ridge and one that lets the cold cut through to the base layer. The vest silhouette (no sleeves) means the windproof coverage is concentrated on the core where the body’s vital organs need the most protection — the arms stay free for full range of motion.
Merino-Blend Interior Draft Flap
An interior draft flap behind the front zipper uses a Merino-blend fabric (56% Merino Wool, 44% Recycled Polyester) that sits against the chin and neck when the zipper is fully closed — the Merino blend handles the moisture from breath and the warmth transfer at the front closure where cold air would otherwise leak through. The Merino-blend draft flap is the small detail that eliminates the cold-spot at the front zipper that a non-Merino draft flap would create, while also being more comfortable against the chin than a pure synthetic flap. (Note: this is the same 56% Merino / 44% Recycled Polyester blend as the collar/pocket lining throughout the vest.)
Secure Hand Pockets
Two secure hand pockets keep essentials (a phone, a card, a key, a pair of liner gloves) secure without the risk of bouncing out on a hike or a run — the pockets are lined with the same 56% Merino Wool / 44% Recycled Polyester blend as the draft flap for hand-warming comfort against the cold shell fabric. The pockets are positioned for easy access without interfering with a pack’s hip belt or a harness, and the zip closure keeps the contents secure across active movement.
Vest Silhouette — Core Warmth, Free Arms
The vest silhouette concentrates the 700-fill warmth on the core where the body’s vital organs need the most protection, while leaving the arms free for full range of motion — the right tool for high-output cold-weather activity where the core gets cold but the arms generate enough heat to stay warm. The vest layers cleanly over a base layer and under a shell, providing serious core warmth without the arm-bulk a full jacket would add. The silhouette is the right choice for stop-and-go winter activity (snowshoeing, winter hiking, ice fishing, après-ski) where the arms work hard but the torso needs to stay warm.

Washing
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Wash separately — the down + reclaimed Merino fill needs its own wash cycle to protect the fill’s loft and to prevent the ripstop shell’s reinforcement threads from catching on other garments’ closures. Cold water protects the down’s natural oils, the reclaimed Merino’s fiber integrity, and the non-PFC DWR finish’s water-shedding performance. Use a down-specific technical wash (a regular detergent can strip the down’s natural oils and reduce the fill’s loft); avoid fabric softeners, bleach, and any additive that would coat the down or Merino fibers.
Drying
Tumble dry low. The down + reclaimed Merino fill needs tumble drying to restore the fill’s loft after washing — air-drying a down garment without tumble heat leaves the fill clumped and the loft permanently reduced. Tumble dry on low heat with a few clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls to break up the down clusters as they dry; the balls’ agitation restores the loft that washing compresses. Low heat only; high heat can damage the down’s natural oils, the reclaimed Merino’s fiber integrity, and the shell’s non-PFC DWR finish. (Note: this differs from the Women’s Active Fleece sub-line in this family which explicitly requires dry flat — the Winterloft’s structured down fill needs tumble dry with agitation to restore loft, while the Active Fleece’s brushed single-layer knit is sensitive to tumble heat.)
Bleach & Iron & Dry Cleaning
Do not bleach. Do not iron. Do not dry clean. Bleach breaks down the recycled nylon shell’s fibers, the reclaimed Merino’s fibers, and the down’s natural oils. Iron heat can melt the ripstop shell’s reinforcement threads and scorch the Merino-blend collar lining. Dry cleaning solvents strip the natural lanolin from the reclaimed Merino and degrade the down’s loft — both of which are core to the vest’s warmth-to-weight performance. All three are explicitly prohibited on this construction.
Storage
Store in a dry, breathable space — an uncompressed cotton storage sack or hanging in a closet is ideal. Avoid long-term compression in a stuff sack (it can damage the down’s loft permanently). Merino’s natural odor resistance means the vest stays fresh across multiple wears between washes, which extends the fabric’s lifespan. The vest’s 100% Recycled Nylon shell is naturally resistant to mildew and moisture damage; storing the vest fully dry prevents any fill clumping from residual moisture.
