Second Cut™ Circular-Economy Sourcing
Designed with circular principles in mind, Second Cut™ Fleece is crafted with pre-consumer Smartwool® Merino wool scraps — manufacturing offcuts, yarn overruns, and production waste that would otherwise go to landfill are reclaimed and re-spun into the fleece fabric's recycled wool content. The Second Cut™ program redirects Smartwool's own production waste back into the supply chain, reducing virgin material demand and closing the loop on Merino wool sourcing without compromising the fabric's natural performance.
Triple-Blend Fleece Construction
Main Body: 50% Recycled Polyester, 25% Recycled Wool/Reprocessed Wool, 25% Merino Wool — a triple-blend construction where each fiber plays a distinct role: 25% Merino Wool delivers the natural moisture management, temperature regulation, and odor resistance that defines Merino performance; 25% Recycled Wool adds loft and warmth from reclaimed manufacturing scraps (Second Cut™ circular sourcing); 50% Recycled Polyester provides the structural durability, quick-dry performance, and abrasion resistance for daily-wear use. The triple blend balances Merino's natural performance with the lower-impact material sourcing.
Merino Wool Performance Properties
Fabric helps combine the moisture management, temperature regulation, and odor resistance of Merino wool — the 25% Merino content delivers the natural performance that pure synthetic fleece can't match. The Merino manages the sweat during active use, regulates body temperature across the wide range of conditions a fleece mid-layer sees, and resists odor across multi-day wear. The Merino's natural performance is the foundation of the Second Cut™ fabric's value beyond its sustainability positioning.
CLO Fabric Warmth Rating ≥ 1.15
CLO Fabric Warmth Rating is greater than or equal to 1.15 — a measurable thermal-insulation value that quantifies the fleece's warmth retention. CLO (Clothing Insulation) is the standardized unit for measuring fabric warmth; a rating of ≥ 1.15 places this fleece in the mid-range insulation category, warmer than a lightweight base layer but lighter than a heavyweight parka. The CLO rating delivers a verifiable warmth measure rather than a subjective "warm" claim, and it places the jacket in the right mid-layer role for shoulder-season and mild-winter wear.
Three Secure Pockets
Two secure pockets at side seams, one secure chest pocket — the side-seam hand pockets are lined with 100% Recycled Polyester for hand-warming comfort and sized for a phone, a key, or a pair of liner gloves. The chest pocket is sized for a wallet, a card, or a small notebook and positioned for easy access without interfering with a pack's hip belt. All three pockets have secure closures to keep essentials safe during active use.
Locker Loop At Interior Back Neck
Locker loop at interior back neck for easy hanging — a small fabric loop at the interior back neck lets you hang the jacket on a hook or a locker peg without distorting the shoulders the way a thin wire hanger would. Recycled Nylon Pocket & Trim
Pocket/Trim: 100% Recycled Nylon — the pocket bags and the binding/trim use 100% recycled nylon for a lower-impact material choice on the component pieces that don't need the Merino-wool-blend face fabric. The recycled nylon delivers the durability and structural integrity the pocket bags need without the reliance on virgin nylon, and the binding uses recycled nylon for the same reason. Pocket Lining: 100% Recycled Polyester adds the hand-warming softness against the hand without the abrasion a coarser pocket bag would create.
Regular Fit With Room To Move
Our regular fit is intended to help give you room to move without additional bulk — roomier than a slim-fit fleece piece but not boxy. The cut leaves space for a base layer underneath without the binding a tight athletic fit would create at the chest and shoulder, and layers cleanly under a shell for the colder days. The regular fit transitions across casual and active use without the technical-performance look a hiking-specific fleece would carry.

Washing
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle. Wash with like colors — the triple-blend construction (Merino + Recycled Wool + Recycled Polyester) benefits from isolated washing to protect the fabric's moisture-management properties and the recycled content's structural integrity. Cold water protects the Merino fibers from shrinking and the recycled wool loft from felting. Use a mild, technical wash; avoid fabric softeners (they coat the Merino fibers and reduce natural moisture management, and they can degrade the recycled polyester's quick-dry performance and the recycled wool's loft).
Drying
Dry flat. The Second Cut™ fleece construction and the recycled wool content benefit from flat drying rather than tumble drying — flat drying preserves the fleece's loft and the recycled wool's structural integrity. Tumble heat can flatten the fleece loft, shrink the Merino fibers, and felt the recycled wool content, which would degrade the CLO ≥ 1.15 warmth rating and the jacket's longevity positioning. Lay flat on a clean towel away from direct heat; reshape the fleece gently after washing to maintain the silhouette. (Note: this is different from the Smartloft™ and Active Fleece products in this family that explicitly allow tumble dry low — the Second Cut™ fleece's recycled wool content benefits from the gentler flat-dry care.)
Bleach & Iron
Do not bleach. Cool iron as needed — do not iron decoration. Bleach breaks down Merino wool fibers and degrades the recycled wool and recycled polyester components. Iron only on low heat and only on the non-decorated fabric areas; high heat can scorch the fleece face fabric and damage the recycled nylon pocket/trim.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino and degrade the recycled wool content's loft retention — both of which are core to the fleece's warmth and moisture-management performance.
Storage
Store folded in a dry, breathable space, or hang on a wide wooden or padded hanger using the interior back-neck locker loop. Merino's natural odor resistance means the jacket covers multiple wear days between washes, which extends the fabric's lifespan and supports the longevity design philosophy. The locker loop honors the circular-design intention — hanging on the locker loop keeps the shoulder structure intact and prevents the creasing that flat storage can develop at the knuckle break points.

Returns & Exchanges:
