The Second Cut™ Hike Sock is our most iconic sock—reimagined to reduce waste and reinforce durability. It has the iconic fit and feel of our Classic Edition Hike Sock and features our circular Second Cut™ yarn, which is a mix of recycled fibers, canister waste, and virgin Merino wool. These socks not only feel good, but they also do good with every step on the trail.
Second Cut™ Circular Yarn
Second Cut™ yarn is a 50/50 mix of recycled fibers and virgin Merino wool — a closed-loop construction that uses fibers recovered through the Smartwool sock take-back program and canister waste alongside fresh Merino. The result is a sock with the iconic feel of the Classic Edition Hike Sock and a measurably lower footprint on the virgin fiber supply chain.
Extra Cushion, Full Foot
Heavy thickness with full sock cushioning — cushion on the entire foot, not just the underfoot. The Extra Cushion construction absorbs impact across thousands of trail miles and keeps the foot warm in cold-weather boots where a lighter sock packs out before lunch.
Made In The USA Of Imported Yarn
Knit in the USA from imported yarn. The domestic knit operation keeps the manufacturing loop close to the consumer and supports a domestic supply chain — the take-back program that feeds the Second Cut™ recycled content depends on a domestic mill that can close the loop on returned socks.
Iconic Classic Edition Fit & Feel
The Second Cut™ Hike Sock keeps the iconic fit and feel of the Classic Edition — the original Smartwool hike sock introduced in 1994. The recycled yarn doesn’t change the wear experience: same elasticized arch brace for a dialed-in fit, same flat knit toe seam for comfort on long descents, same crew-height coverage.
Crew Height Coverage
Crew sock height rises above the ankle for extra coverage on the trails. The cuff seals out trail debris in hiking boots and adds a small layer of warmth around the lower calf on cold-morning starts.
Recycled Nylon & Elastane Backbone
23% Nylon and 1% Elastane in the blend add the structural durability and stretch recovery that a hike sock demands. The nylon backbone survives hundreds of trail miles and the daily wash-and-dry cycle of multi-day trips; the elastane keeps the knit returning to shape rather than bagging out across the arch.
Reduces Waste, Reinforces Durability
The Second Cut™ construction reclaims fibers that would otherwise be discarded. The recycled blend includes recovered take-back socks and canister waste spun back into new yarn, closing the loop on Smartwool’s own supply chain. The result is a sock that reduces virgin fiber demand while still delivering the durability the Classic Edition is known for.

Washing
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in warm or cool water. Turn socks inside out before washing to protect the outer knit and help release body soil from the cushion. Avoid fabric softener, which coats Merino fibers and reduces moisture-wicking performance.
Drying
Tumble dry low. Heat helps the Merino fibers re-loft and restores cushion volume. High heat can shrink the sock and damage the elastane recovery — keep the setting low and remove promptly.
Bleach & Iron
Do not bleach. Do not iron. Bleach breaks down Merino wool fibers and destroys the elastane; iron heat can scorch the knit and flatten the cushion loft.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino wool and degrade the recycled nylon and elastane construction — both of which are core to the sock’s performance.
Storage
Store paired and unfolded in a dry space. Merino’s natural odor resistance means you can wear the sock multiple days between washes on multi-day trips — the performance feature that’s made the Classic Edition a backpacking standard since 1994.

Bicycles:
Complete bikes typically ship within 2–3 weeks due to build, tuning, and inspection times. You will receive tracking information as soon as your order is ready to ship.
Riding Gear & Apparel:
Riding gear and apparel orders (helmets, jerseys, gloves, etc.) ship within 3-10 business days.
Returns & Exchanges:
If you received the wrong size or wish to exchange an item, it must be returned in original condition—unused, uninstalled, and with all packaging intact.
