Nylon Tarp Poncho
Nylon Tarp Poncho
2-in-1 Rain Poncho & Tarp Shelter · 15.3 oz · 100 × 54 in

The Nylon Tarp Poncho is a rain poncho that doubles as a tarp shelter. Worn over a backpack in the rain or pitched as a two-person shelter at camp, it's a single piece that handles both jobs.

70D Coated Waterproof Nylon
Made of lightweight and waterproof 70D coated Nylon fabric — the 70D denier is the sweet spot between weight and durability for recreational hiking, fully taped seams and PU coating keep water out in a good torrential downpour. Heavier than the Ultra-Sil Nano version, but significantly more durable.
2-in-1: Poncho + Tarp Shelter
Easily converts from rainwear to a two-person shelter — wear it as a poncho during the hike, then pitch it as a tarp shelter at camp with trekking poles or natural anchors. Single piece replaces both a rain jacket and a tarp, saves weight and pack space.
Accommodates a Large Backpack
Accommodates a large backpack — the poncho is sized to fit over a fully-loaded pack (40-65L), so you don't have to choose between staying dry and keeping your pack covered. Worn over a pack, it protects both you and your gear in the rain.
Seam-Taped Three-Panel Hood + Wide Brim
Double stitched, tape sealed, three-panel hood with a wide brim — the three-panel construction follows the natural shape of the head for full peripheral vision, and the wide brim keeps rain off your face and out of your eyes. Hood fits over a hat for cold-weather use.
Highly Breathable (for a Poncho)
Not "breathable" by technical definition, but a poncho has far more ventilation than a rain jacket — the open bottom allows full air exchange under the poncho, so condensation is rarely an issue. Worn in motion, the open bottom acts as a chimney for hot air to escape.
Oval Stuff Sack Included
Comes neatly packaged in an oval stuff sack for the best fit inside your pack — the oval shape distributes the poncho evenly, no pointy corners to take up dead space, and the stuff sack doubles as a storage bag when the poncho is in use.
Recycled Nylon (RCS-Certified)
Made of 70D RCS-Certified recycled Nylon — same durability and waterproofing as virgin nylon, but with recycled content for lower environmental impact. The coatings and tape are still PU-based for waterproofing.

Thru-Hiker Alternative
Ultra-Sil Nano Tarp Poncho (sister product, lighter and more compact for thru-hiking)
Re-Proof DWR Every 1-2 Years
Re-proof the PU coating every 1-2 years with a spray-on treatment (like Nikwax TX Direct Spray-On or Granger's Performance Repel) — restores water beading on the fabric surface and extends the waterproof lifespan. The PU coating does wear off with use, especially on the high-flex areas (hood seams, shoulder area).
Hand Wash with Mild Soap
Hand wash the poncho with warm water and mild soap (like Nikwax Tech Wash) — machine washing can damage the taped seams, the PU coating, and stretch the shape. Rinse thoroughly, then air dry fully before packing away.
Inspect Seams & Taping
Before each trip, run your fingers along all seams checking for any tape separation or peeling — a failing seam in a downpour means a wet backpack. Spot-repair with Gear Aid SilNet seam sealer and let cure 24 hours before next use.
Pack Using the Oval Stuff Sack
Pack using the included oval stuff sack for best pack fit — the oval shape distributes the poncho evenly, no pointy corners. The oval also lets you stuff the poncho loosely (avoiding creases that can stress the taped seams) instead of trying to fold it perfectly.
Avoid Sharp Objects & Abrasive Surfaces
The 70D ripstop is tough but not puncture-proof — avoid dragging the poncho across sharp rocks, jagged branches, or rough concrete. Sharp objects (pocket knives, tent stakes, fishing hooks) can puncture the fabric and compromise the waterproof coating.
Store Dry, Out of Direct Sun
Store the poncho in the included stuff sack, completely dry, out of direct sunlight — UV can degrade the PU coating over time, and trapped moisture leads to mildew on the inside of the fabric. A drawer or gear closet is ideal.
