Minimalist Tarp
Minimalist Tarp
Ultralight Tarp Shelter · 14.2 oz Packed · 133 × 79 in

The Minimalist Tarp is an ultralight shelter for backpacking. It pitches with trekking poles, trees, or paddles, and works as a versatile base for minimalist backcountry setups.

Twin Storm Flaps (Open or Closed)
Twin storm flaps block wind and rain or open to increase shade coverage in changing conditions — close them up for storm protection, open them out for ventilation and sky view. Versatility for any weather or mood.
Ultra-Sil LS 15D/30D Ripstop Fabric
Ultra-Sil LS 15D nylon/30D polyester ripstop reduces water absorption, dries faster, and ensures a tighter, low-stretch pitch — the LS (low-stretch) treatment is the key to a sag-free tarp in rain and humidity. Standard Ultra-Sil would sag as it absorbed water; Ultra-Sil LS doesn't.
Catenary Cut for High-Wind Stability
Catenary cut minimises fabric flutter and maintains a taut pitch when wind speeds increase — the curved edge follows a natural catenary curve, which is the same shape a chain forms when hanging between two points. The result: minimal flutter, no flapping, less noise in wind.
Circular Bar Tacks + Adjustable Guy Lines
Circular bar tacks hold trekking pole tips while adjustable guy lines tension quickly at reinforced tie-out points — pitch in 2-3 minutes, fine-tune tension without retying knots. The circular bar tacks are reinforced for repeated use with sharp pole tips.
Reinforced Tie-Out Points + Line Tensioners
Reinforced tie-out points with adjustable line tensioners enable precise pitch control and optimal fabric tension — every tie-out has a tensioner so you can dial in the pitch without untying and retying knots.
Dual-Use Storage Sack
Reinforced stuff sack attaches to tarp and functions as a pole pocket for branches or paddles when poles aren't available — clever integration: the storage sack isn't dead weight in the system, it can be used as a pole socket in the field for improvised pitches.
Central Hang Loop for Alternative Pitches
Central hang loop enables suspension from branches for alternative pitch configurations — pitch as an A-frame, lean-to, or hang the tarp horizontally from a single high branch. Multiple pitch modes for different terrain.
Tangle-Free Packdown
Attached toggles let you quickly remove guy lines for faster, cleaner tarp storage — no tangled mess of line when you stuff the tarp away, no separate line management. Tarp and lines pack together cleanly every time.
Compatible with Escapist Bug Shelter
Optional Escapist Mesh Bug Shelter easily attaches and suspends from the tarp for full coverage in buggy environments — turns the open tarp into a fully enclosed bug-proof shelter for mosquito country. The Escapist is a separate add-on purchase.
Lower-Impact Materials
Ultra-Sil LS fabric is recycled, bluesign APPROVED, and non-PFAS — same environmental standards as the rest of the Sea to Summit outdoor line. No flame retardants used. Built to modern environmental standards.

Use

Best Use
Ultralight backpacking, thru-hiking, minimalist shelter setups
Pitch Modes
A-frame (trekking poles) · Lean-to (trees or single pole) · Hang (central loop from branch) · Porch mode (open front)
Pegs/Stakes Included
No — tarps are often attached to trees or other natural anchors. Ground Control or Ground Control Light pegs work well with the Minimalist.
Add-On Compatibility
Escapist Mesh Bug Shelter (sold separately) — fits underneath for full bug coverage
Dry Out Before Packing
Always dry the tarp thoroughly before packing it away — shake off loose dirt and moisture, then either air-dry in the sun for 30+ minutes or wipe down with a dry cloth. The Ultra-Sil LS fabric resists water absorption, but trapped moisture leads to mildew and degraded seam tape over time.
Hand Wash the Tarp Body
Hand wash the tarp with warm water, mild soap (non-detergent), and a soft sponge — never machine wash, as the agitation can damage the catenary cut, the storm flaps, and the reinforced tie-out points. For stubborn dirt, use a soft-bristled brush.
Re-Seam with Seam Sealer as Needed
Over years of use, the factory seam tape can wear or peel — apply a tent-specific seam sealer (like Gear Aid SilNet or similar) to any leaking seams and let cure 24 hours before next use. The reinforced tie-out points are the most common stress points and the first to potentially need re-sealing.
Inspect Tie-Outs & Guy Lines
Before each trip, check all reinforced tie-out points for abrasion or fabric wear, and inspect the attached guy lines for fraying or weak retention — a tie-out failure in wind is a tarp collapse. Replace any fraying line and re-tape any worn tie-out.
Store Uncompressed Long-Term
For long-term storage between trips, store the tarp loosely folded or in the included stuff sack (NOT a separate compression bag) — leaving the fabric compressed for months can weaken fibers and degrade the LS treatment.
Re-Proof DWR Every 1-2 Years
Re-proof the DWR coating every 1-2 years with a spray-on or wash-in treatment (like Nikwax TX Direct or Granger's Performance Repel) — restores water beading on the fabric surface and extends the water-resistant lifespan of the Ultra-Sil LS.
