Frontier Ultralight Collapsible Dinnerware Set
Frontier Ultralight Collapsible Dinnerware Set
3-Piece Ultralight Set (Medium Bowl + Large Bowl + Medium Cup) · 7.0 oz Total · Glass-Reinforced Nylon · Nests in Frontier 2L Pouring Pot

Designed to nest together, the Large Bowl, Medium Bowl and Cup collapse down to take up hardly any room in your backpack — and the new lightweight construction means that they won't add much weight to your pack, either. Despite having shed grams, functionality has been improved. Each bowl now has a rim so you can hold it securely and a curve between the base and sidewalls that matches Sea to Summit spoons. The Cup has a central ring in addition to the upper rim to make it easier to grip. And — coming from the pioneer in collapsible camp dinnerware, you know you can rely on premium, EU food grade materials.

Glass-Reinforced Nylon
30% glass-reinforced nylon 66 base/rim — lightweight + structural rigidity.
Spoon-Matched Curve
The base-to-wall curve matches Sea to Summit spoons — easy cleanup.
Nests in Frontier Pot
All 3 pieces nest inside the Frontier 2L Pouring Pot for compact cookware set.
Set Contents (3 Pieces)
Glass-Reinforced Nylon 66 Base/Rim (LIGHTWEIGHT)
The base + rim of each piece uses 30% glass-reinforced nylon 66: What "glass-reinforced nylon 66" is: - Nylon 66 = high-strength industrial nylon - + 30% glass = structural rigidity - Lighter than aluminum + similar stiffness - Heat-resistant up to high temperatures - Same material family used in automotive + aerospace Why 30% glass: - More glass = stiffer but more brittle - 30% is the practical balance for tableware - Enough rigidity to hold shape when held - Still flexible enough to absorb drops Why nylon (instead of stainless steel like Detour): - Lighter (key for UL category) - Strong enough for dining use - Doesn't lose its structural integrity over years - Used in aerospace + outdoor gear Trade-off with Detour line: - Detour: stainless steel body → premium feel, more weight, more rigidity - Frontier: glass-reinforced nylon body → lightweight, less premium-feel, still durable
EU Food-Grade Silicone Sidewalls (37% of Material)
The foldable sidewalls use EU food-grade silicone: Per STS: "Made from EU food-grade silicone and glass-reinforced nylon 66" Why EU food-grade: - Highest regulatory standard for food contact - Tested for migration (chemicals into food) - Safe for hot liquids (coffee, soup) - No PFAS, BPA, or harmful plasticizers Why 37% silicone content: - More silicone than the Detour line (23%) - More flexible = lighter overall - Soft-touch feel - The walls are + the base/rim are - vs Detour's opposite ratio
5,000-Cycle Durability Test (Per FAQ)
Per STS FAQ: "Are the collapsible bowls fragile? No! The base and rim are made of strong glass-reinforced nylon; the bowls are tested on a rig that extends and collapses each item 5,000 times." What 5,000 cycles means: - Each piece extends + collapses 5,000 times in testing - = simulating years of typical use - Standard durability testing across STS products - Confirms the design holds up to repeated daily use How 5,000 cycles translate to real use: - Daily use (one round-trip per trip): 1 cycle/day - 5,000 cycles = ~13.7 years of daily use - Weekly use: ~96 years Practical: - Glass-reinforced nylon + silicone combo is highly durable - Won't fail mid-trip - Decades of use even with heavy backpacking
Nests Inside Frontier 2L Pouring Pot (UNIQUE INTEGRATION)
The Frontier dinnerware set is specifically designed to nest inside the Frontier 2L Pouring Pot (sister product in the same line): What "nests" means: - All 3 collapsed pieces fit inside the 2L Pouring Pot's interior - They use space that's wasted anyway (most pots don't fully fill with gear) - Single packed bundle for the full cooking + dining system Practical: - Frontier 2L Pouring Pot = 1 piece (cooking vessel) - Frontier Collapsible Dinnerware Set = 3 pieces (eat with) - All 4 collapse + nest into a single stack - Both products designed for the same audience (ultralight backpackers) System weight total (estimated): - Frontier 2L Pouring Pot: ~150 g (per STS specs) - Dinnerware set: 197 g - Combined: ~347 g = ~12 oz - = Full ultralight kitchen
Rim Improvements + Heat Shielding
Per STS: "Each bowl now has a rim so you can hold it securely and a curve between the base and sidewalls that matches Sea to Summit spoons. The Cup has a central ring in addition to the upper rim to make it easier to grip." Rim improvements: - Sturdy rim = more comfortable holding - Doesn't fold under finger pressure - Distribution of weight when holding - Rim is glass-reinforced nylon (rigid) Cup Central Ring (NEW): - Mid-cup ring (not just top) - Finger grip for stability - Shield fingertips from hot cup contents - Heat protection is a practical detail for hot coffee/tea Heat shielding chain: - Cup: holds coffee/tea - Central ring: blocks heat transfer to fingers - Outer surface: stays cool enough to hold - = No burned fingers even with boiling water inside
Spoon-Matched Curve (STS Standard)
Same as the Detour line + Escapist Evo Tarp + Camp Pots: Per STS: "The curve between the sidewalls and base perfectly matches Sea to Summit spoons — so you'll never miss a morsel" Why a matched curve: - STS spoons are designed to fit this exact radius - Spoon tip matches the curve - Easy to scrape the last morsel - Less food waste - Easier cleanup STS design system: - Detour Collapsible Bowl - Detour Plate - Detour Stainless Steel Cookware (pot, kettle, pouring pot) - Frontier Collapsible Dinnerware (this product) - All use the same curve radius Practical: - Buy any STS spoon — fits all STS cookware + dinnerware - Consistent feel across the product line - Premium detail most users don't notice until they upgrade
Award-Worthy + Best for Solo + 1
The Frontier UL Collapsible Dinnerware Set is positioned as the solo+1 diner pack-friendly option: Why "solo + 1": - 1 Medium Bowl for one person - 1 Large Bowl for sharing - 1 Cup for one drink - Can serve one person with full meal (use both bowls) - Can share between two (one each bowl + share cup) Designed for: - Solo backpackers (one person, full meal) - 2-person backpacking (share bowls + cup) - Bikepacking (very small pack footprint) - Lightweight camping - Packrafting Not designed for: - Family camping (need more pieces) - Heavy car camping (weight savings unnecessary) - Users who want real plates (use the Frontier Plate separately)

NO (don't use in microwave per FAQ) NOT for: - Family camping (2 kids + 2 adults = need more pieces) - Heavy car camping (weight doesn't matter, get the Detour 6-piece) - Microwave cooking (microwaves damage silicone + nylon — FAQ confirms)

Microwave Warning (Per FAQ)
Per STS FAQ: "Are Frontier bowls / cups microwave safe? Frontier tableware should not be used in a microwave — please see the general FAQ section of our website." Why not microwave: - Silicone + nylon 66 are not microwave-safe long term - Microwave heating + glass-reinforced nylon = wear/degradation over time - Silicone can leach into food at extreme microwave temps - The 5,000-cycle durability test doesn't include microwave cycles Practical: - Never microwave - Heat food in the Frontiers 2L Pouring Pot instead - Use a separate ceramic/microwave-safe container for microwave use - Reheat food in the Pouring Pot on a stove (induction + gas + electric compatible per earlier build) Reheating tips: - Use the Frontier 2L Pouring Pot for stovetop reheat - Pour into the bowl for serving - Cold-soak (just add boiling water to the bowl for freeze-dried meals)
Dishwasher Use (Per FAQ)
Per STS FAQ: "Is Frontier tableware dishwasher safe? Yes — Frontier tableware can be washed in a dishwasher" Top-rack recommendation: - Glass-reinforced nylon can handle dishwasher cycles - Silicone is dishwasher-safe - Top rack minimizes heat exposure - Standard detergent works Washing tips: - Pre-rinse to remove food residue - Mild detergent (no bleach) - Top rack only (per general recommendation) - Air dry thoroughly before storing (prevents trapped moisture) - Allow silicone to fully dry (~24 hours for full drying) Hand-wash alternative: - Mild soap + water - Soft cloth or sponge - Quick clean between trips - Faster than running a full dishwasher cycle
Nylon + Silicone Longevity Care
The two materials have different care needs: Glass-filled nylon 66: - Heat resistant up to high temperatures - UV degrades over time (long-term exposure) - Don't use harsh solvents - Standard wash temperatures OK EU food-grade silicone: - Heat resistant up to 230°C+ - Doesn't dry out (unlike cheaper silicone) - Lasts 20+ years with care - Avoid sharp cuts (knives inside the bag) Lifespan with care: - 10+ years easily - The 5,000-cycle test = 13+ years of daily use - Storage doesn't damage the materials - Use, not storage, determines lifespan
Avoid These Failure Modes
Don't: - Microwave the dishware (per FAQ) - Use harsh chemicals or bleach (degrades nylon + silicone) - Cut directly on the rim (glass-filled nylon is hard but edges can chip) - Over-tighten anything inside (forces warp) - Store compressed for months (silicone + nylon don't deform but better to allow recovery) - Expose to direct sunlight for extended periods (UV) Most common wear points: - Rim scuffs (cosmetic only) - Hinge line (designed to flex thousands of times) - Staining from acidic foods (tomato, wine) — wash quickly
Sustainability & End-of-Life
No specific sustainability claims: - Not labeled as recycled material - Not Bluesign APPROVED (unlike the Detour line) - Standard food-grade materials Longevity factors: - 5,000-cycle test = verified durability - Glass-filled nylon and food-grade silicone last decades - Replace only when damaged At end-of-life: - Specialty textile recyclers - Most end in landfill - Nylon + silicone are slow to break down Compare to Detour line: - Detour: mostly stainless → more recyclable - Frontier: nylon + silicone → less recyclable - The Detour line is the more sustainable choice
Activity-Specific Tips
- Backpacking: Primary use. 197 g is worth it. Pair with Frontier 2L Pouring Pot for nesting. - Bikepacking: Fits in handlebar roll + seat bag. 7 oz is minimal pack overhead. - Packrafting: Nest inside the Frontier 2L Pouring Pot — single packed bundle. - Solo+1 couple: One Medium Bowl + one Cup for solos. Add the Large Bowl for a second diner. - Ultralight cotton use: Cold-soak overnight (just add water to bowls for freeze-dried). - Long trip: 5,000-cycle durability = months of daily use, multiple trips. - Be very light backpacking: This is the lowest-weight bowl option STS offers. - NOT for: Microwave heating (per FAQ). Heavy car camping (overkill weight). Families (not enough pieces for 3+ diners).
