Evac Heavy Duty Compression Dry Bag
Evac Heavy Duty Compression Dry Bag
4-Size Compression Dry Bag · 420D TPU-Laminated Ripstop · eVac Air-Permeable Base · 10,000mm Hydrostatic Head

Perfect dry compression storage for everything from kayaks, motorbikes, roof racks and beyond. Made from a super-strong, abrasion and puncture-resistant 420D waterproof main body fabric and a 500D Cordura EVAC waterproof/air-permeable base. Squeeze air out while keeping the contents dry, without the need for a purge valve. The Evac Compression Dry Bag HD simple to use, even in challenging conditions. Four compression straps make it easy to evenly compress soft items, lash points provide reliable attachment points, and the hypalon non-wicking roll-top closure also keeps the water out. Simple, extremely rugged and reliable — the epitome of durability, versatility, and dry compression.

10,000mm Hydrostatic
Heavy-duty waterproofing — withstands rain, spray, river crossings.
eVac Air-Permeable Base
500D CORDURA® base lets air OUT, keeps water IN — squeeze to compress.
Hypalon Non-Wicking
Synthetic rubber roll-top closure — doesn't wick water into the bag.
4 Compression Straps
2 ladderlock + 2 side-release buckles — even compression for soft items.
Field Repair Buckle
Patented 15mm buckle — user-replaceable in the field, no tools needed.
Lash Points
Multiple attachment loops for kayaks, motorbikes, roof racks, snowmobiles.
Size Comparison (4 Sizes)
10,000mm Hydrostatic + 420D Ripstop Body (HD WATERPROOFING)
The HD version uses upgraded fabric construction vs standard STS dry bags: Body Material: - 420D (denier) TPU-laminated ripstop nylon - TPU laminate = waterproof inner coating (bonded to the nylon) - Ripstop = small reinforcement squares (prevents tear propagation) - Higher denier = thicker, more durable fabric - vs standard dry bag fabrics (typically 70D-210D) 10,000mm Hydrostatic Head: - Same excellent rating as the Evac Bikepack Set - Suitable for all wet conditions except submersion - Per FAQ: "the body of the dry bag is waterproof (10,000 mm). However, avoid submersion since water can seep through the roll-top closure of any dry bag" HD (Heavy Duty) Designation: - Thicker fabric for wear-and-tear resistance - Suitable for vehicle-mounted applications (motorbike, kayak, roof rack) - Heavier than standard dry bags (8-13 oz for the bags themselves) - Worth the weight for rugged use Why 420D specifically: - Thick enough for motorcycle abrasion - Puncture-resistant against branches, rocks - Holds shape better than lighter fabrics - Standard for rugged outdoor use
eVac Base — Air OUT, Water IN
The HD version uses STS's eVac Fabric at the base — a more aggressive version than the Bikepack Dry Bag Set's Evac laminate: Per STS: "Squeeze air out while keeping the contents dry, without the need for a purge valve." What eVac does: - Microporous membrane - Air molecules pass through (larger) - Water molecules don't (smaller, surface tension) - Like Gore-Tex but for dry bag bases Why the base specifically: - Body is waterproof (no air in/out needed via body) - Bottom is where air pools when filling - Squeeze the bag → air out through the base - The base breathes but doesn't leak water Use technique: 1. Load gear into the bag 2. Roll the top 3-4 times and buckle 3. Squeeze the bag (or sit on it) to expel air 4. The bag becomes compact + stable 5. Re-squeeze periodically during compression with straps Versus purge valves: - Purge valves are mechanical (push button) - Can break, leak, or get stuck - Evac laminate = no moving parts = more reliable - "Without the need for a purge valve" per STS
Hypalon Non-Wicking Roll-Top Closure
The HD's closure uses Hypalon — STS's premium closure material: What "non-wicking" means: - Wicking = capillary action pulling water along fibers - Most nylon closures can wick water a few cm into the bag - Hypalon's smooth surface = no wicking - Water sits on the outside, doesn't migrate inward Why this matters for compression: - Compression means tight closure = minimal dry area above contents - If water wicks past the closure = contents get wet - Non-wicking closure = critical for compression bag use Hypalon material properties: - Synthetic rubber developed by DuPont - Highly UV-resistant - Highly chemically resistant - Flexible at low temperatures (won't stiffen) - Won't degrade from sea water or road spray
4 Compression Straps (UNIQUE TO COMPRESSION BAGS)
The HD has 4 straps for even compression: Per STS: "Eliminate bulging and achieve even compression using the four straps with two ladderlock and two easy-access side-release buckles." Strap configuration: - 2 ladderlock buckles: Permanently tighten (wrap around with webbing fed through ladderlock) - 2 side-release buckles: Quick-release (snap on/off) Compression workflow: 1. Pack soft items (sleeping bag, clothing) loosely 2. Roll top closed 3. Pull ladderlock straps tight (these stay tight) 4. Tension with the side-release straps for final compression 5. The bag stays compressed in transport Why 4 straps vs 2: - More straps = more even compression - Less bulging in the middle - Better shape retention - More attachment options (can lash to vehicle) Side-release buckles allow quick access without unthreading ladderlock each time. Common bag-use balance.
Patented Field Repair Buckle
The HD includes the patented STS Field Repair Buckle (15mm): What "field repair" means: - Standard buckles are sewn permanently + can't be replaced without tools - Field Repair Buckles have a removable pin design - Replace the buckle with no tools — pull out the pin, snap in the new one Why patented? - STS developed this design - Trademarked - Available aftermarket as a replacement part Practical benefit: - Buy one $5 replacement buckle, extend bag life by years - Don't throw away the bag when a buckle breaks - Compatible with other STS products (some tarps, etc.) Buckle material: 100% Polyformaldehyde (POM, an engineering plastic) — strong, heat-resistant, durable
Lash Loops (Multiple Attachment Points)
Per STS: "Strong and secure lash loops for attaching to kayaks, bikes, motorbikes and roof racks." Built-in lash points: - Multiple loops on the bag - Sturdy webbing (100% nylon) - Reinforced stitching at stress points - Accept standard bungee cords, straps, or rope Vehicle attachment examples: - Kayak: Lash to deck rigging or spray skirt - Motorbike: Secure to rear rack or seat strap - Roof rack: Lash to cargo basket or crossbars - Snowmobile: Secure to rear rack - Bike (smaller sizes): Mount to cargo cage (per FAQ) Use cases: - Secure the bag so it doesn't shift during driving/riding - Multiple lashing options for irregular mounting surfaces - Compatible with various lashing systems (bungees, straps, rope)
Award-Winning Storage System
The Evac Compression Dry Bag HD is Award Winning per STS tags — joining the Dry Bag Collection. What makes it special: - 10,000mm waterproof + 420D durability (rugged) - eVac base (air-out, no purge valve needed) - Hypalon non-wicking closure - 4 compression straps - Field Repair Buckle - 4 sizes from 8L-35L (covers most use cases) - Per FAQ: kayak, motorbike, snowmobile, bikepacking all suitable Best HD dry bag versatility in the STS line: - Soft sleeping bag compression - Bike cargo (smaller sizes per FAQ) - Motorcycle luggage - Roof rack cargo - Kayak deck bag

Position in STS Lineup
Heavy-duty compression dry bag (vs standard DryStorage line) — for vehicle + rugged use
Submersion Warning (Per FAQ)
Per STS FAQ: "The body of the dry bag is waterproof (10,000 mm hydrostatic head). However, avoid submersion since water can seep through the roll-top closure of any dry bag." What this means: - Rain, spray, splashes: OK - Stream crossings: probably OK (briefly) - Submerged in water: water may seep through the roll-top closure Why any dry bag fails at submersion: - Roll-top closure relies on the roll staying rolled - Pressure differential under water can force water through the seam - Hypalon is highly waterproof but the seam + closure has limits - ALL dry bags have this limitation Practical use: - Don't depend on the dry bag for underwater protection - Use the bag INSIDE other waterproof containers for critical items (electronics, etc.) - For submersion, use dry boxes or sealed pouches Critical items: - Phone, camera, documents → use additional waterproofing - Sleep gear + clothing → fine in dry bag (just stay above water line) - The dry bag is for keeping items dry in normal wet conditions
Field Repair (NEW SECTION)
The HD's design supports field repairs: Patching tears: - Use Tenacious Tape or nylon repair tape - Apply to clean, dry surface - Round the patch corners (no sharp tape corners to peel) - Apply to both sides of a tear for strength Field Repair Buckle replacement: - Standard STS replacement buckle (15mm) - Pin removal: use a small flat-head screwdriver or even a fingernail - Snap in the new buckle (it's designed to click in) - Test by pulling firmly - No replacement tools needed Seam leaks: - Less common (tape-sealed construction) - Apply seam seal over the affected area (SilNet or similar) - Field-fix and continue the trip eVac base damage: - The membrane can be damaged by sharp objects - Patch with repair tape - Loss of breathability = loss of compression feature - Can still be used for water protection, just can't squeeze air out
Cleaning
Routine cleaning: - Mild soap + warm water - Soft cloth or sponge - Wipe down exterior + interior - Air dry fully before storing Avoid: - Harsh detergents or bleach (degrades TPU + Hypalon + eVac) - Machine washing (agitator damages seams) - High-pressure sprays - Storing wet (mildew) Cleaning the eVac base: - Same care (mild soap + water) - Don't scrub the laminate (removes the membrane effect) - Allow to dry fully (the laminate needs airflow to dry)
Compression Use Best Practices
Don't over-compress: - Down/synthetic insulation loses loft if compressed for weeks - Long-term compression = irreversible loft loss - Short-term compression (trip use): fine - Long-term storage: leave uncompressed Use only soft items: - Compression straps are designed for soft items (sleeping bags, clothing, etc.) - Don't compress rigid items (cameras, electronics) — straps can damage - Mixed loads: put rigid items in separate bags inside the compression sack Do compress: - Sleeping bags (down or synthetic) - Puffy jackets / insulated clothing - Soft camping gear (towels, sleeping pads) - Clothing in general Don't compress: - Hard cases (use a different bag) - Inflatable items (pad, pillow — use pump sack instead) - Fragile items that can't handle pressure
Storage
Between trips: - Clean and dry before storing - Store loose (open the compression straps partway) - Store in cool, dry place Long-term storage: - Store LOOSE (compressed for months = damaged insulation) - Hang from a hook if possible - Or store in a bin without compression - Periodically air out (every few months) Avoid: - Storing tightly compressed long-term - Direct sunlight (UV degrades nylon) - High heat (degrades TPU + Hypalon) - Moisture + sealed storage (mildew)
Avoid These Failure Modes
Don't: - Submerge the bag expecting it to remain dry - Compress for long-term storage (degrades insulation) - Drag the bag on rough surfaces (abrasion) - Use harsh chemicals on TPU or Hypalon - Machine wash or machine dry - Store in direct sunlight for weeks - Overload beyond the compression straps' capacity - Force the buckle (snaps the field-repairable pin) Common failure points: - Roll-top closure (forgetting to roll enough) - eVac base (puncture from rocks) - Buckle pin (wear over time) - Strap webbing (frays at stress points) - Field patches fail (re-patch in better conditions)
Sustainability & End-of-Life
Repair-friendly design: - Patented Field Repair Buckle = replaceable - Patchable fabric - Modular components - Built for longevity, not replacement Long service life: - 5-10+ years with proper care - One HD dry bag replaces many disposable bags - Lower lifetime waste per use At end-of-life: - Nylon + TPU + CORDURA® can be specialty-recycled - Hypalon difficult to recycle - Most outdoor gear ends in landfill Repair culture: - One Field Repair Buckle extends bag life by years - Patch kit is reusable - Most damage is field-repairable
Activity-Specific Tips
- Sleeping bag compression: Primary use. Strap compression saves 30-50% of bag volume. - Motorcycle luggage: Lash to rear rack with bungee cords. White interior for night visibility. - Kayak storage: Stash in hatches, lash to deck if smaller sizes. - Roof rack cargo: Stack multiple sizes. Lash to cargo basket. - Snowmobiling: Cold-resistant Hypalon closure. Rugged body handles impacts. - Bikepacking
