Size Comparison (3 Sizes)
Air Frame Construction (NEW — DIFFERENT FROM CAMP/CAMP PLUS)
The Comfort Deluxe uses Air Frame construction — different from the Air Zone construction in the Camp and Camp Plus mats.
How Air Frame differs from Air Zone:
- Air Frame uses a structured foam + air core — the air column and foam together provide support. The foam is shaped to allow air to flow between sections, providing both insulation and a stable base. Designed for maximum comfort at extreme thickness (10 cm).
- Air Zone is body-mapped open-cell foam with cutouts in low-pressure areas. Lighter, simpler, but less plush at higher thicknesses.
Why Air Frame for the Deluxe:
- 10 cm thickness would be "spongy" without a structured core
- Air Frame prevents bottoming-out (you don't push through to the ground)
- Stable for all sleep positions and body weights
- Still functions as self-inflating (open-cell foam pulls air in)
Cross-core design: the internal structure has vertical/horizontal channels that create a stable, supportive feel rather than a single block of foam. Improves both insulation uniformity and pressure distribution.
10 cm / 4 in Loft — Mattress-Like Comfort (NEW — LOFT)
At 10 cm / 4 in, the Comfort Deluxe is among the thickest self-inflating mats available. Most SI mats max out at 5-8 cm.
What 10 cm feels like:
- Pressure points disappear (shoulders, hips, tailbone don't touch ground)
- Side sleepers float — no hip pressure on the ground
- Rough terrain (roots, rocks) disappears under you
- Closer to a real mattress than a typical camp pad
- Heavier sleepers (250+ lbs) sit ON the foam rather than IN it
Compare:
- Standard mats: 2.5-5 cm
- Premium SI mats: 5-8 cm (Camp, Camp Plus)
- Comfort Deluxe: 10 cm — top of market
Trade-off: thicker = heavier and bulkier. The Comfort Deluxe weighs 1.9-4 kg depending on size — not backpacking friendly. Designed for base camp, car camping, van life where weight doesn't matter.
R-Value 7.7 — Four Season Warmth (NEW — VERY HIGH)
At R-Value 7.7, the Comfort Deluxe handles all four seasons including extreme cold.
What R-Value 7.7 means:
- Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter — full four-season capability
- Cold nights (32°F / 0°C) — comfortable
- Freezing (20°F / -7°C) — fine, comfortable sleep
- Below freezing (0°F / -18°C) — adequate with winter sleeping bag
- Deep winter (-20°F / -29°C) — borderline; supplement with closed-cell foam pad
ASTM F3340 standard — the industry-wide standard for R-Value testing. All major brands use it now, so the 7.7 number is comparable across Therm-a-Rest, Big Agnes, Nemo, Exped, STS.
Why 7.7 vs Camp Plus 5.3:
- 5.3 is extended three-season (good to ~25°F)
- 7.7 is full four-season (good to ~0°F with a winter bag)
- Comfort Deluxe is the warmest STS SI mat
- Camp Plus handles warmer shoulder seasons
Cold sleepers (run cold, side sleepers, women): the high R-Value eliminates the "cold back" issue common with thinner mats. Stay warm without supplemental insulation in most conditions.
Built-in Airstream HV Pump Sack (NEW — BUILT-IN PUMP)
The Comfort Deluxe storage sack doubles as a high-volume pump sack — inflation is done by filling the sack with air and pressing it into the mat.
How it works:
1. Connect sack to XPEL valve
2. Fill sack with arm strokes (4-8 cycles for full inflation)
3. Press air from sack into mat
4. Close valve
Why this is genius:
- No breath moisture — dry air only, no condensation inside mat (cold-weather bonus)
- No breath moisture = warmer — breath is 100% humidity, dries mat from inside
- Faster than breath — high volume means 4-8 cycles vs 30+ breaths
- Multi-purpose — doubles as storage after inflation
vs breath-inflating similar SI mats:
- Breath inflates with ~37°C humid air
- Humid air condenses inside cold mats → damp foam → reduced loft
- Pump-sack air is dry and ambient (matches use environment)
Practical notes:
- The pump is integrated into the stuff sack (no separate piece to lose)
- The "HV" (high volume) means each stroke pushes more air
- For first-time use, allow 24-48 hours for foam to decompress (factory vacuum pack)
Stretch-Knit Top Fabric (NEW — TOP MATERIAL)
The top surface is a soft stretch-knit that conforms to your body:
Why stretch-knit on top:
- Conforms to body contours (no pressure points)
- Moves with you during sleep (no pulling/tugging)
- Warmer feel than smooth fabric (small thermal benefit)
- Soft against bare skin (most users sleep in boxers/shorts/base layer)
The base fabric is a separate, rugged 75D solution-dyed woven polyester — durable for ground contact.
Two-fabric design:
- Top: soft stretch-knit (next-to-skin comfort)
- Bottom: rugged 75D woven (ground abrasion resistance)
- TPU lamination on both (airtight layer)
Why this matters: keeps the soft comfort of a knit liner while having the durability needed for rough ground. Best of both materials.
XPEL Valve(s) — One or Two
The Comfort Deluxe uses XPEL valves (same as Camp family):
Single XPEL (Regular Rectangular Wide + Large Rectangular Wide):
- One valve for inflate and deflate
- Standard for the single-occupant sizes
Twin XPEL (Double):
- Two valves — one per side
- Each person can adjust firmness on their side independently
- Half the inflation time when both partners pump simultaneously
- Useful for couples with different firmness preferences
XPEL functions:
- Inflate — connect pump sack or add breath
- Deflate — opens wide for fast air release
- Compact deflation — flattens the foam for tighter rolls than standard valves
Side-Loading Stuff Sack
The included stuff sack loads from the side (not the end), making packing easier:
- Slide the rolled mat in
- Compress with knee to remove remaining air
- Cinch closed
Multi-use: as described above, the same sack doubles as the pump sack. STS ships the mat with the sack pre-attached to the valve, ready to inflate on arrival.

Activity Recommendations
Per STS, the Comfort Deluxe is best for Overlanding, Car camping, Van life — the most stationary, weight-agnostic camping styles.
Ideal for:
- Van life / Overlanding — comfort matters, weight doesn't, daily use
- Auto camping — full-size SUV/truck camping, weight irrelevant
- Hunting cabin base — long stays, every degree of comfort matters
- Family camping in cold weather — R-Value 7.7 keeps everyone warm
- Couples / family bed (Double size) — fits two adults comfortably
- Yacht / boat cabin — when weight doesn't matter
- Guest bed in cabin / spare room — storage and setup are easy
NOT ideal for:
- Backpacking (any kind) — 1.9-4 kg is far too heavy
- Bikepacking — bulk in frame bags is impractical
- Thru-hiking — same
- Mountaineering — overkill on warmth/weight
- Lightweight overnight trips — too bulky when packed
Comparison to other high-end mats (non-STS):
- Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm (R-Value 7.3, 460g) — much lighter but inflatable-only (no foam)
- Big Agnes Divide (R-Value 5+, 850g) — air-only, much lighter
- STS Comfort Deluxe = warm + thick + supportive, but HEAVY. That's the trade-off.
Compatible Accessories
Premium Pillows (Aeros Premium, Aeros Ultralight): pair for complete sleep system.
STS Stuff Sacks: the integrated pump sack doubles as storage, no extras needed.
Tent Considerations: the Double size (198 × 132 cm) requires a large tent. Most 3P tents fit comfortably; 2P tents are tight.
Quilts vs Mummy Bags: the rectangular shape and width work well with quilts and blankets. Pair the Rectangular Wide with a 3-season quilt for a station-wagon camping setup.

Initial Setup & First Inflation
The Comfort Deluxe ships vacuum-packed from the factory, so first-use requires extra time:
First-use steps:
1. Unroll the mat, valve open
2. Leave flat for 24-48 hours (foam cells fully decompress from vacuum pack — may take longer for the Comfort Deluxe due to thicker foam)
3. Connect the integrated pump sack to the XPEL valve
4. Pump 4-8 cycles to inflate to full pressure
5. Adjust firmness (may want slightly less pressure than full)
6. Sleep on it one night — foam breaks in to your body weight
7. Subsequent inflations are faster (foam remembers)
Cold mat tip: if stored in cold temperatures, foam is stiff and slow to inflate. Bring inside first, let warm to room temperature, then inflate.
Inflation Best Practices
Use the integrated pump sack (recommended):
- Connect pump sack to XPEL valve
- 4-8 cycles (vs 30+ breaths)
- Dry air only — no breath moisture
Inflation pressure:
- The thicker the foam + air column, the more pressure can be added without over-firming
- Most users stop at "comfortably firm" (no hip/shoulder bottoming-out)
- Side sleepers prefer less pressure (more give)
- Back/stomach sleepers prefer more pressure
Top-off during the night: if the mat softens overnight (foam compression), add a few breaths or pump 1-2 cycles to firm back up.
After 7-10 days of use, the foam fully decompresses and remembers its shape — top-offs become less necessary.
Deflation & Packing
Pack-up steps:
1. In the morning, leave valve open for 10-15 minutes — thicker foam takes longer to release air than thinner mats
2. Press flat with knee weight, working air toward the valve end
3. Roll tightly starting from the valve end
4. Insert rolled mat into side-loading stuff sack
5. Compress stuff sack with knee
6. Cinch sack closed
Storage note: the integrated pump sack IS the storage sack — same piece. No separation needed.
Wet mat tip: if wet (condensation, rain, dew), dry thoroughly before storing. Stuff sacks trap moisture.
Foaming-Leak Detection (NEW FOR SI MATS)
For air leaks in the Comfort Deluxe (more common in thicker mats due to larger air column):
Detection method (per STS):
1. Inflate the mat fully
2. Soak the surface in sections with soapy water (dish soap works)
3. Bubbles will appear at the leak location
4. Mark the location with a pen
5. Dry and apply a repair patch per STS repair kit instructions
Where leaks usually are:
- Around the valve (O-ring issues)
- At seams (less common with Heat-welded construction)
- At punctures from sharp objects
vs inflatable-only mats: the Comfort Deluxe uses foam + air, so a leak is less catastrophic — you still have foam under you, just with less pressure. The mat is still usable until you patch.
Fast fix for valve leaks: often just tightening the valve cap or replacing the O-ring. STS sells valve replacement parts.
Field Repair & Patches
Small punctures: STS mat repair patches work on TPU-laminated polyester. Clean the area, apply patch per package instructions.
Valve leaks: clean or replace O-ring. STS sells valve replacement.
Slow self-inflation: if the foam stops self-inflating well:
- Foam cells may be dirty/dusty — clean the valve area
- Foam may be old/breaking down — replace mat
- Foam may be cold (slows recovery) — warm mat first
Major damage: large tears or seam failures are not field-repairable. Use as emergency backup until replacement.
Coupler Loops: note: Coupler Loops (STS accessory for joining two mats) only work on mats up to 3 in / 8 cm thick. The Comfort Deluxe 10 cm thickness is too thick — Coupler Loops will NOT work on this mat.<
