Kit Components (10 Pieces)
Glass-Reinforced Nylon (NEW — MATERIAL)
Glass-reinforced nylon is nylon with embedded glass fibers for added rigidity and heat resistance: - High heat tolerance — can sit on pot edges or near flames - Rigid yet lightweight — won't flex like pure nylon when stirring heavy food - Durable — resists impact and stress cracking - Dishwasher safe - Used by STS for cooking utensils because of heat resistance Used in: Folding Camp Spatula + Folding Camp Serving Spoon (handle/nylon portion). Why not metal? Metal utensils scratch non-stick coatings, add weight, conduct heat (handle gets hot). Glass-reinforced nylon avoids both issues.
Silicone (NEW — MATERIAL)
Silicone tip on the spoon = heat-resistant, non-reactive, won't scratch non-stick coatings. - Heat-resistant up to 600°F (vs nylon melting around 400°F) - Won't scratch non-stick coatings (softer than PTFE) - Non-reactive — won't transfer flavors - Flexible — conforms to pot corners for scraping The serving spoon has a nylon handle + silicone scoop — best of both materials.
Folding Camp Spatula Design (NEW — DESIGN)
Folding handles save pack space — fold to halve the length. Once out, the handle locks open for use. Folding mechanism: typically a slip-joint or pivot pin. Folding utensils are common in backpacking because they take up ~50% less space in pack. Spatula features: - Long handle (keeps hands away from heat) - Flat, slightly angled head for flipping/scraping - Wide enough for pancakes, grilled cheese, hash browns - Rigid glass-reinforced nylon won't bend when flipping heavy food
Folding Camp Serving Spoon Design
Folding handle + long reach + silicone scoop. - Folding handle — same space-saving benefit as the spatula - Long handle — reaches the bottom of freeze-dried meal pouches (often 7+ in deep) - Wide bowl — serves soup, stew, oatmeal, pasta - Silicone scoop — won't scratch non-stick pot interiors STS specifically designed this for backcountry use — long enough to reach freeze-dried bags, wide enough for proper servings, foldable for backpacks.
3 Spice/Oil Bottles (Different Sizes) — Configuration
The kit has 3 HDPE bottles in different sizes: - 2 × 50ml bottles — small portion control - 1 × 100ml bottle — larger capacity Common configurations: - 100ml = oil (the most-used, larger bottle) - 50ml × 2 = spice blend + hot sauce OR salt + pepper Refilling: Pour from larger kitchen bottles at home. Make sure the bottles are completely dry before refilling with oil (moisture = rancidity). HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): - Stiff, durable plastic - Food-safe - Resistant to most oils and chemicals - Recyclable (code 2) - Stiff enough to squeeze out contents cleanly
Wilderness Wash in 50ml Bottle
The kit includes a 50ml bottle of concentrated biodegradable Wilderness Wash — same soap as the Camp Kitchen Clean Up Kit. Refilling: buy larger Wilderness Wash sizes (250ml or 1L) and refill this 50ml bottle. Multi-use: Safe for dishes, body, hair, laundry.
Hangable Roll Pouch (NEW — DESIGN)
The Nylon roll-out pouch is the kit's organization hero: - Hangable — has a hanging loop at one end - Rolls out flat for component access (like a tool roll) - Rolls up closed for transport - Can hang on tree, vehicle, or pack for clean cooking Why this matters: in a backcountry kitchen, counter space is often nonexistent. Hanging the pouch from a tree branch or vehicle door keeps utensils off the ground (clean) and within reach. Per STS: "Easy access: Hangable Nylon roll can be hung on a nearby tree or on your vehicle."
Leave No Trace Integration
Per STS: "Practice Leave No Trace principles by washing at least 100m from waterways." Why this matters for the Tool Kit (vs Clean Up Kit): - The Tool Kit is for active backcountry cooking (backpacking, paddle touring) - LNT is even MORE important in backcountry (vs car camping) because: - Higher environmental sensitivity (alpine, wilderness areas) - More wildlife encounters (food smells) - Less infrastructure (no campground dump stations) - The 100m rule is the LNT standard LNT Cooking Tips: - Strain and pack out all food particles - Wash dishes 100m from any water source - Scatter dishwater broadly - Use minimum soap effective - Pack out all trash

Folding Spatula & Serving Spoon Care
Glass-reinforced nylon and silicone are both dishwasher safe (top rack). Hand wash with mild soap (Wilderness Wash works) for longest life. Do not expose to direct flame — even glass-reinforced nylon will melt in a campfire. Use cooking utensils on cookware, not in flames. Periodically check the folding pivot for looseness — most can be tightened with a small screwdriver.
Pot Scrubber Care
Rinse thoroughly after use. Shake out excess water. Air dry bristles-up to drain. The PP handle and bristles are durable. Replace if bristles become bent, frayed, or fall out.
Washcloth & DryLite Towel Care
Machine wash with standard detergent. Avoid fabric softeners — they reduce quick-dry performance and absorbency. Air dry or tumble dry low. The 80% Polyester + 20% Nylon construction handles frequent washing.
HDPE Bottle Care (NEW)
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) bottles are durable but require proper care: Before first use: - Wash with mild soap and warm water - Rinse thoroughly (soap residue affects taste) - Air dry completely Refilling: - Use a small funnel to pour from larger source - Fill to shoulder of bottle to leave room for expansion - Ensure bottles are completely dry before refilling with oil (moisture = oil spoilage) - For spices, use dry funnel or measuring spoon Cleaning: - Wash with warm soapy water - Use a bottle brush for hard-to-reach spots - Rinse thoroughly - Air dry upside down Storage: - Cap tightly when not in use - Stash in a cool dry place - For oil bottles, consider refrigeration between trips (extends shelf life) - Wipe threads before recapping Replacement: if the bottle develops cracks, won't seal, or smells off, replace. STS sells replacement bottles.
Wilderness Wash Refill & Care
The 50ml Wilderness Wash bottle is REFILLABLE — buy larger Wilderness Wash sizes (250ml, 1L) and refill. Storage: - Keep capped when not in use - Wipe residue off threads - HDPE is leak-resistant but store upright - If soap separates, add water and shake Multi-use: Safe for dishes, body, hair, laundry.
Hangable Nylon Roll Pouch Care
Machine wash gentle cycle if dirty. Air dry completely before rolling up for storage. The hanging loop is reinforced but check periodically for fraying. If the loop tears, the pouch can still be rolled for transport but loses the hang-ability.
Storage Between Trips
Always air-dry all components fully BEFORE rolling up — trapped moisture causes mildew. Check all HDPE bottles are capped tightly to prevent spills. The compact 9 × 5 × 2 in size fits in any gear box or backpack pocket. Store in a cool dry place.
LNT Compliance (NEW)
Leave No Trace compliance for backcountry cooking:Dishwater disposal: - Dispose of dishwater broadly, 100m+ from any water source (stream, lake, river) - Strain food particles first — pack out all solid waste - Scatter dishwater over a wide area - Never dump dishwater directly into streams/lakesCooking scraps: - Pack out ALL food particles - Do not bury (animals dig it up) - Use bear-proof containers for overnight storage - Burnable waste can be burned in campfire if appropriate Soap usage: - Use the minimum amount of Wilderness Wash effective - More soap ≠ cleaner — just creates more gray water - Pre-rinse dishes when possible Cooking oils/fats: - Pack out used oil bottles (do not dump anywhere) - Wipe oily residue with paper towel, pack out - Spilled oil contaminates soil — clean carefully Spices/oil bottles: - Refill at home, not in the field - Pack out empty bottles when finished - Do not rinse in streams (oil residue contaminates water)
Activity-Specific Tips
- Backcountry/backpacking: Hang the pouch from a tree branch — utensils stay off the ground, in reach. The 10.9 oz is acceptable weight for trips where cooking matters. - Car camping: Use both Tool Kit AND Clean Up Kit together — Tool Kit for cooking, Clean Up Kit for dishes. Or use Tool Kit alone for smaller groups. - Paddle touring: Pack in a dry bag (Big River 13L or 20L fits it easily). Waterproof + tools stay dry. - Family camping: Tool Kit handles small family meal prep. Add Clean Up Kit for full dish duty. - Hygiene backup: Wilderness Wash + the washcloth can be used for body/hair/hand-washing in emergencies - Multi-kit use: Multiple kits can be used for large group camping (one per cook station)
