COOLMAX EcoMade (NEW — MATERIAL)
COOLMAX® EcoMade is the recycled version of COOLMAX — a performance fabric known for moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties. Properties:
- Wicks moisture away from skin (vs absorbs like cotton)
- Quick-drying (faster evaporation than natural fibers)
- Lightweight, breathable
- EcoMade = made from recycled polyester (typically post-consumer bottles)
- Maintains thermal comfort in warm conditions
Used widely in athletic apparel, hiking socks, and now sleeping bag liners. The Breeze uses COOLMAX EcoMade as the primary wicking layer.
Tencel Lyocell (NEW — MATERIAL)
Tencel™ Lyocell is a biobased fiber made from sustainably sourced wood pulp (typically eucalyptus, beech, or spruce). Properties:
- Biobased (plant-derived, renewable)
- Soft, smooth feel (often compared to silk)
- Moisture-absorbing (different from wicking — absorbs into fiber, releases on drying)
- Naturally breathable
- Antimicrobial (reduces odor naturally)
- Closed-loop manufacturing (99% of solvents recycled)
Tencel + COOLMAX = two complementary fibers (one wicks, one absorbs) for optimal moisture management. 70% Polyester (COOLMAX), 30% Tencel Lyocell is the actual fabric composition.
HeiQ Fresh (NEW — TECHNOLOGY)
HeiQ Fresh is a bio-based odor control technology:
- Mechanism: Bio-based amino sugar polymers absorb and neutralize odor molecules
- Bio-based (not silver/zinc-based, more sustainable)
- Wash-refreshed — "When washed, odor-causing compounds are released and the polymer is refreshed for future use"
- No chemical smell unlike some antimicrobial treatments
- OEKO-TEX certified (safe for skin contact)
Per STS FAQ: "The liner is treated with bio-based amino sugar polymers that absorb and neutralize odors. When washed, odor-causing compounds are released and the polymer is refreshed for future use."
This is a significant upgrade over older silver-ion treatments that wash out over time.
Stretchy Knitted Fabric (NEW — CONSTRUCTION)
The Breeze uses a stretchy knitted fabric (vs woven):
- Fits any sleeping bag shape — mummy, tapered, rectangular
- Exceptionally stretchy — moves with the sleeper
- No restricting seams or panels
- More freedom of movement than traditional flat-weave liners
Per STS: "Stretchy knitted fabric fits any sleeping bag shape, offering exceptional freedom of movement whether you're sleeping still or tossing and turning."
Also per STS FAQ: "Any additional layer traps insulating air, and the knitted structure of the Breeze liner traps more air than woven liners, adding a small amount of warmth."
Drawcord Opening Footbox (MUMMY ONLY)
The mummy version of the Breeze features a drawcord opening footbox — adjustable closure that:
- Opens for ventilation (warm nights)
- Closes for warmth (cool nights)
- Cinches around your feet like a sleeping bag
The Traveller/Rectangular version does NOT have a drawcord — only mummy versions.
Per STS: "Mummy version features a drawcord footbox for enhanced ventilation and greater freedom of movement inside or outside your tent."
Arm Openings (MUMMY ONLY)
The mummy version features arm openings — slits on the sides near the shoulders that allow arms to exit the liner. Useful for:
- Reading in bed
- Reaching for water bottle
- Using a phone
- Adjusting layers
The Traveller/Rectangular version does NOT have arm openings.
Technical Hood & Climate Control Shoulder Openings (MUMMY ONLY)
Per STS: "Technical hood and Climate Control shoulder openings are designed to maximise mobility and minimise weight without compromising comfort." The mummy version has:
- Technical hood (vs Traveller's pillow sleeve)
- Climate Control shoulder openings for additional ventilation
Both features are designed for warm-weather backpacking where weight and ventilation matter most.
Sleeping Bag Preservation (IMPORTANT BENEFIT)
The Breeze liner extends your sleeping bag's lifespan by:
- Acting as a clean barrier between you and the bag
- Reducing wash frequency of the sleeping bag (wash the liner instead)
- Preserving DWR finish (body oils + sweat degrade the sleeping bag's DWR over time)
- Preserving insulation loft (less compression from washing/drying cycles)
Per STS: "Machine washable and durable, this liner helps reduce washing of your sleeping bag, preserving its loft and extending its lifespan."
4 Size Options
The Breeze comes in 4 sizes:
- Short — fits users up to 5'7" (66.93 in user height)
- Regular — fits users up to 6'1" (72.83 in user height)
- Long — fits users up to 6'6" (77.95 in user height)
- Rectangular with Pillow Sleeve — fits users up to 6'6" (89 × 31 in dimensions, with pillow sleeve)
Note: Per STS, the "Rectangular with Pillow Sleeve" version is a Traveller-style variant. It's rectangular (vs tapered mummy) and has a pillow sleeve (a pocket to hold a pillow in place).
Dual-Purpose Use (INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE BAG)
The Breeze can be used in two distinct ways:
1. Inside the sleeping bag (liner mode):
- Adds warmth (~5-10°F depending on conditions)
- Keeps the bag clean
- Reduces bag wash frequency
2. Outside the sleeping bag (cover mode):
- Acts as a lightweight summer-only sleeping bag
- Warmer than a sheet, cooler than a full bag
- Use for tropical climates, hostels, summer camping
Per STS: "Ideal for use inside or outside your sleeping bag."
FAQ Key Facts
1. Machine washable? "Yes. The Breeze liner can be machine washed with standard detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, as they reduce wicking performance. Machine dry on a cool or low setting without dryer sheets, or air dry."
2. Keeps you cool? "Breeze liners use COOLMAX fibers that wick moisture away effectively. While they do not actively lower temperature, they help prevent a sweaty or clammy feeling in humid conditions."
3. HEIQ-Fresh mechanism: "Treated with bio-based amino sugar polymers that absorb and neutralize odors. When washed, odor-causing compounds are released and the polymer is refreshed for future use."
4. Adds warmth? "Yes. Any additional layer traps insulating air, and the knitted structure of the Breeze liner traps more air than woven liners, adding a small amount of warmth."

Washing
Machine washable with standard detergent (not technical wash — standard is fine for this fabric). CRITICAL: NO fabric softeners — fabric softeners coat the COOLMAX fibers and reduce wicking performance. The liner will stop wicking moisture if treated with softeners. Wash in cold or warm water on gentle cycle. Zip any closures before washing (mummy variants have a drawcord).
Drying
Tumble dry on cool or low setting (no dryer sheets) OR air dry flat or hanging. COOLMAX and Tencel both dry relatively quickly. Do not iron. Do not bleach. Do not dry clean.
HeiQ Fresh Refresh Cycle (NEW)
HeiQ Fresh is a wash-refreshed technology — every wash cycle releases trapped odor molecules and refreshes the polymer. To maximize odor control:
- Wash regularly (every 3-7 days on extended trips)
- Use standard detergent (not antibacterial)
- Avoid fabric softeners (coat the polymers)
- Tumble dry on low (heat reactivates the polymer)
COOLMAX Care (NEW)
COOLMAX is a synthetic fiber that requires minimal care. Avoid fabric softeners at all costs — they permanently coat the fiber channels and reduce wicking. If the liner stops wicking, try washing with a stripping agent (like Nikwax BaseWash) to remove residue.
Tencel Care (NEW)
Tencel Lyocell is naturally soft and gets softer with washing. Handle with care when wet (slightly weaker than dry). Avoid wringing or twisting. Air drying is gentler than machine drying.
Storage
Store dry, loosely folded, in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. UV can degrade both the COOLMAX and Tencel fibers over time. The compact packing size (7 × 4 × 4 in) makes storage easy — store in the included stuff sack or any small bag.
Travel Use
The compact size (7 × 4 × 4 in) makes the Breeze ideal for travel — pack in carry-on luggage, use in hostels, hotels, or as a clean barrier on trains/planes. HeiQ Fresh prevents odor buildup in enclosed luggage.
Repairing Small Tears
Small tears in the knitted fabric can be repaired with a needle and thread (the stretchy knit is forgiving). For larger tears, STS repair patches may work but the stretchy fabric makes patches less reliable. Contact STS warranty for major repairs.
Activity-Specific Tips
- Backpacking: Adds ~10 oz to pack weight — for ultralight packers, consider whether you need the liner. Skip in warm/dry conditions; bring in humid/buggy conditions.
- Cycle touring: Compact size (7 × 4 × 4) fits in any frame bag. HeiQ Fresh prevents odor buildup over multi-day tours.
- Paddle touring: Dries quickly if it gets wet — useful in wet conditions. Pair with a waterproof outer bag.
- Hostels/travel: Adds a clean barrier between you and hostel bedding. Hygiene + comfort upgrade.
- Tropical camping: Standalone use as a lightweight cover in warm weather. Provides minimal insulation but covers skin from mosquitoes/insects when paired with bug netting.
- Add to winter bag: The knitted structure traps more air than woven liners — adds ~5-10°F of warmth to a winter sleeping bag.
