Wipe the blade and handle with a soft, damp cloth after each use — especially after field dressing, where blood and tissue residue should be cleaned promptly to prevent corrosion and staining. Rinse under warm water with mild soap for deeper cleaning and dry thoroughly. Avoid prolonged moisture exposure on the handle and sheath.
Sheath Care
The synthetic sheath is low-maintenance by design. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed; rinse and dry thoroughly. Synthetic sheaths don't require conditioning the way leather sheaths do, and they're resistant to weather, blood, and field oils. Inspect the retention and belt-loop attachment periodically for wear.
Sharpening
The Steep Country is covered by Benchmade's LifeSharp program: free lifetime professional sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and re-calibration. Send it in or visit any authorized Benchmade dealer. For field maintenance, use quality diamond or ceramic stones at the manufacturer's recommended angle — the hunting-specific blade geometry sharpens easily with standard guided systems.
Storage
Store the Steep Country clean and dry, ideally in its sheath for protection. After a hunting trip, give the blade a thorough cleaning and a light coat of rust-inhibiting oil or food-safe mineral oil before storage. Avoid storing in damp environments (basements, unheated sheds, vehicle trunks) for long periods.
