In addition to the incredibly stable, fast action and the rugged, pure tactical nature of the knife, the Infidel has a cool factor that is hard to describe without physically experiencing it. Benchmade's iconic out-the-front automatic delivers the deployment action through a side-mounted slider that thrusts the blade straight out the front of the handle in a single decisive motion — and retracts it the same way. The double-edged dagger blade geometry is sharpened on both sides for symmetric performance, while the substantial aluminum chassis provides the in-hand confidence that the Infidel has built its reputation on. At 4.9 ounces with a 3.91" blade and 0.59" handle thickness, the Infidel delivers substantial tactical presence without crossing into oversized territory — the kind of weight and balance that communicates purpose. The MOLLE-compatible nylon sheath supports attachment to packs, plate carriers, and tactical gear for field deployment. Made in Benchmade's Oregon City facility and backed by the LifeSharp lifetime service program.

Out-The-Front Automatic Knife

Cleaning
Wipe the blade and aluminum chassis with a soft, dry cloth after each use. For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly — especially the OTF mechanism internals, slider track, and blade channel where debris collects during deployment. The OTF mechanism is sensitive to debris and grit; keeping the track clean is essential for reliable action.
OTF Mechanism Lubrication
Apply a small drop of light machine oil or knife-specific lubricant to the OTF slider track and mechanism internals every few months — or after cleaning. OTF mechanisms benefit from more frequent lubrication than other automatic types because the sliding action involves more moving contact surfaces. Cycle the mechanism several times after lubrication to distribute the oil evenly through the track.
Sharpening
The Infidel is covered by Benchmade's LifeSharp program: free lifetime professional sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and re-calibration. Send or visit any authorized Benchmade dealer. For home maintenance, the double-edged dagger blade requires sharpening both sides in matched pairs — work one side, then mirror the same number of strokes on the other to maintain the symmetric edge geometry.
Safety Check
Periodically verify that the OTF mechanism deploys and retracts smoothly without hesitation. Any sticking, jamming, or uneven action is a sign the mechanism needs cleaning or lubrication — do not force a sticking OTF mechanism. If issues persist after maintenance, send the knife in for service before relying on it for carry or use.
Storage
Store the Infidel in its sheath in a cool, dry environment. The OTF mechanism should be stored in the closed (retracted) position to protect the blade tip and prevent accidental deployment. Avoid storing with the blade deployed — the exposed tip is vulnerable to damage and the extended blade creates snag risk.
Legal Considerations
Automatic knives — including OTF types like the Infidel — are subject to varying federal, state, and local laws. Federal law restricts interstate shipment of automatic knives except for specific categories (military, law enforcement, etc.). OTF autos are additionally restricted or banned in some jurisdictions regardless of general automatic knife legality. State and local laws vary widely — verify your local regulations before purchase or carry. Customers are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable laws in their jurisdiction.
