When to Use
Use the Guided Honing Tool for daily touch-ups that maintain an already-sharp edge — not for restoring a knife that's gone fully dull. A few light passes on the ceramic rod after a day's hard use resets the edge before it has a chance to dull further, and a few passes on the leather strop aligns the micro-edge for clean cuts. For knives that have dulled beyond what a touch-up can fix, use a more aggressive sharpening method or send the knife in for Benchmade's LifeSharp service.
How to Use
Place the blade against the ceramic rod at the guided angle and draw it across the rod with light, even pressure — pulling the blade from heel to tip, alternating sides. Five to ten light passes per side is typically enough for a touch-up. Follow with a few passes on the leather strop, pulling the blade flat against the leather (edge trailing) to remove any wire edge and polish the micro-edge. The whole process takes less than a minute per knife.
Cleaning the Tool
Wipe the ceramic rod with a soft, dry cloth after use to remove any metal particles. For the leather strop, brush off any accumulated metal dust with a soft brush (a toothbrush works well) or wipe gently with a dry cloth. Avoid getting the leather wet — moisture can damage the strop's surface and reduce its effectiveness.
Storage
Store the Guided Honing Tool in a dry environment away from extreme temperatures. Keep the leather strop away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve its surface. The compact size makes it easy to keep with the knives it sharpens — pocket, range bag, drawer, or workbench.
