Wipe the blade and handle with a soft, dry cloth after each use — especially after exposure to moisture, sap, or acidic materials. For deeper cleaning, rinse under warm water with mild soap and dry thoroughly. The striking choil and finger guard areas benefit from extra attention during cleaning — debris can collect in the recessed areas.
Sheath Care
The molded sheath is low-maintenance by design. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild soap as needed; rinse and dry thoroughly. Molded sheaths don't require conditioning the way leather sheaths do, and they're resistant to weather, sap, and field oils. Inspect the retention mechanism and the ferro rod loop attachment periodically for wear — the modular loop connection sees the most mechanical stress over time.
Sharpening
The Anonimus is covered by Benchmade's LifeSharp program: free lifetime professional sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and re-calibration. Send or visit any authorized Benchmade dealer. For field maintenance, use quality diamond or ceramic stones at the manufacturer's recommended angle — the drop-point blade and striking choil sharpen easily with standard guided systems. Avoid rounding the transition between the main edge and the striking choil during sharpening.
Fire-Starting Use
The striking choil is designed for striking a ferro rod to generate sparks — hold the choil against the ferro rod at an angle and pull sharply backward to throw a hot spark shower. Direct sparks onto prepared tinder (the quickLIGHT or other fine, dry tinder) until ignition. Keep the striking choil clean and free of oils that can deflect sparks — wipe with a dry cloth before fire-starting attempts.
Storage
Store the Anonimus clean and dry in its sheath for protection. After use in wet or humid conditions, rinse with fresh water, dry thoroughly, and lightly oil the blade before storage. Avoid storing in damp environments (basements, unheated sheds, vehicle trunks) for long periods — moisture trapped against the blade can cause corrosion.
