Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer 1/4 Zip

We've updated the fit of our Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer 1/4 Zip to improve functionality while also enhancing aesthetics. As one of our heaviest base layer tops and best base layers for cold weather, this garment uses 100% responsibly sourced Merino wool, shoulder panels, and a flatlock seam construction to help minimize chafing as well as help keep you comfortable and temperature-regulated as you enjoy high-intensity skiing, hiking, running, and more.

10-Inch 1/4 Zip For Vent Control
The center-front 1/4 zip runs 10" (25 cm) on a size medium — long enough to dump serious heat on climbs and skinning, short enough to stay clear of midlayers and shells. Reverse-coil construction pulls cleanly without catching base layers below.
100% Responsibly Sourced Merino Wool
Single-jersey 100% Merino wool interlock knit delivers natural moisture management, body-temperature regulation, and odor resistance. Responsibly sourced wool supports animal welfare and traceable land management.
Offset Shoulder & Side Seams
Shoulder panels eliminate top-of-shoulder seams so pack straps and bib straps don't dig into the seam line. Side seams wrap to the front of the body for added comfort under layers and a cleaner fit through the torso.
Flatlock Seam Construction
Flatlock seams sit flat against skin to minimize chafing under layers, packs, and harnesses. Built for long days on snow, ice, and trail where seam comfort makes the difference between finishing and turning around.
Slim Base-Layer Fit
Slim fit intended to follow the contours of the body without bunching. Layers cleanly under an insulated jacket or shell and stays tucked when you reach overhead.
Multi-Activity Versatility
Built for high-intensity skiing, hiking, climbing, running, and cold-weather biking. The vent-friendly 1/4 zip lets you dump heat on the up without removing layers.

Materials & Construction

Fabric Weight
Midweight 250g/m²
Fabric
100% Merino Wool. Exclusive of Decoration.
Center-Front Zipper
10" (25 cm) on size medium
Country of Origin
Made in Vietnam
Washing
Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle with like colors. Use a mild detergent — avoid fabric softeners and bleach, which coat the Merino fibers and reduce moisture-wicking and odor-resistance performance.
Drying
Tumble dry low. High heat can shrink Merino wool fibers and damage the interlock knit over time. For longest life, lay flat to dry when possible — air-dried Merino retains its shape and loft through more wear cycles.
Ironing & Decoration
Cool iron as needed. Do not iron decoration. Printed graphics, heat-transfer logos, and color-block panels can scorch or peel under direct high heat — use a press cloth if ironing is necessary.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino wool, leaving fibers brittle and reducing the temperature-regulating properties that make the fabric perform.
Zipper Care
Close the 1/4 zip fully before washing to protect the slider and teeth. Periodically clear lint from the zipper track with a soft brush — built-up fiber can cause the slider to grab or skip teeth over time, especially on longer-tooth zippers like the 10" center-front.
Storage
Store folded in a dry, breathable space. Merino's natural odor resistance means you can wear it multiple times between washes — a key performance feature that makes it ideal for multi-day trips and travel.

Merino Layer System — SW002821

Built For

High-Output Days
20° – 45°F
Skinning up ridges, trail running, and cold-weather biking where output swings between hard and steady. The 10" zip dumps serious heat without breaking the layer.
Cold-Weather Hiking
20° – 45°F
Shoulder-season trails where you crest a saddle and the wind picks up. Midweight 250 stays warm on the down while the offset shoulder seams keep pack straps from digging in.
Daily Winter Wear
15° – 40°F
Under a flannel or sweater on the morning commute, the woodpile, the shop. The 1/4 zip doubles as a refined stand-alone layer indoors.
Sleep & Camp
Sub-Freezing
Midweight 250 sleeps warm without overheating in a bag. The vent-friendly zip keeps the comfort zone wider across overnight temperature swings.
Complete The System

Pair It With The Bottom

The Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Bottom matches weight, fit, and fabric so your upper and lower layers regulate as one system — no hot torso, cold legs.

  • Same 250g/m² midweight matched warmth
  • 100% Merino wool identical fabric feel
  • Slim base-layer fit won't bunch under bibs
  • Flatlock seams no chafe under packs
Add A Shell

Top It With A Windshell

For full output in real weather, layer a lightweight windshell or rain jacket over the 1/4 zip. Merino manages moisture from the inside; the shell blocks wind and precip from the outside.

  • Windshell cuts chill on exposed ridges
  • Rain jacket full weather protection
  • Insulated vest core warmth, free arms
  • Midlayer fleece deep-cold static days

Prepared with intention.

Every product is carefully inspected and handled by our team before it ships. From fit and function to final details, we make sure each piece is ready for the outdoors ahead—so you can focus on the experience, not the gear.
