Kids' Classic Merino Blend Base Layer Crew

Our Kids' Classic Merino Blend Base Layer Crew combines the moisture management, temperature regulation, and odor resistance of Merino with recycled COOLMAX® polyester. With a flatlock seam construction designed to help prevent chafing and the benefits of Merino, this crew will help them stay comfortable on snow days and activities in the mountains.

Merino + COOLMAX® ECOMADE Recycled Polyester Blend
Fabric blends the moisture management, temperature regulation, and odor resistance of Merino with the wicking properties of COOLMAX® ECOMADE recycled polyester — a 50/50 blend where each fiber plays a distinct role. 50% Merino Wool delivers the natural temperature regulation and odor resistance that keeps the base layer comfortable across a full snow day; 50% COOLMAX® ECOMADE Recycled Polyester delivers the active moisture-wicking that pulls sweat away from the skin before it becomes visible sweat. The blend balances Merino's natural performance with COOLMAX®'s moisture-management technology.
COOLMAX® ECOMADE — Active Moisture Wicking
COOLMAX® ECOMADE Recycled Polyester is a moisture-management technology engineered to wick sweat away from the skin and dry faster than standard polyester. The 50% COOLMAX® ECOMADE content in this base layer (higher than any other product in the family — the only other use is the lining of the Women's Wind Insulated Vest SW003264 at 31.5%) makes this kids' crew one of the highest-performance moisture-management pieces in the line. ECOMADE is the recycled-content version of COOLMAX®, keeping the moisture-wicking performance with a lower material footprint.
50% Merino Wool — Natural Performance For Active Kids
50% Merino Wool delivers the natural temperature regulation, moisture management, and odor resistance that defines Merino performance — the wool manages the body's temperature swings across a full day of snow-day or mountain activity, resists odor-causing bacteria across multi-day wear (kids' base layers see heavy rotation between washes), and provides the natural softness against the skin that pure synthetic can't match. The 50% Merino content is the right balance for a kids' base layer where the Merino's natural performance matters as much as the COOLMAX®'s active moisture-wicking.
Slim Fit — Kid-Appropriate Sizing
Our slim fit is intended to follow the contours of the body — engineered in kids' proportions with a slimmer cut that fits a child's body shape rather than a scaled-down adult fit. The slim fit layers cleanly under a ski jacket, a snowsuit, or a winter jacket without the bunching a baggy fit would create, and the kid-appropriate length keeps the cuffs from extending past the wrists or the hem from extending past the hips. The slim fit moves with the child during high-output play without the binding a tight athletic fit would create.
Flatlock Seam Construction
Flatlock seam construction designed to help increase comfort and minimize chafing — the seams are sewn flat rather than raised, so they don't dig into the skin or create friction hot spots under a snowsuit, a ski jacket, or a backpack strap. The flatlock construction matters most for kids whose skin is more sensitive to chafing than adult skin, and who tend to play and move with less regard for hot-spot development. The flat seam is the difference between a kid wearing the base layer all day vs. asking to take it off.
Snow Days & Mountain Activities
This crew will help them stay comfortable on snow days and activities in the mountains — built for the specific demands of kids' winter mountain use where the base layer handles both the cold chairlift ride and the high-output snowball fight, sled run, or ski school lesson. The Merino + COOLMAX® blend manages the temperature swings and the moisture; the flatlock seams handle the high-output play; the slim fit layers cleanly under a snowsuit or ski jacket without the bulk that would restrict movement.
Multi-Day Wear Between Washes
Merino's natural odor resistance means the same base layer covers multiple wear days between washes — a critical feature for kids' base layers that see heavy rotation and benefit from the parent-friendly reality that a Merino-blend base layer doesn't need to be washed after every single wear. The COOLMAX® moisture-wicking helps the base layer dry between wears, and the Merino's natural odor resistance keeps the base layer fresh across the rotation.
Machine Wash Warm Care Tolerance
Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle — this kids' base layer tolerates warm-water washing that the adult heavyweight base layers cannot. Warm water helps release the sweat, body oils, and playground grime that kids' base layers see in a way cold-water washing can't match. The warm-water tolerance is a parent-friendly feature — the base layer gets truly clean in a regular warm wash without the special-care handling the adult heavyweight base layers require.
All-Season Kids' Versatility
Built for the wide range of kids' mountain activities where a Merino-blend base layer is the right tool — ski school days, sledding, snowboarding lessons, winter hiking, snowshoeing, family snow-play, and any winter mountain activity. The 50/50 Merino/COOLMAX® blend handles the temperature and moisture management; the slim fit layers under any kids' winter outerwear; the flatlock seams handle the high-output play.

Washing
Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle. Wash with like colors — the 50% Merino + 50% COOLMAX® ECOMADE blend benefits from isolated washing to protect the fabric's moisture-management properties and the flatlock seams. Warm water is explicitly allowed on this kids' base layer (warmer than the cold-only spec on the adult Heavyweight Merino Sport base layers and the adult Intraknit Thermal Merino Sport base layers) because the lightweight blend tolerates the warmer wash that helps release sweat and body oils from a kids' high-output play day. Use a mild, technical wash; avoid fabric softeners (they coat the Merino fibers and reduce natural moisture management, and they can degrade the COOLMAX® ECOMADE moisture-wicking performance).
Drying
Tumble dry low. The lightweight Merino-COOLMAX® blend and the flatlock seams tolerate low-heat tumble drying without distorting the fabric's structure or shrinking the Merino fibers. Low heat restores the loft of the Merino and the moisture-wicking performance of the COOLMAX® ECOMADE fibers. Do not tumble dry on medium or high heat; high heat can damage the COOLMAX® fibers' moisture-wicking performance and shrink the Merino. (Note: this is different from the Heavyweight Merino Sport base layers in this family that explicitly require dry flat — the kids' Classic Merino Blend's lightweight jersey tolerates low-heat tumble drying in a way the heavier 3D-knit constructions do not.)
Bleach & Iron
Do not bleach. Cool iron as needed — do not iron decoration. Bleach breaks down Merino wool fibers and degrades the COOLMAX® ECOMADE Recycled Polyester moisture-wicking performance. Iron only on low heat and only on the non-decorated fabric areas; high heat can scorch the lightweight Merino-COOLMAX® blend and damage the flatlock seams.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino and degrade the COOLMAX® ECOMADE Recycled Polyester's moisture-wicking performance — both of which are core to the base layer's performance.
Storage
Store folded in a dry, breathable space. Merino's natural odor resistance means the same base layer covers multiple wear days between washes, which extends the fabric's lifespan and is parent-friendly for the rotation between snow days. Folded storage preserves the lightweight blend and the flatlock seams; hanging for long periods can stretch the lightweight blend out at the shoulder and distort the kid-appropriate slim fit.

Merino Layer System — SW003191 (Kids)

Built For

Ski School Days
15° – 35°F
Full ski-school lesson days where kids ride the chairlift, ski the magic carpet, and learn the basics — alternating between the cold chairlift ride and high-output play on the bunny hill. The Merino-COOLMAX® blend handles the temperature swings without the overheat a heavier base layer would cause on the active segments; the flatlock seams lie smoothly under a ski jacket without the friction hot spots a raised seam would create on a kid's sensitive skin; the slim fit layers cleanly under a kids' ski jacket and pants without the bunching that would restrict a kid's movement.
Family Snow-Play
20° – 40°F
Sledding runs, snowman building, snowball fights, and backyard snow-play where the base layer sees high-output bursts followed by long static sits in the snow. The Merino-COOLMAX® blend dumps heat on the snowball-fight burst and insulates adequately during the long sit on the sled — no clammy chill when the high-output play stops. The flatlock seams handle the high-rep movement of kid snow-play without the binding that would have a kid asking to take the base layer off; the slim fit layers under a snowsuit or a snow bib for full coverage.
Snowboarding & Skating Lessons
15° – 35°F
Snowboarding lessons, ice skating lessons, and terrain-park play where the kid is on the snow for hours at a time with repeated falls and getting-up. The Merino-COOLMAX® blend handles the sweat from the active movement and the cold from the snow contact without the clammy chill a pure synthetic would develop when the kid sits in the snow to re-tie boots or buckle bindings. The flatlock seams lie smoothly against the skin under a snow jacket and pants during the repeated falls.
Winter Cabin Weekends
All-Winter
Multi-day cabin weekends and family winter trips where the same base layer needs to handle a full day's outdoor play and an evening around the fireplace. The Merino's natural odor resistance means the base layer covers multiple wear days between washes — a parent-friendly reality for packing light on a family trip. The COOLMAX® moisture-wicking helps the base layer dry between wears; the lightweight construction layers under a fleece for indoor cabin wear without overheating; the slim fit works under any kids' winter outerwear.
Layer Over It

Top It With Kid Outerwear

The Kids' Classic Merino Blend Crew is the foundation piece of a kid-friendly winter layering system. Layer a kids' fleece, a kids' mid-insulation jacket, or a kids' shell over it — the slim fit adds a clean layer without the bulk that would restrict a kid's movement during play. No bunching under a backpack strap, no binding under a snowsuit sleeve, no excess fabric at the wrist that would catch in a binding ratchet or a ski-pole strap.

  • Kids' fleece pullover or zip casual cold-weather mid-layer
  • Kids' ski jacket or snowboard jacket resort outerwear
  • Kids' snowsuit or snow bib deep-snow outer option
  • Kids' beanie + neck gaiter full head & neck coverage
Layer Under It

Pair With The Kids' Bottom

For the complete Kids' Classic Thermal layering system, pair this crew with the matching Kids' Classic Thermal bottom. Same kid-appropriate sizing, same parent-friendly care (machine wash warm + tumble dry low), same Merino-blend performance philosophy — a full-body base layer system that handles a kid's snow day from chairlift to campfire. The slim fit layers under a kids' ski pant or snow bib without the bulk that would restrict movement.

  • Kids' Classic Thermal Merino Bottom matched kid system
  • Kids' Classic Merino Blend Bottom matched Merino/COOLMAX system
  • Kids' thermal leggings extra-cold layering option
  • Kids' snow pants or ski pants waterproof outer layer
