Washing
Hand wash the Arete Modular Mitts in cold water with a mild technical fabric wash (like Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash). Separate the removable liner from the outer shell before washing. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the GORE-TEX membrane, the leather palm, the EnduraLoft insulation, and the touchscreen-compatible material on the liner. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
Squeeze excess water gently from both the shell and liner (don't wring or twist) and allow to air dry at room temperature. Avoid high heat, which can damage the GORE-TEX membrane, the leather palm, the EnduraLoft insulation, and the touchscreen-compatible material. Don't put the mitts in the dryer.
Leather Palm Care
The water-resistant leather palm requires periodic treatment to maintain its performance. Apply a leather conditioner (like Nikwax Leather Conditioner or Bick 4 Leather Conditioner) every few months, or as needed, to keep the leather supple and water-resistant. Avoid over-conditioning, which can make the leather too soft and reduce grip. Store the mitts in a cool, dry place to prevent mildew on the leather.
GORE-TEX Membrane Care
The GORE-TEX membrane has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment on the outer face fabric that helps water bead up and roll off. When water stops beading (the fabric "wets out" and water soaks in), refresh the DWR with a spray-on product (like Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On). Apply per the product instructions and air dry. This is especially important for the Arete since it's used in wet alpine conditions.
Storage
Store the Arete Modular Mitts in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the mitts in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can degrade the GORE-TEX membrane, fade the colors, and dry out the leather palm. Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can damage the membrane, the insulation, and the leather. The mitts can be stored flat or loosely folded with the removable liner nested inside the shell.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the GORE-TEX shell can be repaired with Tenacious Tape (works on most technical fabrics). For leather palm wear or touchscreen material failure, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product.
