Outdoor Research Alpine Merino 150 Glove 2027

Merino Wool Layering Glove for Cold Weather — Built for alpine pursuits where adaptable warmth and layering versatility are essential, the Alpine Merino 150 Glove functions as a baselayer for the hands. Wear it beneath insulated or waterproof gloves in severe conditions, or on its own during high-output activities when lightweight warmth and breathability are the priority. The stretch knit fabric combines merino wool, polyester, and elastane to balance warmth, moisture management, durability, and dexterity. Merino wool provides natural temperature regulation and odor resistance while maintaining insulating performance when wet, making it an ideal choice for changing mountain conditions. The 150G weight offers lightweight warmth without compromising breathability, allowing the glove to perform as either a standalone layer or part of a complete handwear system. A stretch knit cuff with nylon and elastane creates a secure fit that layers comfortably under a shell or insulated gloves while helping seal out cold air. Combining the natural performance benefits of merino wool with alpine-focused versatility, the Alpine Merino 150 Glove is built for mountain travel, cold-weather layering, and high-output pursuits in variable conditions.

Hand Baselayer for Layering
"The Alpine Merino 150 Glove functions as a baselayer for the hands. Wear it beneath insulated or waterproof gloves in severe conditions" — the Alpine Merino 150 is designed as a hand baselayer that goes inside a shell or insulated glove. This layering system adds significant warmth to the overall handwear system, with the merino wool providing the next-to-skin comfort and moisture management while the outer shell provides windproof/waterproof protection. The baselayer approach is the gold standard for extreme cold conditions where single-layer gloves aren't warm enough.
Standalone for High-Output Activities
"Or on its own during high-output activities when lightweight warmth and breathability are the priority" — the Alpine Merino 150 also works as a standalone glove for high-output activities where the rider needs lightweight warmth without bulk. Trail running, fast hiking, spring skiing, and other aerobic activities where dexterity and breathability matter are all good use cases. The merino wool's natural moisture management keeps hands dry during high-output efforts.
Merino Wool for Natural Performance
"Merino wool provides natural temperature regulation and odor resistance while maintaining insulating performance when wet, making it an ideal choice for changing mountain conditions" — merino wool is a premium natural fiber with exceptional performance properties. The natural temperature regulation means the wool adapts to the rider's body heat (keeping warm when cold, not overheating when active). The odor resistance is a major benefit for multi-day use — merino wool naturally resists bacteria that cause odor, so the gloves can be worn multiple days between washes. And critically, merino wool retains its insulating properties when wet (unlike synthetics that lose warmth when damp), making it ideal for variable mountain conditions.
Stretch Knit Fabric (Merino + Polyester + Elastane)
"The stretch knit fabric combines merino wool, polyester, and elastane to balance warmth, moisture management, durability, and dexterity" — the Alpine Merino 150 uses a blend of merino wool (natural warmth, odor resistance, temperature regulation), polyester (moisture-wicking, quick-drying, durability), and elastane (stretch, shape recovery). The blend combines the benefits of each fiber: merino's natural performance, polyester's synthetic durability, and elastane's stretch for a snug, comfortable fit. The stretch knit construction also provides a close, articulated fit that moves with the hand.
150G Weight — Lightweight Warmth
"The 150G weight offers lightweight warmth without compromising breathability" — the "150G" in the name refers to the fabric weight (150 grams per square meter), which is a lightweight midweight for merino. This weight is versatile — warm enough for cool-weather use alone, thin enough to layer under shell or insulated gloves, and breathable enough for high-output activities where overheating is a concern.
Stretch Knit Cuff for Layering Comfort
"A stretch knit cuff with nylon and elastane creates a secure fit that layers comfortably under a shell or insulated gloves while helping seal out cold air" — the cuff uses a different fabric (nylon + elastane, not merino) for better stretch and recovery. The stretch knit cuff fits snugly around the wrist without constricting, and it layers easily under the cuff of a shell or insulated glove. The snug fit also helps seal out cold air and snow from entering the glove system.
Built for Mountain Travel and Cold-Weather Layering
"Built for mountain travel, cold-weather layering, and high-output pursuits in variable conditions" — the Alpine Merino 150 is designed for the specific demands of mountain activities. Mountain travel involves changing conditions and variable temperatures, so a versatile layering piece is essential. Cold-weather layering requires pieces that work together as a system. High-output pursuits (trail running, fast hiking, climbing) require breathability and moisture management. The Alpine Merino 150 handles all three use cases.
Outdoor Research Quality and Infinite Guarantee®
Built by Outdoor Research — a Seattle-based outdoor gear company with decades of experience in technical apparel — the Alpine Merino 150 Glove is backed by OR's Infinite Guarantee® (lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship). The combination of merino wool's natural performance, the stretch knit construction, and the alpine-focused design makes the Alpine Merino 150 a long-term investment for cold-weather hand protection.

Washing
Machine wash the Alpine Merino 150 Gloves in cold water with a wool-safe detergent (like Nikwax Wool Wash or Eucalan). Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the merino wool fibers, the polyester blend, and the elastane stretch. The merino's natural odor resistance means the gloves can be washed less frequently than synthetic gloves — air them out between uses. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
Lay flat to dry or tumble dry on low heat. The merino wool + polyester blend dries relatively quickly thanks to the synthetic content. Avoid high heat, which can shrink the merino wool fibers and damage the elastane stretch. Don't wring or twist the gloves — gently press out excess water and reshape. Wool can take a bit longer to dry than pure synthetics, but the polyester content speeds the process.
Storage
Store the Alpine Merino 150 Gloves in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the gloves in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can degrade the merino wool fibers over time (though merino is naturally UV-resistant, prolonged exposure will still cause some material degradation). Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can shrink the merino wool and damage the elastane stretch. The gloves can be stored flat or loosely rolled.
Merino Care Tips
Merino wool's natural odor resistance is one of its key benefits — the fibers naturally resist bacteria that cause odor, so the gloves can be worn multiple days between washes without developing smell. When washing is needed, use a wool-safe detergent and cold water to preserve the fibers. Avoid hot water (which can cause shrinking) and high heat in the dryer. Air drying is preferred for merino longevity, though tumble dry on low heat is acceptable for quicker drying.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the merino knit can be repaired with a patch (like Tenacious Tape) or by an outdoor gear repair service. For seam failures or cuff issues, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product.
