Men's Tek Approach Jacket
Men's Tek Approach Jacket
Wind Shell · Approach / Hike / Climb / Gusty Conditions

A wind-resistant soft shell layer built for gusty days. The wrap-around back panel adds comfort when wearing a pack, and seam-reinforcement around the neck adds an extra layer of durability, so you can focus more on the terrain and less on your gear. The Tek Approach is the kind of layer that disappears on the trail — stretchy enough to move through a scramble, breathable enough to wear on a long approach without overheating, and pack-compatible enough to live under a hipbelt without bunching.

Regular Fit
Regular fit through the body with enough room for a baselayer underneath, but cut close enough to seal in warmth without billowing. The fit layers cleanly under a shell for cold-wind days and works on its own over a tee for an approach on a fall morning. Sized to be a true technical layer — a layer to throw on for the wind, not a jacket to size up into.
WindWall™ Fabric
Wind-resistant WindWall fabric — a tightly woven, stretch-infused polyester fleece shell that blocks wind from cutting through. The 9% elastane adds the stretch that lets the soft shell move with the body through scrambles, reaches, and a full day of climbing, without the fabric fighting against the arms or the shoulders. The fleece interior traps warmth without the bulk of an insulated layer.
Non-PFC DWR Finish
Non-PFC durable water-repellent finish for added water repellency — light rain, snow flurries, and trail mist bead up and roll off the surface of the shell instead of soaking through to the fleece interior. The non-PFC formulation means no perfluorinated chemicals in the finish. The DWR is the spec'd detail for the in-between weather that doesn't warrant a full rain shell but calls for more than a fleece alone.
Recycled Polyester Body
Body fabric made with 91% recycled polyester — the recycled content comes from post-consumer plastic that would otherwise be in a landfill. The 9% elastane adds the stretch that lets the soft shell conform to the body through full range of motion. Lightweight, breathable, and built to handle a season of hard use without pilling or losing its wind-blocking properties.
FlashDry™ Collar & Sleeve Pocket
Collar facing and sleeve pocket made with FlashDry materials that offer enhanced moisture management — the collar facing pulls sweat off the neck and out into the air, and the FlashDry-treated sleeve pocket keeps the contents (a phone, a route description, a small energy bar) from getting damp from condensation. FlashDry is built into the fiber, so it doesn't wash out over time.
Secure-Zip Hand Pockets
Secure-zip hand pockets — high-set pockets sit above a pack hip belt and warm the hands, sized to hold a phone, a beanie, or a pair of liner gloves. The secure-zip closure keeps the contents from falling out when sitting down, leaning forward, or reaching overhead. The pocket linings are mesh (see below) for breathability on a long approach.
Bonded Sleeve Pocket
Bonded sleeve pocket with a reverse-coil, closed-end zip — the bonded construction eliminates the bulk of a sewn-on pocket, lays flat against the arm, and sheds snow and rain rather than collecting it. The reverse-coil zip is the technical-spec choice because the zip teeth are protected from abrasion and from snagging on packs or ropes. Sized to hold a phone, a small map, or a route description on a climbing approach.
Mesh Pocket Bags
Mesh pocket bags for breathability — the pocket linings are an open-weave mesh rather than a sealed taffeta, which lets the hands vent heat through the pockets instead of pooling sweat inside them. The mesh construction is what makes the Tek Approach work as a long-approach layer where hands are constantly going in and out of the pockets. Dries quickly when wet hands make the mesh damp.
Elasticated Cuffs
Elasticated cuffs seal out cold air at the wrists and lock in the warmth the fleece interior is producing. The elastic lies flat against the wrist without binding, and the wide cuff opening slides easily over a glove, a watch, or a climbing harness buckle. The cuffs hold their shape through years of pull-and-release, so they don't bag out after a season of wear.
Drawcord Hem
Drawcord at hem for adjustability — the hem cinches tight to seal out wind from below, and the cord lock is sized to operate one-handed with gloves on. The two-handed reach into the hem cinches the fit, which is faster than fishing for a separate hem cord. A small detail that adds a tailored fit option to a regular silhouette.
Wrap-Around Back Panel
Wrap-around back panel for comfort under hipbelt — the back panel is constructed to wrap fully around the waist rather than ending at the side seam, which is the spec'd detail for wear under a pack hipbelt. The wrap-around construction prevents the back panel from riding up when the hipbelt is cinched, and it eliminates the bunching that a shorter back panel can create. A small detail that's a major comfort upgrade on a long approach.
Neck-Seam Reinforcement
Seam-reinforcement tape at neck seam — the neck seam is one of the highest-stress points on a soft shell, both from the on-and-off of a hooded jacket and from the chafing of a backpack strap. The seam-reinforcement tape distributes that stress across the back of the collar rather than letting it concentrate at a single stitch line. The detail is what keeps the soft shell from splitting at the neck after a season of hard use.
Heat-Transfer Logo Placement
Heat transfer logo on the left chest and back-right shoulder — the lightweight, low-bulk branding that doesn't add a sewn-on patch or a heavy print. The heat-transfer process bonds the logo to the fabric, so it moves with the soft shell instead of sitting on top of it. Subtle enough to disappear under a pack, visible enough to read the brand mark in daylight.

Non-PFC DWR (no perfluorinated chemicals)
Machine Wash
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild technical wash. Close all zippers before washing. Wash with similar technical fabrics to avoid pilling from rougher materials. Cold water preserves the elastane stretch, the WindWall finish, the FlashDry treatment, and the recycled polyester — and uses less energy than a warm cycle.
Tumble Dry Low
Tumble dry on low heat for 20-30 minutes to reactivate the DWR finish, or lay flat to dry. The mild heat and tumbling action help the durable water-repellent coating redistribute across the face fabric, restoring the beading that makes water roll off the shell. High heat will degrade the elastane stretch, the FlashDry treatment, and the heat-transfer logos.
Do Not Bleach or Iron
Do not use chlorine bleach, fabric softener, or iron. Bleach breaks down the recycled polyester, the elastane, and the heat-transfer logos. Fabric softener coats the fleece fibers and the FlashDry treatment with a film that reduces breathability and degrades the DWR finish. Ironing directly on the shell will melt the elastane and damage the seam-reinforcement tape at the neck.
Restore DWR
When the WindWall shell starts to absorb water instead of repelling it, re-treat with a spray-on or wash-in DWR designed for technical outerwear. Reactivating the finish every few months keeps the soft shell handling light rain, snow flurries, and trail mist without soaking through. The non-PFC finish means standard household waterproofing sprays work — no need for a fluorocarbon-based product.
Storage
Store hanging on a wide wooden or padded hanger in a cool, dry place. Fold loosely if storing in a drawer. Avoid leaving the soft shell compressed under heavy gear for extended periods — the fleece loses loft when stored tightly packed, which reduces insulating power. The Tek Approach is light enough to clip to a pack with a small carabiner for a long day out.
Zipper Care
Lubricate the bonded sleeve pocket zip and the hand pocket zippers periodically with a silicone-based zipper lubricant. Avoid getting sand, salt, or grit in the teeth — particularly the reverse-coil sleeve pocket zip, which has tight tolerances and is harder to clean once debris is inside. If a zipper sticks, work it open and closed gently rather than forcing it.
