Outdoor Research Men's Vigor Grid Fleece Bottoms 2026

Breathable and Insulating Layering Foundation for High Output Pursuits — the Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom is a performance layer geared toward high-output mountain activity. An internal elastic waistband and drawcord give a snug and custom fit, while flat-seam construction ensures chafe-free comfort. The right hip features a bonded woven Ferrosi zip pocket, perfect for storing small essentials, and ActiveTemp™, a thermo-regulating treatment, manages body temperature, ensuring cool and dry comfortability. A perfect choice for climbers, hikers, and trail runners looking for a versatile, weather-resistant layer that is comfortable and breathable, the Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom is built for daily use.

Breathable and Insulating Layering Foundation
"Breathable and Insulating Layering Foundation for High Output Pursuits" — the Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom is designed as a base layer or midlayer for high-output mountain activities. The combination of breathability (allows perspiration vapor to escape during intense activity) and insulation (traps warm air for cold conditions) makes the Vigor Grid versatile across a wide range of conditions and activity levels.
Performance Layer for High-Output Mountain Activity
"A performance layer geared toward high-output mountain activity" — the Vigor Grid Fleece is designed for activities that generate significant body heat and require both breathability and insulation. Climbing, hiking, trail running, and backcountry skiing are all good use cases. The Vigor Grid manages the body's microclimate during sustained effort, keeping the rider comfortable across changing conditions.
ActiveTemp™ Thermo-Regulating Treatment
"ActiveTemp™, a thermo-regulating treatment, manages body temperature, ensuring cool and dry comfortability" — ActiveTemp™ is OR's proprietary thermoregulating treatment that adjusts to the rider's body temperature and activity level. When the rider is working hard, ActiveTemp™ allows excess heat and moisture to escape; when the rider cools down, it helps retain warmth. The treatment adapts to changing conditions throughout the activity, reducing the need to add or remove layers.
Grid Fleece Construction
The "grid" in "Vigor Grid" refers to the grid pattern of the fleece fabric — a textured knit with raised grid channels that create air pockets next to the skin for insulation, while the open channels between the grid squares allow moisture vapor to escape. Grid fleece is more breathable than standard smooth fleece and is the standard for high-output base layers and midlayers. The construction provides warmth without the bulk of standard fleece.
Internal Elastic Waistband and Drawcord
"An internal elastic waistband and drawcord give a snug and custom fit" — the waist features an internal elastic band plus a drawcord for a secure, adjustable fit. The internal design keeps the elastic and drawcord out of the way under a harness or backpack hip belt. The adjustable fit accommodates different body shapes and layering underneath.
Flat-Seam Construction for Chafe-Free Comfort
"Flat-seam construction ensures chafe-free comfort" — flat seams (also called flatlock seams) lay flat against the skin rather than creating a raised ridge. This eliminates the chafing and irritation that can occur with standard overlocked seams during high-output activity. Essential for long days of activity where even small irritations can become major distractions.
Bonded Woven Ferrosi Zip Pocket on Right Hip
"The right hip features a bonded woven Ferrosi zip pocket, perfect for storing small essentials" — the Vigor Grid has a low-profile zippered pocket on the right hip for secure storage of small items (key, card, gel, snack). The pocket uses Ferrosi fabric (OR's softshell fabric) for durability and the bonded construction eliminates stitched seams for a low-profile, chafe-free pocket. The zippered closure keeps items secure during high-output activity.
Weather-Resistant and Breathable
"A versatile, weather-resistant layer that is comfortable and breathable" — the Vigor Grid provides light weather resistance (handles wind and brief precipitation while allowing vapor transmission) combined with breathability for high-output activity. The fleece construction is not fully waterproof but handles the conditions encountered in most mountain pursuits.
Built for Daily Use
"The Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom is built for daily use" — the construction and materials are designed for regular wear and washing without losing performance. The durable fleece maintains its loft and warmth through repeated use, and the ActiveTemp treatment is bonded to the fibers for long-lasting effectiveness. A go-to layer for daily training and regular mountain use.
Outdoor Research Quality and Infinite Guarantee®
Built by Outdoor Research — a Seattle-based outdoor gear company with decades of experience in technical apparel — the Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom is backed by OR's Infinite Guarantee® (lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship). The combination of ActiveTemp treatment, breathable grid fleece, and thoughtful design makes the Vigor Grid a long-term investment for high-output mountain use.

Washing
Machine wash the Vigor Grid Fleece Bottom in cold water with a mild technical fabric wash (like Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash). Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the grid fleece texture, the ActiveTemp™ thermoregulating treatment, and the bonded Ferrosi pocket. Close the zip pocket before washing. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
Tumble dry the Vigor Grid on low heat or hang to air dry. The grid fleece dries relatively quickly. Avoid high heat, which can damage the grid texture, the ActiveTemp™ treatment, and the elastic waistband. If the bottoms are heavily soiled or have absorbed a lot of sweat, rinse thoroughly before drying to remove salt and body oils that can damage the fabric over time.
ActiveTemp™ Treatment Reapplication
The ActiveTemp™ thermoregulating treatment is bonded to the fabric fibers and designed to last through the life of the garment with normal use and care. The treatment does not need to be reapplied like a surface spray. If you notice the thermoregulating properties are reduced (e.g., the fabric feels clammy when wet or doesn't dry as quickly), the treatment may be reaching the end of its effective life. Avoid using fabric softeners, which can coat the ActiveTemp™ treatment and reduce its effectiveness.
Pilling Prevention
Grid fleece can be prone to pilling (small fiber balls) with repeated wear, especially in high-friction areas (inner thighs, seat). To minimize pilling, wash the bottoms inside out, avoid washing with rough fabrics (like jeans or jackets with Velcro), and use a gentle cycle. If pilling does occur, use a fabric shaver or fine comb to remove pills and keep the grid texture looking fresh.
Storage
Store the Vigor Grid in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the bottoms in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can degrade the ActiveTemp™ treatment and the elastic fibers over time. Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can damage the spandex and the treatments. The bottoms can be folded or laid flat.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the fleece can be repaired with a patch (like Tenacious Tape) or by an outdoor gear repair service. For bonded Ferrosi pocket damage, waistband elastic failure, or seam issues, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product.
