Outdoor Research Freewheel MTB Leather Palm Bike Glove 2026

Durable, Abrasion-Resistant Hand Protection and Cushion for Trail Riding — the Freewheel MTB Leather Palm Bike Glove is our premier mountain bike gloves, constructed with a focus on durability and comfort while trail riding in most conditions. These gloves feature a heavier nylon/spandex mesh back with an abrasion resistant print paired with a durable goat leather palm for secure bar grip, and padded reinforcement delivers extra cushion on rowdier trails. They are touchscreen-compatible for checking trail maps or linking with friends on the fly and feature a back-of-thumb sweat wipe for warmer days. The hook and loop wrist closure provides a snug and secure fit, and strategically placed seams on the index finger deliver better dexterity and comfort on brake levers.

Premier Mountain Bike Glove
"The Freewheel MTB Leather Palm Bike Glove is our premier mountain bike gloves, constructed with a focus on durability and comfort" — this is OR's top-of-the-line MTB glove, designed for riders who demand the best in terms of durability, protection, and comfort. The leather palm construction and padded reinforcement make this the glove for serious trail riders.
Durable, Abrasion-Resistant Hand Protection
"Durable, Abrasion-Resistant Hand Protection and Cushion for Trail Riding" — the Freewheel MTB Leather Palm is built to handle the abrasion of aggressive trail riding. The combination of durable goat leather palm, abrasion-resistant print on the back, and padded reinforcement delivers protection from handlebar vibration, trail debris, and the wear of regular use.
Heavier Nylon/Spandex Mesh Back
"These gloves feature a heavier nylon/spandex mesh back" — the back of the glove uses a heavier-weight nylon/spandex mesh (more substantial than the standard Freewheel's lightweight poly mesh) for added durability and abrasion resistance. The mesh still provides breathability but is built to handle the wear of aggressive trail riding.
Abrasion Resistant Print
"An abrasion resistant print" — the back of the hand has a printed pattern (likely silicone or rubber print) that adds abrasion resistance in the high-wear zones. The print protects the mesh from tearing on branches, rocks, and other trail debris while also providing additional grip and control when the rider grips the handlebar with the back of the hand.
Durable Goat Leather Palm
"A durable goat leather palm for secure bar grip" — the palm uses genuine goat leather, which is the premium choice for cycling gloves. Goat leather is durable, supple, and provides excellent grip on the handlebar. Unlike synthetic materials, leather molds to the rider's hand over time for a custom fit, and the natural grip is reliable in both wet and dry conditions.
Padded Reinforcement for Extra Cushion
"Padded reinforcement delivers extra cushion on rowdier trails" — the palm has strategic padding (typically gel or foam inserts) in the high-pressure zones (under the heel of the hand, thumb base, and ulnar nerve area) to absorb vibration and reduce hand fatigue on long rides and rough terrain. The padding is placed where it matters most without adding bulk that would compromise grip feel.
Touchscreen-Compatible
"They are touchscreen-compatible for checking trail maps or linking with friends on the fly" — the fingertips (typically index and thumb) have touchscreen-compatible material, allowing the rider to use a phone or GPS device without removing the gloves. Essential for the modern mountain biker who needs to check trail maps, message friends, or use a cycling app while on the move.
Back-of-Thumb Sweat Wipe
"Feature a back-of-thumb sweat wipe for warmer days" — the back of the thumb has a soft terry cloth panel for wiping sweat. The terry panel is absorbent and gentle on the face, perfect for wiping sweat-soaked foreheads during hard climbs or in hot weather.
Hook and Loop Wrist Closure
"The hook and loop wrist closure provides a snug and secure fit" — the wrist has a hook-and-loop (Velcro) closure for a secure, adjustable fit. The closure allows the rider to tighten or loosen the wrist as needed for different hand positions and personal preference. The hook-and-loop design is reliable, easy to adjust with one hand, and won't accidentally open during riding.
Strategically Placed Seams on Index Finger
"Strategically placed seams on the index finger deliver better dexterity and comfort on brake levers" — the seams on the index finger are positioned to avoid the brake lever contact zone, reducing pressure points and irritation when the rider grips the brake lever. The strategic seam placement improves dexterity and comfort during braking, especially on long descents.
Total Control Over the Bike
"The Freewheel MTB Leather Palm Bike Glove is designed to give the rider total control over the bike while on the trail" — the combination of secure leather palm grip, abrasion-resistant back, padded reinforcement, and secure wrist closure gives the rider confidence and control. Whether climbing, descending, or technical maneuvering, the Freewheel MTB keeps the rider connected to the bike.

Cleaning
Hand wash the Freewheel MTB in cool water with a mild soap or leather-specific cleaner. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the goat leather, the nylon/spandex mesh, the touchscreen-compatible material, and the padded reinforcement. Wipe the leather palm with a damp cloth after each ride to remove sweat, dirt, and grime. Don't machine wash or machine dry — the agitation and heat can damage the leather and the glove construction.
Leather Conditioning
Periodically treat the goat leather palm with a leather conditioner (like Nikwax Leather Conditioner or Bick 4 Leather Conditioner) to keep the leather supple and prevent drying/cracking. Apply per the product instructions. Conditioning is especially important in dry climates or after exposure to salt/sweat. Don't over-condition — too much can make the leather too soft and reduce grip.
Drying
Air dry the Freewheel MTB at room temperature. Don't use direct heat (radiator, hair dryer, dryer) to dry the gloves — high heat can shrink the leather, damage the nylon/spandex mesh, and degrade the padded reinforcement. Gently reshape the gloves while damp and allow to dry flat or on a glove form. The gloves should be completely dry before long-term storage to prevent mildew and odor.
Storage
Store the Freewheel MTB in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the gloves in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can fade the leather and degrade the nylon mesh. Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can damage the leather and adhesives. The gloves can be stored flat or clipped together (using the hook-and-loop wrist closures) to keep the pair together.
Touchscreen Material Care
The touchscreen-compatible material on the fingertips is a conductive fabric that allows the skin's electrical signal to pass through to the touchscreen. Over time, oils and dirt can reduce the conductivity. If the touchscreen stops working well, clean the fingertips with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to remove the oils and restore conductivity.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the mesh can be repaired with a patch (like Tenacious Tape) or by an outdoor gear repair service. For leather palm wear or padding damage, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product. Leather specialists can also repair or replace worn leather palms.
