Outdoor Research Men's Astroman Air Short Sleeve Sun Shirt 2026

Lightweight Comfort for Long Days in the Sun — the Astroman Air Short Sleeve Sun Shirt is built for sunny outdoor pursuits, offering lightweight breathability, stretch, and comfort for climbing, hiking, and long days on the move. Crafted with a bluesign® approved recycled nylon blend, this technical layer balances durable performance with UPF 30 sun protection for reliable coverage through shifting conditions. Laser-perforated back panels enhance ventilation and airflow, keeping you cool during high-output activity. Finished with a raised heat transfer logo, this refined update to the Astroman collection blends sustainable materials with all-day performance.

Lightweight Comfort for Long Days in the Sun
"Lightweight Comfort for Long Days in the Sun" — the Astroman Air is designed for the outdoor enthusiast who spends extended time in the sun and needs a comfortable, protective layer that doesn't weigh them down. The lightweight construction makes the shirt comfortable to wear all day, while the sun protection and breathability keep the rider cool and protected during high-output activities.
Built for Sunny Outdoor Pursuits
"Built for sunny outdoor pursuits, offering lightweight breathability, stretch, and comfort for climbing, hiking, and long days on the move" — the Astroman Air is designed for a wide range of sun-exposed activities. Climbing, hiking, and multi-day tours all benefit from the lightweight, breathable, and stretchy construction. The shirt moves with the rider during dynamic activities without restricting motion.
UPF 30 Sun Protection
"UPF 30 sun protection for reliable coverage through shifting conditions" — UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) 30 blocks about 96.7% of UV radiation, providing reliable protection for extended sun exposure. UPF 30 is the minimum recommended for sun-protective clothing and is suitable for most outdoor activities. For high-altitude or extended sun exposure, layering with sunscreen provides additional protection.
bluesign® Approved Recycled Stretch Nylon
"Crafted with a bluesign® approved recycled nylon blend" — the shell fabric is a recycled stretch nylon with bluesign® approval. The recycled content reduces environmental impact, the stretch provides unrestricted movement, and the nylon base is durable enough for regular use. The bluesign® approval confirms the fabric meets strict environmental and safety standards throughout the supply chain.
Laser-Perforated Back Panels for Ventilation
"Laser-perforated back panels enhance ventilation and airflow, keeping you cool during high-output activity" — the back of the shirt has laser-perforated panels (small holes cut with a laser for precision) that allow air to flow through the fabric. The perforation provides targeted ventilation exactly where the rider needs it most — the upper back is where the body generates the most heat during activity. The result is enhanced cooling without sacrificing sun protection in the non-perforated areas.
Hidden Snap Front Closure
"A hidden snap front closure delivers a streamlined look" — the front of the shirt uses hidden snaps (concealed under a placket) for a clean, streamlined look. The snaps are functional (can be opened for ventilation) but visually subtle, giving the shirt a clean appearance suitable for both trail and casual wear.
Left Zip Chest Pocket
"A left zip chest pocket secures small essentials" — the chest pocket on the left side has a zippered closure for secure storage of small items (phone, keys, cards, snacks). The zippered pocket keeps items secure during active use and prevents them from falling out during high-output activities.
Raised Heat Transfer Logo
"Finished with a raised heat transfer logo" — the Astroman logo is applied via heat transfer (a printing process that bonds the logo to the fabric) with a raised finish. The raised logo is subtle, durable, and doesn't add weight or irritation to the shirt. The minimalist branding keeps the shirt looking clean and technical.
Sustainable Materials with All-Day Performance
"This refined update to the Astroman collection blends sustainable materials with all-day performance" — the Astroman Air is a refined update to OR's established Astroman collection, incorporating sustainable materials (recycled nylon, bluesign® approved) without sacrificing performance. The result is a sun shirt that performs at a high level while being more environmentally responsible than conventional alternatives.

Washing
Machine wash the Astroman Air in cold water with a mild technical fabric wash (like Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash). Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the UPF treatment, the laser-perforated back panels (can cause fraying or distortion of the perforations), the recycled nylon fibers, and the raised heat transfer logo. Close the chest pocket zipper before washing. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
Tumble dry the Astroman Air on low heat or hang to air dry. The recycled nylon fabric dries quickly. Avoid high heat, which can damage the UPF treatment, the snap closure, the laser perforations, and the raised heat transfer logo. If the shirt is heavily soiled or has absorbed a lot of sweat, rinse thoroughly before drying to remove salt and body oils that can damage the fabric over time.
UPF Treatment Care
The UPF 30 sun protection is inherent to the fabric structure (the tight weave blocks UV radiation) — it's not a surface treatment that wears off. As long as the fabric maintains its weave integrity, the UPF protection will remain. Avoid harsh detergents, fabric softeners, or bleach that can degrade the fabric and reduce the UPF effectiveness. If the fabric becomes significantly stretched, worn, or thin, the UPF protection will decrease and the shirt should be replaced.
Storage
Store the Astroman Air in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the shirt in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can fade the colors and degrade the UPF treatment over time (the fabric becomes less effective at blocking UV as it breaks down). Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can damage the snap closure, the raised logo, and the fabric fibers.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the shirt can be repaired with a patch (like Tenacious Tape) or by an outdoor gear repair service. For snap closure failure, logo peeling, or seam issues, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product.
