Inspired by the verdant canopies of northern boreal forests, the Bailout is Benchmade's tactical ultralight folder — a slim, refined EDC that strikes a balance between classic outdoor styling and cutting-edge performance. Built on the ultralight folder platform made popular by the Bugout, the Bailout refines the formula for tactical and field use with a tanto blade geometry, an aluminum chassis, and a deep-carry clip designed for discreet, secure pocket carry. The tanto blade profile prioritizes tip strength for piercing and tactical cutting tasks, while the slim sub-half-inch handle profile keeps the knife comfortable in pocket, pack, or on gear. At 2.7 ounces with an MOLLE-compatible design and premium aluminum construction, the Bailout delivers the tactical pedigree of a heavier folder in a package that disappears when not in use. The reversible deep-carry clip and ambidextrous AXIS lock round out the modern folder technology. Made in Benchmade's Oregon City facility and backed by the LifeSharp lifetime service program.

AXIS Lock Mechanism

Deep-Carry Pocket Clip
Reversible deep-carry clip carries the knife deep and discreetly in the pocket — the lower-ride alternative to the mini deep-carry clip used on the standard Bugout. Removable for left- or right-handed configuration.
Slim Pocket Profile

Cleaning
Wipe the blade and aluminum chassis with a soft, dry cloth after each use. For deeper cleaning, use mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly — especially the pivot area and lock interfaces. The aluminum chassis is corrosion-resistant but benefits from regular cleaning, particularly after exposure to saltwater or acidic materials.
Lubrication
Apply a small drop of light machine oil or knife-specific lubricant (such as Benchmade's BlueLube) to the AXIS lock bar interfaces and pivot every few months — or after cleaning. This keeps deployment smooth and prevents grit buildup in the lock mechanism.
Sharpening
The Bailout is covered by Benchmade's LifeSharp program: free lifetime professional sharpening, cleaning, oiling, and re-calibration. Send or visit any authorized Benchmade dealer. For home maintenance, use quality diamond or ceramic stones at the manufacturer's recommended angle; the AXIS lock makes full disassembly safe and straightforward for deep cleaning.
Chassis Care
The machined aluminum chassis is durable but the anodized finish can show wear over time. Avoid contact with abrasive surfaces that can scratch the finish, and clean with mild soap and water rather than harsh chemicals. The aluminum construction is more dent-resistant than synthetic handle scales but can still show marks from heavy impact.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry environment. The Bailout ships with a reversible deep-carry clip — remove the clip before long-term storage if you want to preserve spring tension. Avoid leather sheaths for long-term storage in humid climates (leather retains moisture).
