Designed in partnership with members of the athlete team, the Verto Approach Shoes are lightweight, durable approach shoes built to handle tough mountain terrain and the demands of climbing expeditions. They offer multisport versatility and all-day support and comfort on long approaches or hikes, while helping deliver the underfoot precision needed to navigate vertical terrain and via ferrata. The 6 mm heel-toe offset and the 3/4-length ESS rock plate put the shoe firmly in approach-and-climb territory — sensitive enough for edging on rock, supportive enough for a long descent with a loaded pack.

Athlete-Validated Suede Upper
Athlete-validated suede upper provides trustworthy durability — the suede is the spec'd leather for approach shoes because it stretches and conforms to the foot's shape over time without breaking down, holds up to repeated rock contact, and the napped surface grips the foot better than smooth leather when the shoe is worn without socks. Validated by TNF climbers and athletes through real-world use on tough approaches. Premium suede treated for water resistance.
LWG-Certified Leather
All leather is purchased from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries — the LWG is the global standard for responsible leather manufacturing, with ratings that cover water and energy use, waste management, and chemical traceability. The certification is the assurance that the suede upper meets an audited environmental and social standard rather than a one-off tannery claim.
Ergonomic Forefoot
Ergonomic forefoot is designed to improve comfort and climbing ability — the toe box is shaped to give the toes room to splay and grip on a smearing or edging foothold, rather than the tapered, cramped fit of a road-running shoe. The ergonomic shape is what makes the Verto feel like a climbing shoe in approach-shoe form: the foot has the room to work on rock, but the shoe still walks comfortably on the trail.
Heel Pull Loop
Pull loop at heel for ease of entry — a small webbing loop on the back of the heel that lets the foot slide in without a long fight with the shoe's collar. The pull loop is the spec'd detail for any technical shoe that needs to come on and off at the crag, the trailhead, or the approach. Sized to be operated one-handed with gloves on.
Molded-Rubber Rand
Medial and lateral molded-rubber rand — the rubber rand that wraps both sides of the shoe from the toe to the heel, protecting the suede from rock abrasion and giving the foot a stable platform for edging. The rand is the spec'd detail for approach shoes that see real rock contact; the suede alone would wear through in a season. The molded construction is bonded to the suede for a clean, low-bulk profile that doesn't catch on pockets or harness loops.
Scratch-Rubber Toe Cap
Reinforced scratch-rubber toe cap extends over the midsole for durability — the toe cap is the part of the shoe that takes the most abuse on a scramble (toe-jamming into a crack, scraping a granite slab, kicking a step into scree). The scratch-rubber construction is what protects the toes and the midsole from the kind of impact that would otherwise crack a standard toe cap. The extension over the midsole adds an extra layer of protection at the toe-jam zone.
3/4-Length ESS Rock Plate
Internal midfoot stability shank and a 3/4-length ESS rock plate for increased rigidity on vertical terrain — the rock plate is the technical-spec detail that stops the foot from feeling sharp rocks through the midsole on an edgy descent, and the 3/4 length is what gives the Verto its rigid feel under the midfoot while keeping the toe box flexible enough to smear. The combination is what makes the shoe feel planted on a vertical face without becoming stiff on the trail.
20mm Stack with 6mm Offset
20 mm midsole stack height at the heel with a 6 mm heel/toe offset — the stack height is on the lower end of the approach-shoe spectrum, which puts the foot closer to the rock for better feel and sensitivity. The 6 mm heel-toe offset is climbing-shoe territory (most trail runners run 4-8 mm), giving the foot a more level platform for smearing and edging without the elevated heel of a road-running shoe. The combination is what makes the Verto feel like a climbing shoe in approach-shoe form.
Vibram® Megagrip Outsole
Full-length Vibram Megagrip rubber outsole with 3.5 mm lugs balances forefoot climbing and smearing zones with midfoot and heel lugs designed for secure braking when hiking and for walk-offs. The Megagrip compound is Vibram's premium high-friction rubber, the spec'd choice for technical footwear that needs to grip wet and dry rock. The 3.5 mm lugs are tuned for the dual purpose: flat enough at the forefoot to smear on smooth rock, deep enough at the heel to bite into soft ground on a descent.

Leather Sourcing
Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified tanneries
Remove Loose Dirt
Remove loose dirt and debris after each wear with a soft brush — dried mud and rock grit work their way into the suede, the laces, and the Vibram lugs if left to sit. A quick once-over after an approach or a crag session takes a minute and keeps the shoes performing and looking new. The brush gets into the lug pattern of the Megagrip outsole, which is where the deepest grit hides.
Spot Clean Suede
Spot clean the suede with a suede brush and a small amount of suede cleaner — the suede is the spec'd leather for approach shoes because it conforms to the foot over time, but it also stains more easily than smooth leather. A suede brush lifts dirt and restores the nap. For tougher stains, a suede eraser or a small amount of white vinegar on a clean cloth works without damaging the leather.
Hand Wash
Hand wash in cold water with a mild soap or a technical footwear cleaner. Do not machine wash or tumble dry — the machine agitation will damage the suede upper, the molded-rubber rand, the scratch-rubber toe cap, the midfoot shank, and the ESS rock plate. The shoes are built like technical approach shoes, not like canvas sneakers, and should be cleaned like one.
Air Dry
Air dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff the toe box with paper towels or a clean dry cloth to absorb moisture from the inside and hold the shape of the toe box. Do not put in the dryer. Do not place near direct heat. High heat cracks the suede, delaminates the molded-rubber rand, warps the scratch-rubber toe cap, and degrades the Vibram Megagrip compound. Air drying takes longer but preserves the construction.
Restore Suede & DWR
Treat the suede upper periodically with a suede protector or a spray-on DWR designed for technical footwear — re-treating every few months keeps the suede handling wet rock, light rain, and trail puddles without absorbing water. The Vibram Megagrip outsole is unaffected, but the suede is the part of the shoe that takes the most water exposure on a wet approach. A short brush after a re-treat restores the nap.
Lace & Insole Care
Remove the insoles periodically and air them out separately — the insoles hold moisture from sweat, and airing them out prevents odor and mildew between wears. Replace the insoles when they lose their cushioning (typically every 6-12 months for a frequent climber). The laces can be replaced individually if they fray; keeping spare laces in a pack is a small detail that saves a day when a lace snaps mid-approach.
