Outdoor Research Men's Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket 2027

Legendary Technologies and Technical Design for Harsh Alpine Weather — the Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket is built for harsh alpine environments where weather protection and durability are critical to achieving the objective. Engineered with a bluesign® approved, 100% recycled poly 75D shell, this jacket reflects OR's commitment to sustainability without compromising performance. The robust 3-layer GORE-TEX® construction and full seam-taping offer unmatched waterproof/windproof breathability that stands up to the relentless alpine gusts. The Headwall brims with climber-centric design features: a fully adjustable, helmet-compatible hood keeps vision clear and head dry, high hand pockets remain accessible above a hip belt or harness, and the innovative TorsoFlo™ venting extends from hem to bicep for rapid heat dump. YKK® Aquaguard® zippers provide smooth, water-resistant operation, ensuring essentials stay dry in dual exterior chest pockets. Whether facing rowdy ridgeline winds or scaling mixed alpine climbing routes, the Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket is the go-to gear for relentless alpine terrain performance.

Built for Harsh Alpine Environments
"The Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket is built for harsh alpine environments where weather protection and durability are critical" — the Headwall is designed for serious alpine use where weather can change rapidly and the rider needs reliable, durable protection. The combination of GORE-TEX® waterproofing, durable construction, and climber-specific features makes the Headwall a go-to for alpine climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing.
100% Recycled Poly 75D Shell (bluesign® Approved)
"Engineered with a bluesign® approved, 100% recycled poly 75D shell" — the Headwall uses a 75D (denier) recycled polyester shell that's both durable and sustainable. The 75D weight is heavy enough to resist abrasion from rock, ice, and pack wear but not so heavy that it becomes stiff or noisy. The 100% recycled content reduces environmental impact, and the bluesign® approval confirms the fabric meets strict environmental and safety standards.
Robust 3-Layer GORE-TEX® Construction
"The robust 3-layer GORE-TEX® construction and full seam-taping offer unmatched waterproof/windproof breathability" — the 3-layer GORE-TEX® construction is the most durable and reliable waterproof/breathable technology available. The 3 layers are: outer face fabric (75D recycled poly), GORE-TEX® membrane, and inner liner fabric — all bonded together for maximum durability. Full seam-taping ensures no water can seep through the stitching, and the membrane's breathability allows moisture vapor to escape during high-output activity.
Fully Adjustable, Helmet-Compatible Hood
"A fully adjustable, helmet-compatible hood keeps vision clear and head dry" — the Headwall's hood is designed to fit comfortably over a climbing or skiing helmet, with adjustments at the crown, face, and back of the head to customize the fit. The helmet compatibility ensures the hood doesn't restrict vision or interfere with the helmet's protection during climbing or skiing.
High Hand Pockets for Harness Compatibility
"High hand pockets remain accessible above a hip belt or harness" — the Headwall's hand pockets are positioned higher on the torso (above the hip line) so they remain accessible when wearing a backpack hip belt or a climbing harness. This is a critical climber-centric design feature that prevents the pockets from being covered or inaccessible when wearing a pack or harness.
TorsoFlo™ Venting for Heat Dump
"The innovative TorsoFlo™ venting extends from hem to bicep for rapid heat dump" — the Headwall features OR's proprietary TorsoFlo™ venting system, which uses a series of zippers that extend from the hem of the jacket up to the bicep. This creates a two-way zipper system that allows the rider to open the jacket from the bottom (for full ventilation) or from the top (for head/neck venting) depending on the conditions. The TorsoFlo™ is ideal for high-output activities where heat management is critical.
YKK® Aquaguard® Zippers
"YKK® Aquaguard® zippers provide smooth, water-resistant operation" — the Headwall uses YKK® Aquaguard® zippers, which are water-resistant coated zippers that prevent water from seeping through the zipper teeth. YKK® is the industry standard for reliability, and the Aquaguard® coating adds weather resistance for wet conditions.
Dual Exterior Chest Pockets
"Dual exterior chest pockets keep essentials safe and dry" — the Headwall has two chest pockets that are accessible above a harness or hip belt. The chest pockets keep essentials (phone, snacks, map, compass) secure and accessible during climbing and skiing. The YKK® Aquaguard® zippers on the pockets prevent water from entering, keeping the contents dry in wet conditions.
3-Layer Construction vs 2-Layer and 2.5-Layer
The Headwall uses 3-layer GORE-TEX® construction, which is the most durable and highest-performance waterproof/breathable technology available. The 3 layers (face fabric + membrane + inner liner) are bonded together as a single fabric, eliminating the need for a separate hanging liner. This results in a lighter, more comfortable, and more durable construction compared to 2-layer (which requires a separate hanging liner) or 2.5-layer (which has a printed or sprayed-on inner coating that is less durable).
Sustainability: 100% Recycled Poly and bluesign® Approved
"100% recycled poly 75D shell" + "bluesign® approved" — the Headwall's commitment to sustainability is shown in the 100% recycled polyester content and bluesign® approval. The recycled poly reduces waste and environmental impact compared to virgin polyester, while the bluesign® certification ensures the manufacturing process meets strict environmental and safety standards. For the modern mountaineer who cares about environmental impact, the Headwall provides assurance that the gear is made responsibly.
For Rowdy Ridgeline Winds and Mixed Alpine Climbing
"Whether facing rowdy ridgeline winds or scaling mixed alpine climbing routes, the Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket is the go-to gear for relentless alpine terrain performance" — the Headwall is designed for the specific demands of technical alpine climbing and skiing. Mixed alpine routes (where rock, ice, and snow alternate) require a jacket that can handle abrasion, wind, and moisture simultaneously. The 3L GORE-TEX® + 75D recycled poly combination is the right balance for these conditions.
Outdoor Research Quality and Infinite Guarantee®
Built by Outdoor Research — a Seattle-based outdoor gear company with decades of experience in technical apparel — the Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket is backed by OR's Infinite Guarantee® (lifetime guarantee against defects in materials and workmanship). The combination of 3L GORE-TEX® construction, recycled materials, and climber-specific design makes the Headwall a long-term investment for serious alpine use.

Men's sizes (specific range available on the OR product page — typically S to XL)
Washing
Machine wash the Headwall GORE-TEX® 3L Jacket in cold water with a mild technical fabric wash (like Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash). Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can damage the GORE-TEX® membrane, the DWR coating, the recycled poly shell, and the YKK® Aquaguard® zippers. Close all zippers and pockets before washing. Use a gentle cycle and rinse thoroughly.
Drying
Tumble dry the Headwall on low heat or hang to air dry. The 3-layer GORE-TEX® construction dries relatively quickly thanks to the membrane's breathability. Use a low-heat tumble dry cycle (or a brief cycle with a clean tennis ball) to help reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating. Avoid high heat, which can damage the membrane, the DWR coating, and the zippers.
DWR Refresh
The GORE-TEX® membrane has a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment on the outer face fabric that helps water bead up and roll off. When water stops beading (the fabric "wets out" and water soaks in), refresh the DWR with a spray-on product (like Nikwax TX.Direct Spray-On). Apply per the product instructions and air dry. The 3-layer construction means the DWR is on the face fabric only, and refreshing it is important for the jacket to maintain its performance in wet conditions.
Zipper Care
The YKK® Aquaguard® zippers have a water-resistant coating that can wear off over time. Keep the zippers clean and free of debris (dirt, sand, salt) by rinsing with fresh water and brushing gently with a soft brush. If the zippers start to stick or the coating wears off, apply a zipper lubricant (like Nikwax Zipper Care) to maintain smooth operation. Don't force a stuck zipper — work it back and forth gently to clear any obstruction.
Storage
Store the Headwall Jacket in a cool, dry place when not in use. Avoid leaving the jacket in direct sunlight for extended periods — UV exposure can degrade the GORE-TEX® membrane and fade the colors over time. Don't store in a hot car — extreme heat can damage the membrane, the DWR coating, and the zippers. Hang the jacket on a wide hanger to maintain the shoulder shape and prevent creasing.
Repair
Small tears or holes in the GORE-TEX® shell can be repaired with Tenacious Tape (works on most technical fabrics including GORE-TEX®) or by an outdoor gear repair service. For GORE-TEX® membrane failures, YKK® Aquaguard® zipper damage, or seam tape issues, contact Outdoor Research for warranty service — the Infinite Guarantee® covers defects in materials and workmanship for the life of the product.
