Washing
Close the back pocket zip and leg zips before washing. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors. Use a mild technical cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash or Granger’s Performance Wash to maintain the DRYVENT™ 2L membrane performance and the non-PFC DWR finish on the 130 g/m² body. Regular household detergent leaves residue that degrades the DWR and can clog the membrane’s pores. Avoid chlorine bleach, fabric softener, and dryer sheets. Do not dry clean (solvents destroy the DWR + the DRYVENT™ membrane).
Drying
Tumble dry on low for 10–15 minutes to reactivate the DWR finish. A short cycle is usually enough — long high-heat cycles can damage the DRYVENT™ 2L membrane, the WINDWALL™ lower-body lining, the heat-transfer logo, and the hook-and-loop cuff tabs. Hang dry is also fine if you tumble briefly afterward to restore water beading.
DWR Re-Proofing
When water stops beading on the 130 g/m² body, re-treat with a spray-on DWR such as Nikwax TX Direct or Granger’s Performance Repel. Apply to the clean, damp pant, paying extra attention to the seat and knees (most abrasion-prone areas) and the lower legs (most rain-splash exposure). A short low-heat tumble helps set the finish.
DRYVENT™ 2L Membrane Care
DRYVENT™ 2L is a fully seam-sealed waterproof membrane — built for sustained wet-weather use. The internal waterproof membrane + seam-seal construction is durable, but the DWR face fabric wears over time. Avoid folding or compressing the pant tightly for long periods, which can crack the membrane. Store hanging or loosely folded. Don’t store wet, and don’t use harsh solvents. With proper care, DRYVENT™ 2L rain pants last 3–5 years of regular wet-weather use.
3-in-1 Lining System Care
The 50 g/m² mesh upper-body lining is the most breathable + lightest part of the pant — but also the most likely to pill or tear with heavy wear. The 76 g/m² WINDWALL™ lower-body lining adds structure + wind protection. Don’t pick at the mesh if it snags (it can run). If the WINDWALL™ lining develops pills at high-friction zones (inner thigh, seat), use a fabric shaver to refresh.
Stow-in-Back-Pocket Cycle
The stow-in-back-pocket design is a real convenience feature. To pack: fold lengthwise, then roll or fold into thirds before tucking into the secure-zip welt back pocket and zipping closed. Don’t force the pant into the pocket if it’s overstuffed — stresses the pocket seam and the zip. After extended packing, give the pant a quick shake-out when you unpack to release any creasing. Don’t leave the pant packed in the pocket long-term (compression can flatten the WINDWALL™ lining over time).
Reverse-Coil Leg Zips
The reverse-coil leg zips that open from cuff to knee are the most-operated closure on the pant. The reverse-coil construction resists snagging. Keep the coils clear of debris with a soft brush, lubricate sparingly with a silicone-based lubricant (Nikwax, GE Silicone II, or beeswax) if they start sticking, and never force a stuck zipper — back it off and clear debris from the coil. The hook-and-loop cuff tabs above the leg zips need to be opened to use the zips for full on/off.
Hook-and-Loop Cuff Tabs
The hook-and-loop cuff tabs are the most common wear point on rain pants — they take constant friction from boots and shoes. Check the cuff-tab stitching periodically; if it starts to fray, a quick hand-stitch with matching thread restores it. Don’t over-cinch — the hook-and-loop can wear through the fabric over time if cinched too tight repeatedly.
Reflective Detail Care
The reflective bar on the calves is durable but not indestructible. Avoid ironing directly on the reflective area — high heat can melt or distort the reflective film. If the reflective starts to peel at the edges (typical after years of heavy wear), a small dab of fabric adhesive from a craft store can re-seal the edge.
Heat-Transfer Logo Care
The heat-transfer logo on the left thigh is durable but can crack or peel with heavy wear. Avoid ironing directly on the logo (iron inside-out or use a press cloth). If the logo starts to peel at the edges, a small dab of fabric adhesive can re-seal.
ID Label Care
Use the inside ID label with the teen’s name — it’s there for a reason. At school, ski school, or summer camp, identical rain pants get mixed up. A fabric-safe laundry marker on the ID label lasts for years.
Teen-Specific Care Notes
Teen rain pants get dirty fast — mud, food, school cafeteria spills, etc. Spot-clean small stains promptly with a damp cloth and mild soap. For heavier soiling (mud, grass, food), pre-treat the spot with a small amount of mild detergent, then wash the whole pant on a gentle cold cycle. Don’t use bleach, oxygen cleaners, or enzyme cleaners on teen rain pants — they break down the DRYVENT™ 2L membrane and the non-PFC DWR finish.
Sizing & Growing Room
TNF Teen rain pants run true to size, but most parents buy ½ to 1 size up to allow for growing room and to extend the pant’s usable life across 1–2 seasons. If the pant is too tight, the legs can’t be pulled over boots easily, the DRYVENT™ membrane can’t flex with movement, and the inseam is too short — the most common sizing complaint in teen rain pants. With the right amount of growing room, the pant can carry a teen through a full school year + summer activities.
Storage (Off-Season)
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. Don’t leave the pant packed in the back pocket long-term — unpack and store flat or hanging during the off-season. Long-term compression can flatten the WINDWALL™ lining and degrade the DRYVENT™ 2L membrane. Keep out of direct sunlight (UV degrades the 100% recycled polyester and the non-PFC DWR over time).
