Cleaning
Machine wash cold (30 °C) on a gentle cycle with a mild technical or technical-outerwear detergent (like Nikwax Tech Wash). Avoid regular household detergent, which strips the non-PFC DWR finish and leaves residues that can degrade the FUTURELIGHT™ 3L membrane. Close all YKK® AquaGuard® zippers and the hook-and-loop cuff tabs before washing to prevent damage to the face fabric and the waterproof zippers. Use two rinse cycles to fully flush detergent residue. Don't use bleach, fabric softener, or stain remover — these clog the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane pores, strip the DWR finish, and damage the brushed-tricot overlay at the chin.
Drying
Tumble dry on low to medium heat for 20–30 minutes — the gentle heat reactivates the non-PFC DWR finish on both the main body (70D recycled nylon ripstop) and the lighter 20D recycled poly/nylon hood/underarm/back panels. Alternatively, iron on low heat with a cloth barrier between the iron and the FUTURELIGHT™ 3L face. Reshape the hood and smooth the draft flap while damp. Avoid high heat — it can damage the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane, delaminate the 3-layer construction, and warp the riveted cord-lock adjustment on the hood.
FUTURELIGHT™ 3L Membrane
The FUTURELIGHT™ 3L membrane is the waterproof core — never dry-clean or use solvents, which destroy the membrane and the seam-seal tape. The main body uses 70D recycled nylon ripstop + tricot backer (heavy-duty alpine protection); the hood/underarms/back use a lighter 20D recycled poly/nylon (for air permeability and comfort). Both are fully seam-sealed. If water soaks through after years of heavy alpine use, the membrane is no longer trustworthy and the jacket should be sent to TNF for repair service under the limited lifetime guarantee.
DWR Maintenance
The non-PFC DWR finish on both the 70D main body and the 20D hood/underarm/back panels wears with use and wash cycles. When water stops beading on the surface, wash the jacket first + tumble dry on low to medium heat to reactivate. If beading still doesn't return, apply a FUTURELIGHT-approved spray-on DWR restorer or wash-in restorer rated for 3-layer waterproof membranes. Re-treat periodically — the lightweight 20D panels in particular lose DWR faster than the 70D body.
Helmet-Compatible Hood + Bonded Brim + Riveted Cord-Lock
The fully adjustable hood is designed to fit over a climbing helmet with a structured bonded brim that doesn't flop in alpine winds. The riveted cord-lock adjustment system is durable but the cord-lock mechanism can collect ice and grit; brush it clean periodically so it locks firmly. Don't force the cord-lock past its stops. The bonded brim can be damaged by sharp edges (carabiner clips) — inspect periodically for cracking.
#5 YKK® VISLON® AquaGuard® CF Zip
The center front uses a #5 YKK® VISLON® AquaGuard® zipper — chunky, durable teeth with a water-resistant coating. The coating wears over time; if the zipper starts leaking through in heavy rain, apply a fresh zipper-waterproofing treatment to restore full water resistance. Brush the teeth with a soft toothbrush to clear grit, and lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant if the slider stiffens. The internal draft flap behind the zipper has laser-cut microperforations for air permeability — these perforations can stretch over time, so confirm the draft flap still covers the zipper teeth when zipped closed.
Draft Flap Summit Series™ Microperforations
The internal draft flap features laser-cut Summit Series™ microperforations for air permeability — small holes that allow interior moisture to vent without compromising weather protection. Confirm the perforations are clear of body oils and sweat residue (which can clog the holes); wash the jacket regularly to keep the perforations breathable. The microperf zones are tight; don't tear or pick at them.
Underarm Vents with AquaGuard® Zips + Bumper Stops
Underarm vents regulate temperature on high-output climbs — open on the approach, close for storms. The YKK® AquaGuard® zips with bumper stops are designed to seal moisture without a zipper garage. Don't force the slider past its stops. The underarm panel is the lighter 20D FUTURELIGHT™ 3L fabric, which breathes better than the 70D main body — confirm the 20D panel isn't pinned under a pack strap, which can stress the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane.
Chest Pockets (2 + Internal Gear Loop)
The two chest pockets use #3 YKK® AquaGuard® zips with bumper stops — designed for use with a backpack hip-belt or climbing harness so the pockets stay above the belt line. The left chest pocket has an internal gear loop and mesh pouch for organizing small essentials (small cams, ice screws, slings). Brush the AquaGuard® zippers with a soft toothbrush to clear grit. Don't over-stuff the pockets, which warps the opening and stresses the YKK® water-resistant coating.
Internal Mesh Drop-in Pockets (2)
Two internal mesh drop-in pockets are sized for skins, hats, or warming layers. The mesh weave is durable but can tear with sharp or pointed objects; store knives, multi-tools, and sharp tools in sheaths or pouches, not loose in the mesh. Periodic brushing clears dust that accumulates in the mesh.
Adjustable Hook-and-Loop Cuffs
The cuff tabs adjust the cuff opening to fit over or under gloves. Hook-and-loop wears with repeated use — periodic soft brushing of the hook strip keeps the loop engaging properly. If the hook-and-loop loses grip, don't force it; replacement is through TNF repair. Adjust both cuffs to the same tightness for symmetry.
Internal Hem Cinch-Cord with Dual Riveted Cord Locks
The internal hem cinch-cord has riveted cord locks on BOTH sides for independent two-handed adjustment (a key alpine feature — you can cinch the hem from one side while leaning against a rock or belaying). The cord locks are durable but can collect grit and ice; brush them periodically. Don't over-tighten the hem cinch — over-tension restricts movement and stresses the hem seam.
Brushed-Tricot Overlay with Laser-Cut Perforations (Chin & Neck)
The soft brushed-tricot overlay with laser-cut perforations on the chin and back of neck provides next-to-skin comfort and air permeability where the hood and collar contact bare skin. Body oils can clog the perforations; wash the jacket regularly to keep the chin panel breathable. The brushed tricot pile can mat where it contacts the helmet's chin strap; brush the pile upright after heavy use.
Locker Loop (Center Back Label)
The locker loop integrated into the center back label lets you hang the jacket by its loop on a hook or carabiner — useful in alpine huts and gear rooms. The loop and the label are reinforced, but inspect periodically; if the loop tears off, hand-stitch it back or take to TNF repair. Don't hang the jacket by the locker loop long-term in storage.
Re-Treat Spray Tips
When re-treating the FUTURELIGHT™ 3L with a DWR spray, hold the can 6–8 inches from the face fabric and apply in light, even strokes. Don't saturate the bonded hood brim or the brushed-tricot chin overlay. After spraying, tumble dry on low to medium heat to cure the DWR — heat bonds the DWR to the face fabric.
Storage
Hang on a wide hanger in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with all zippers closed. UV exposure degrades the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane and fades the face fabric over time. Don't compress the jacket under heavy gear for long periods — long-term compression can crack the FUTURELIGHT™ 3L laminate and damage the membrane's nano-porous structure. If folding for transport, fold loosely and unpack on arrival. Confirm the jacket is fully dry before storage to prevent mildew in the brushed-tricot lining and internal mesh pockets.
