Men’s Summit Series Chamlang Soft Shell Jacket
Men’s Summit Series Chamlang Soft Shell Jacket
Apparel · Outerwear / Alpine Soft Shell

Reach your high-alpine goals in the Men’s Summit Series Chamlang Soft Shell Jacket. Featuring four-way stretch fabric for maximum mobility, wind-resistant WINDWALL™ technology to help block frigid mountain gusts and harness-compatible pockets for easy access while climbing, this slim-fit layer is built for confidence above tree line.

WINDWALL™ Wind-Resistant Double Weave
70D × 300D 240 g/m² WINDWALL™ double-weave fabric — wind-resistant, breathable, and four-way stretch. Bonded construction adds weather resistance and durability while keeping the soft-shell feel
Targeted Lightweight Soft-Shell Panels
Back panel, underarms, and lower-front body use a lighter 70D 179 g/m² WINDWALL™ ripstop (88% recycled nylon, 12% elastane) — improves breathability and range of motion in high-heat, high-mobility zones
Non-PFC DWR Finish
Non-PFC durable water-repellent finish on the face fabric sheds light rain, snow, and spindrift without PFCs — weather-resistant, not fully waterproof
Climbing-Helmet-Compatible Hood
Adjustable hood fits over a climbing helmet — pre-tensioned elastic opening keeps the hood snug around the helmet brim, and the rear cinch-cord with cord lock dials in a secure fit
Harness- & Pack-Compatible Pockets
Two alpine pockets positioned high on the chest with exposed, water-resistant, reverse-coil zips — sit above a harness or pack hipbelt so storage stays accessible while climbing
Internal Mesh Chest Pocket
Single chest pocket with a water-resistant, reverse-coil zip and internal mesh pouch — quick stash for gels, maps, or a small phone that needs to breathe
Water-Resistant Center Front Zip
Exposed, water-resistant, reverse-coil center front zip — keeps wind and weather out while remaining low-bulk and easy to operate with gloves
Internal Seam Tape (Targeted)
Targeted internal use of seam tape reduces bulk and increases range of motion — keeps critical seams from abrading against baselayers without the weight/bulk of full seam taping
Bonded Cuffs with Pre-Tensioned Elastic
Bonded cuffs with partial, pre-tensioned encased elastic lock the sleeves in place over gloves or watch GPS without flapping at high arm cadence
Internal Hem Cinch-Cord
Internal hem cinch-cord with riveted cord locks on both sides for adjustability; cinch-cord ends exit into the hand pockets for on-the-fly tightening under a harness or pack belt
Articulated Patterning
Articulated patterning at the elbows and shoulders provides fit and mobility for high reaches and dynamic movement
Recycled Materials
Main body 93% recycled nylon; targeted panels 88% recycled nylon
Slim Fit
Athletic, close-to-body cut that layers cleanly over a baselayer and accommodates a climbing harness without excess bulk at the waist

Washing
Close all zippers before washing. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with like colors. Use a mild technical cleaner such as Nikwax Tech Wash or Granger’s Performance Wash to maintain the non-PFC DWR finish on the WINDWALL™ double weave (main body) and the WINDWALL™ ripstop (targeted panels). Regular household detergent leaves residue that degrades the DWR and can clog the brushed-back interior of the 240 g/m² double weave. Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and dryer sheets. Do not dry clean (solvents destroy the DWR + the 7% and 12% elastane stretch).
Drying
Tumble dry on low to reactivate the DWR finish. A short 10–15 minute low-heat cycle is usually enough — long high-heat cycles can damage the 7%/12% elastane stretch, melt or distort the bonded construction, and delaminate the targeted internal seam tape. Hang dry is also fine if you tumble briefly afterward to restore water beading on the face fabric.
DWR Re-Proofing
When water stops beading on the 70D × 300D 240 g/m² WINDWALL™ double weave (typically after heavy use, multiple washes, or extended exposure to rain/snow), re-treat with a spray-on DWR such as Nikwax TX Direct or Granger’s Performance Repel. Apply to the clean, damp jacket, paying extra attention to the shoulders (where pack straps wear the DWR fastest), the hood, and the upper-back area. A short low-heat tumble helps set the finish.
Targeted Seam Tape Care
The Chamlang uses targeted internal seam tape (not fully taped) — this is a deliberate design choice for low-bulk comfort and range of motion, NOT a defect. The tape covers the highest-exposure seams and leaves the rest of the construction breathable. If a tape lift appears at a stitched edge (typical after years of heavy use), repair with a small piece of seam-seal adhesive (Gear Aid Aquaseal + FD or similar) before it becomes a leak path. Don’t add additional tape to untaped seams — that defeats the breathability design.
Hood Helmet Compatibility
The climbing-helmet-compatible hood has a pre-tensioned elastic opening — the elastic sits snugly around the helmet brim without compressing the helmet padding or restricting vision. Test the fit with your specific climbing helmet before heading out. The rear cinch-cord with cord lock dials in a tighter fit for high-wind situations; loosen when the hood is off the helmet to prevent the elastic from deforming over time.
Stretch Fabric Care
The 7% elastane in the main body and 12% elastane in the targeted panels deliver four-way stretch, but elastane breaks down faster than nylon if exposed to high heat, chlorine, or harsh chemicals. Avoid hot tubs, chlorinated pools, and prolonged UV exposure. If the jacket loses its snap-back stretch, the elastane is likely degraded — common after 4–6 years of heavy alpine use.
Zippers & Bonded Cuffs
The water-resistant reverse-coil zippers throughout (CF + chest + alpine hand pockets) are the most failure-prone part of the jacket. Keep the coils clean (a soft brush works), lubricate sparingly with a silicone-based zipper lubricant (Nikwax, GE Silicone II, or beeswax) if they start sticking, and never force a stuck zipper — back it off and clear debris. The bonded cuffs can lose elasticity over years of use; don’t pull the jacket off by the cuffs (stresses the elastic seam) — pull from the body or unzip and shrug out.
Storage
Store clean, dry, and uncompressed in a cool, dark, dry place. Hang on a wide hanger or fold flat. Long-term compression (stuffed in a pack or gear bag for storage, not transport) breaks down the brushed interior of the 240 g/m² double weave and degrades the elastane stretch. Keep out of direct sunlight (UV degrades both the 93% recycled nylon face and the non-PFC DWR).
Soft Shell vs Hard Shell Awareness
The Chamlang is a soft shell — wind-resistant + highly breathable + four-way stretch, but NOT fully waterproof. Built for high-output alpine activity in cool/dry conditions, where breathability and mobility matter more than storm-grade waterproofing. For sustained heavy rain or wet-rail conditions, layer a fully seam-sealed hardshell (FUTURELIGHT™ or DryVent™) over the Chamlang. The two systems are designed to layer together for serious alpine objectives.
