Technology

Base Camp™
TNF's signature rugged gear line — designed to withstand abrasions, rough handling, and heavy use across years of travel and expedition use
Fully Welded Construction
Heat-welded seams (no stitching on the main body) for guaranteed waterproof performance
Cleaning
Wipe the 1000D recycled polyester exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. The Base Camp material is highly water- and abrasion-resistant and cleans easily. Don't use harsh solvents or bleach — these can degrade the TPU coating. The fully welded construction means there are no stitches to clean, only the bonded TPU laminate to wipe. Empty the internal secure-zip pocket before cleaning.
Drying
Air dry completely at room temperature with the main-compartment unzippered and standing upright (or hung from a duffel handle). Don't tumble dry, don't use a clothes dryer, and don't apply direct heat (hair dryers, radiators) — heat can damage the welded seams, warp the #10 main-compartment zipper slider, and degrade the TPU coating on the 1000D recycled polyester shell. Confirm both interior and exterior are fully dry before storage.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the main-compartment slightly open or unzippered. Long-term storage with the bag sealed traps residual moisture and can cause the TPU coating interior to develop mildew. Confirm the interior is clean and dry before storing.
Fully Welded Construction
The fully welded construction (heat-bonded seams, no stitching on the main body) is what gives this duffel its waterproof performance — water cannot enter through seam failures the way it can in stitched duffels. Don't attempt to sew repairs on the welded seams; if a seam fails, take the duffel to TNF for warranty repair. The welded seams are durable but can delaminate at sharp bends over time — store the duffel flat or hung, not folded sharply for long periods.
1000D Recycled Polyester with TPU Coating
The 1000D recycled polyester with TPU coating is the same abrasion-resistant face fabric used on the rugged Base Camp Duffel and Gear Box lines — built for hauling over gravel, sand, and rough surfaces. The TPU coating can be scratched by rough surfaces (rock, concrete, ice) — avoid dragging the duffel across rough surfaces for long periods; lift by the duffel handles or backpack straps instead. The TPU coating is water-resistant but will eventually lose water repellency; the TPU itself is waterproof, so DWR re-treatment is for surface water only.
#10 Main-Compartment Waterproof Zipper
The oversize #10 main-compartment zipper is the largest waterproof zipper available — its chunky teeth are designed for durability under heavy use. The zipper's water-resistant coating wears over time; if the zipper starts leaking through in heavy rain, apply a fresh waterproof zipper treatment (like Zip Tech or Nikwax) to restore full water resistance. Brush the teeth with a soft toothbrush and lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant if the slider stiffens. Never force the slider past its stops — the #10 zipper has significant mechanical force and forcing can bend the teeth.
Climbing-Inspired Locking Zipper Pulls
The climbing-inspired locking zipper pulls lock the slider in place to prevent it from drifting open during transport. The locking mechanism can collect grit, salt, and snow; rinse with fresh water periodically to prevent corrosion. If the lock stops engaging, the pull is replaceable through TNF repair service.
Removable Backpack Straps + Duffel Handles
The removable backpack straps let you carry the duffel hands-free when hauling to/from the trailhead. The straps clip onto daisy-chain anchor points on the duffel. Inspect the clip attachments before each use — fully confirm the clips latch before slinging the duffel onto your back. The duffel handles are reinforced for hauling in a single carry. Alternate between strap and handle carry to distribute wear on the attachment points.
Internal Secure-Zip Pocket
The internal secure-zip pocket keeps small essentials (wallet, passport, keys) accessible in transit. The zipper takes grit over time — brush with a soft toothbrush to clear debris. If the slider stiffens, lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant. Don't store the contents in the secure-zip pocket long-term while humid — moisture can collect in the closed pocket; air the pocket out periodically.
Daisy-Chain Webbing Lash Points
The daisy-chain webbing on the duffel offers lash points for lashing extra gear (jackets, helmets, sleeping pads) to the outside. Confirm webbing threads are intact before lashing heavy items. Don't lash items heavier than the duffel itself; the daisy-chain is built for light external carries only. The daisy-chain attachments are also the anchor points for the removable backpack straps.
Carry-On Compatibility
The 50L size fits as a carry-on for many airlines — but always check your specific airline's carry-on dimensions before flying, as the 20.9" x 12.8" x 11.4" dimensions may exceed smaller-airline carry-on limits. Pack weight inside the duffel also matters; some airlines have carry-on weight limits. Confirm both dimensions and weight with your airline before checking in for the flight.
Waterproof vs. Submersible
The Base Camp Waterproof Duffel is waterproof for rain, splashing, and brief immersion (welded seams + waterproof #10 zip + TPU-coated body). It is NOT a fully submersible dry bag — if fully submerged for long periods, water can enter through the #10 main-compartment zipper closure. For rafting, paddling, or prolonged water exposure, use a dedicated submersible dry bag inside this duffel for electronics and dry items.
Material Notes
Do not dry clean, bleach, iron, or use solvents on the 1000D recycled polyester with TPU coating. Keep the duffel away from open flames and high heat sources (campfires, hot car interiors, hot exhaust). The TPU coating can be scratched by sharp surfaces — handle with care when loading around ski edges, crampons, and ice tools. The 1000D material is durable but not puncture-proof; clip any snags with sharp scissors to prevent runs.
