Ember Down Quilt
Ember Down Quilt
Ultralight Down Quilt · RDS 850+ Fill Goose Down · Non-PFAS Ultra-Dry · QuiltLock System · 2 Temp Ratings × 2 Lengths

Insulated with RDS-certified, 850+ fillpower goose down with a non-PFAS Ultra-Dry Down treatment, the Ember quilt was designed for multi-season use with an excellent warmth to weight ratio. In warmer conditions, the ability to easily ventilate keeps you comfortable. As temperatures drop, the drawcord footbox helps you retain warmth and the light, breathable 10D shell fabric is treated with a non-PFAS DWR finish to repel moisture, while the 10D liner fabric is there to deliver pure comfort. The Ember is easy to secure to your sleeping mat with the attached straps or add it to your Sea to Summit sleeping bag using the integrated QuiltLock system for a thermal boost in colder weather.

Variant Comparison (2 Temp Ratings × 2 Lengths)
850+ Fillpower Goose Down (PREMIUM LOFT)
The Ember Quilt uses 850+ fillpower goose down — premium loft: What "fillpower" measures: - Cubic inches one ounce of down lofts up to - 850+ = extremely high loft (only premium goose down reaches this) - Standard down is 600-700 fillpower - 800+ is the high-end benchmark - 850+ is reserved for serious premium products Why 850+ matters: - More loft per ounce = more warmth per gram - 850+ down traps more insulating air - Lighter weight for equivalent warmth - Lofts higher, fluffier feel RDS (Responsible Down Standard): - Third-party audited down sourcing - Animal welfare verified - Traceable supply chain - Industry-standard ethical certification Fill ratio: - 90/10 goose down (90% down clusters, 10% feathers) - High down % = more loft per ounce - Industry standard for premium down Ultra-Dry Down treatment (NON-PFAS): - Hydrophobic coating on individual down clusters - Down resists moisture absorption - Stays lofted when slightly damp - Per STS: "stays drier in damp conditions" - Non-PFAS = no forever-chemical concerns
Non-PFAS Premium Materials
The Ember uses four sustainability/quality certifications: 1. RDS Down (Responsible Down Standard): - Ethical sourcing of goose down - Animal welfare verified - Third-party audited 2. Bluesign® Approved Materials: - Chemical safety verified throughout production - Reduced environmental impact - Worker safety standards - Industry-leading textile certification 3. Recycled 10D Nylon Shell: - 10 denier = ultra-lightweight - Recycled content reduces new plastic - Non-PFAS DWR finish (no forever-chemical water repellent) - Repels light moisture + campground condensation 4. 10D Nylon Liner: - Lightweight inner fabric - "Pure comfort" feel per STS - Adds minimal weight Why all four together: - Premium + sustainable positioning - STS's most ethical down product line - Matches the request from conscious consumers
QuiltLock System (STS-PATENTED ATTACHMENT)
The Ember uses QuiltLock — STS's patented attachment system: What QuiltLock does: - Press studs on the sides of the quilt - Snap to the loops on a corresponding STS sleeping bag - Creates a single connected sleep system - Adds 5-15°F of warmth to the sleeping bag (depending on quilt temp rating) Use cases: - Add the 45°F QuiltLock to a 30°F sleeping bag = ~15°F boost - Add the 30°F QuiltLock to a 30°F sleeping bag = ~25°F boost - Modular warmth management Alternative use (per STS FAQ): - "The press studs on the side (usually used for sleeping mat attachment straps) can couple two Embers together" - Stack two Embers for ultra-cold conditions - Couples to itself as well as to sleeping bags Practical value: - Versatility — extend the warmth range of any compatible gear - Cost-effective compared to buying two separate products - STS proprietary system
Drawcord Footbox (NEW VS QUILTS WITHOUT)
Per STS, the Ember has a "drawcord footbox" — a closing mechanism at the foot end: What it does: - Cinch the foot opening closed - Traps warm air at the feet - Hoodless quilts otherwise let heat escape at the foot - Critical for actual warmth (the foot box is the main insulation weak point) How to use: - Cinch the drawcord snugly - Stops the quilt from sliding off the feet - Creates an enclosed foot chamber Cold-weather use (per STS FAQ): - "With the footbox drawcord cinched tightly, a sleeping mat with an R-Value of 3+ (and ideally a Reactor liner) you can get close to the freezing point" - Footbox = significant thermal boost Versus quilts WITHOUT footbox (true minimalist quilts): - Those let feet vent + extend warm - The Ember's footbox = smarter thermal management - Choose between venting (warm nights) and sealing (cold nights)
Quilt vs Sleeping Bag (Important Difference)
Quilts are fundamentally different from sleeping bags: Sleeping bag (mummy): - Full enclosure with hood - Insulation on the back side too - Heavy for warmth - Maximum warmth-to-weight Quilt (like Ember): - No hood (uses a hat instead) - No insulation on the back (rely on sleeping mat below for under-insulation) - Lighter (less material) - Better temperature regulation in warmth (vents easily) - More versatile (use alone, use with sleeping bag, etc.) Why quilts are popular: - Lighter than equivalent-warmth sleeping bags - Less constraining (open like a blanket) - Easier to ventilate (kick a leg out, push it aside) - Pack smaller Why quilts require a hat: - No hood = head loses heat fast - "Quilts do not have hoods, so make sure to wear an insulating hat" per STS FAQ - Bring a warm hat or balaclava Why quilts require a good sleeping mat: - The back is exposed to the cold ground via the mat - Mat's R-Value is critical (R-Value 3+ recommended for real backpacking use per STS FAQ) - Cold sleeper + cold mat = cold night despite warm quilt For cold weather (per STS FAQ): - Cinch footbox tight - Use a sleeping mat with R-Value 3+ - Add a Reactor liner for added warmth - Wear an insulating hat - Can reach "close to freezing point" with these measures
Quilt Construction Details
Shell: - 10D recycled nylon - Non-PFAS DWR finish - Lightweight - Breathable (allows moisture vapor to escape) Liner: - 10D nylon - Smooth against skin - "Pure comfort" feel per STS Construction: - Baffles hold the down in place (prevents clumping) - Differential cut (shell slightly larger than liner for proper loft) - Stitched-through design (lighter than baffled, slightly colder) - 90/10 goose down fill Stuff sack: - 100% nylon - Standard compression - 3-6.3 L compressed volume (very packable) Drawcord footbox: - Cinch cord for sealing the foot - Lightweight closure
Award-Worthy Sleeping Bag Line
The Ember Down Quilt is positioned as STS's premium quilt line for multi-season ultralight backpacking. Why it stands out: - 850+ fillpower is rare (only the best products) - RDS + Bluesign + Recycled = most ethical positioning - QuiltLock system = proprietary versatility - 2 temp ratings cover most backpacker needs Comparison to other STS quilt lines (if any): - Spark: warmer options / synthetic - Ember: this premium down line

Down Quilt Care — Storage is Critical
Down quilts have two care modes — active use washing and long-term storage: Storage between trips: - Store UNCOMPRESSED (loose in a closet or large bag) - Compression for hours = lossy for the down - The down clusters compress over time - Repeated long-term compression = permanent loft loss Why this matters: - A quilt stored rolled for 6 months may lose 20% of its warmth - Always store loose between trips - Only compress for transport (hours/days) Practical storage: - Hang in a closet - Or store in a large cotton bag - Or fold loosely in a bin - Keep dry (humidity + down = clumping + mildew risk)
Washing (Less Frequent Than You Think)
Down quilts don't need frequent washing. Air out after each trip and wash only when visibly dirty or smelly: Washing steps: 1. Use a front-loading washing machine (top-loaders can damage baffles) 2. Specialist down wash (Nikwax Down Wash is the standard) 3. Cold water, gentle cycle 4. Tumble dry on low heat with tennis balls or dryer balls (breaks up clumps) 5. Multiple dry cycles — down takes HOURS to fully dry 6. Fully dry = essential before storing (wet down = mildew + clumping) Common mistakes: - Regular detergent (leaves residue that hurts loft) - Top-loading washer (agitator damages baffles) - High heat drying (damages down + fabric) - Incomplete drying (mildew risk) - Storing compressed while still slightly damp
Ultra-Dry Down Treatment Care
The non-PFAS Ultra-Dry Down treatment is permanent — it doesn't wash out: What this means: - Drying performance maintained over years - No re-treatment needed - The non-PFAS coating is bonded at the cluster level - Washes won't strip the treatment (per STS) Care for the treatment: - Avoid harsh chemicals (bleach, fabric softeners) - Standard down wash is fine - Air drying is OK but takes longer - Tumble dry with balls restores loft If treatment degrades (after years): - Treatment is rated for the product lifetime - Down still works (just gets wet faster) - No user-fixable re-treatment available
Shell + Liner Fabric Care
10D Nylon shell: - Ultra-thin — handle with care - Avoid abrasion against rough surfaces - Tears are repairable with repair tape (similar to tent repair) - DWR finish needs occasional refresh (use a non-PFAS re-DWR wash-in product if desired) 10D Nylon liner: - Comfortable against skin - Hand-washable for spot cleaning - Anti-bacterial properties minimal — air dry fully between uses General care: - Don't dry clean (chemicals damage DWR) - Don't iron (heat damages nylon + DWR) - Don't bleach
QuiltLock Care (NEW)
The QuiltLock press studs are the connection points: Care: - Keep the studs clean (occasional wipe with damp cloth) - Check periodically for corrosion - Align carefully when connecting to avoid wear When coupling Embers (FAQ): - "The press studs on the side (usually used for sleeping mat attachment straps) can couple two Embers together" - Align both quilts' studs - Press firmly to engage Avoid: - Pulling quilts apart by force (breaks the press studs over time) - Storing with the studs engaged unnecessarily - Getting the studs wet (can corrode)
Drawcord Footbox Care
The drawcord cinches the footbox: Use: - Cinch snugly for cold nights - Open fully for warm nights (full ventilation) Care: - Don't cinch so tight it strains the fabric - Don't dry with the cinch pulled (damages drawcord tension over time) - Replace if the drawcord fails (user-serviceable with a replacement cord) Stuff sack packing: - Loosen the drawcord before stuffing - Pressure on cinched drawcord during compressed storage = loss of tension
Avoid These Failure Modes
Don't: - Store rolled in the stuff sack long-term (compresses the down) - Wash with regular detergent (residue reduces loft) - Wash in a top-loading washer with agitator (damages baffles) - Dry on high heat (damages down + fabric) - Store even slightly damp (mildew risk) - Use compressed for days/weeks at a time (permanent loft loss) - Iron (heat damage) - Bleach (degrades fabric + treatment) - Dry clean (chemicals damage DWR) Repair: - Small tears: apply nylon repair tape (Tenacious Tape is the standard) - Larger tears: send to STS for warranty evaluation - Baffle shifts: small down clumps can be redistributed by hand - Major down shift: send for repair (STS supports this)
Sustainability & End-of-Life
Premium down has long life: - 10+ years with proper care - Down quality doesn't degrade over time (with care) - RDS + Bluesign + Recycled = sustainable sourcing - Repairable for extending life At end-of-life: - Down can be re-processed by specialty recyclers - Nylon can be recycled in some regions - Or donate if still functional Why this is greener than you think: - A decade of use per quilt = low annual footprint - Replacing tents + bags every 5 years has worse footprint - Repair culture extends life further Warranty: - STS offers warranty on stitching + materials - Contact STS for tears + baffle shifts - Keep your proof of purchase
Activity-Specific Tips
- Backpacking (45°F version): 3-season use. Pack in compression sack. Cinch footbox when needed. Add QuiltLock to sleeping bag for cold nights. - Multi-season / bikepacking: Compresses to small enough for handlebar bag or saddlebag. - Shoulder-season camping (30°F version): Pair with Reactor liner + R-Value 3+ mat + hat for cold nights. - Frontcountry camping: Use uncompressed for loft + comfort. Don't compress for hours. - Travel: Compresses for luggage. Use with hostels + hotels for warmth. - Bivy camping: Pairs with waterproof bivy for storm protection. - NOT for: Hammock sleeping (need under-quilt for bottom insulation). Sub-freezing winter (use proper sleeping bag). - Hut / refugio use: Plenty of warmth + comfort. Best ultralight option for hut trips.
