10 in Fry Pan
Generous 26 cm cooking surface for 2-4 person meals. Family-sized frying surface.
3-Ply Base
SS + Aluminum + SS sandwich — even heat across full pan surface, no hot spots.
Click Safe Handle
Single handle locks on for cooking, reverses for compact stowing.
Induction Capable
Works on gas, electric, AND many induction cooktops.
99% Stainless
Almost entirely 304 SS — most metal-heavy product in the Detour line. Built to last decades.
5L Pot Nests Inside
Designed so the 5L Detour Pot fits inside the pan for ultimate space-efficient storage.
99% 304 Stainless Steel (MOST METAL-HEAVY IN DETOUR LINE)
The Detour Pan has the highest stainless steel content of any Detour Stainless Steel product:
Material Split:
- 99% 304 Stainless Steel (the body, base, sidewalls)
- 0.8% Aluminum (the middle layer of the 3-ply base)
- 0.2% Nylon (the Click Safe click mechanism)
Why 99% SS (vs the rest of Detour line):
- The rest of Detour products use 77-89% SS (with significant silicone %)
- The Pan is essentially solid stainless steel because:
- Sidewalls don't need to collapse (unlike Pot sidewalls)
- No soft elements needed (no silicone hinge)
- Cookware needs to be rigid and conductive for frying
- Maximum thermal mass for stable cooking temperatures
Why this matters:
- Heats evenly (stainless distributes heat across the surface)
- Doesn't retain flavors (no plastic elements)
- Withstands high heat (frying needs higher temps than boiling)
- Lasts decades with proper care
- More rigid feel than the collapsible products
Three-Ply Base — Same Engineering as Pots
Per STS: "the three-ply base - a layer of aluminium sandwiched between two layers of stainless steel - ensures even heat distribution for perfect temperature control while you cook."
Same 3-ply construction as the 3L/5L Pots:
- Outer bottom = Stainless steel (contact with stove)
- Middle = Aluminum core (heat-spreading layer)
- Inner top = Stainless steel (contact with food)
Why 3-ply is critical for a pan:
- Frying requires precise temperature control
- Hot spots burn food on one side and leave it raw on the other
- The aluminum core spreads heat across the entire 10" surface
- "Perfect temperature control" per STS
What this enables:
- Pancakes cook evenly across the surface
- Eggs don't stick in one spot more than another
- Meat sears consistently from edge to edge
- Stir-fry vegetables get the same heat
- Lower burner settings still work (heat distributes evenly)
10" Pan / 26 cm Cooking Surface
10" / 26 cm diameter is a generous fry pan size — covers most family cooking needs.
Cooking capacity:
- 4 eggs at once (full breakfast)
- 2 chicken breasts side by side
- 4 pancakes
- Stir-fry for 2-3 people
- Single-layer vegetables, fish fillets, etc.
Compared to sizes:
- 8" pan: smaller, less cooking surface, lighter
- 10" pan (this): medium-large, generous for 2-4 people
- 12" pan: huge, harder to maneuver, more weight
- 10" is the sweet spot for most camp cooking
Packed dimensions:
- Open: 39.8 × 26.1 × 5.1 cm / 16 × 10 × 2 in
- Packed (handle reversed): 27.1 × 26.1 × 5.1 cm / 11 × 10 × 2 in
- The handle reversal saves ~12 cm of length (13 inches → 11 inches)
Sidewall height:
- 5.1 cm / 2 in walls = good for sautéing vegetables with stirring room
- Not deep enough to deep-fry or simmer (use the Pot for that)
- Pan + Pot together = complete 2-person cooking system
Click Safe Handle (Single, Like the Pouring Pot)
The pan uses a single Click Safe handle — same engineering as the Pouring Pot (A1211), vs the dual handles on the 3L/5L Pots.
Why single handle?
- Pans need only one grip point (you tilt with one hand)
- Lighter than dual-handle pots (less metal)
- Lighter overall product (~917 g vs 1.1 kg for the 3L Pot)
3-position mechanism:
1. Locked-on (cooking position) — handle clicks onto rivet point, secure for frying/sautéing
2. Reversed (stowed position) — handle flips to the underside of the pan, reducing overall length
3. Detached (cleaning position) — handle fully releases for thorough cleaning
"Reversed when stowing the pan":
- Flipping the handle to the underside reduces packed length from 16" to 11" (saves 5 inches)
- The handle then nests inside or below the pan profile
- Critical for tight storage
Material: Glass-reinforced nylon + hard anodized aluminum attachment
Cross-product compatibility:
- Click-Safe handles work with other Detour pots (3L/5L, Pouring Pot) per FAQ
- Same handle engineering across the cookware line
Polished Stainless Steel Surface (NOT Non-Stick)
Per STS FAQ: "Does the Detour frying pan have a non-stick finish? No - the surface is polished stainless steel."
This is critical for cooking technique:
- Stainless steel cooks differently than non-stick
- Requires more oil than a non-stick pan
- Requires lower heat than a non-stick pan
- Has the fond (browned bits) — actually a benefit for sauces
Cooking techniques with SS pan:
1. Preheat the pan before adding oil (helps with fond development)
2. Add oil AFTER preheating (oil heats up across the surface)
3. Use enough oil — SS is not sticky-resistant
4. Lower temperatures than non-stick (no need for very high heat)
5. Don't move food too quickly — let it develop a crust/sear
6. Deglaze with wine or stock to capture the fond = pan sauces
Why polished SS (vs brushed or coated):
- Easier to clean than brushed (smoother surface)
- More durable than coated (no coating to scratch or peel)
- Develops fond better than coated (more surface contact)
- Aesthetic: looks like professional kitchen equipment
Seasoning (optional):
- Some users season SS pans (similar to cast iron)
- Heat oil in the pan, let it polymerize, creates a non-stick layer
- Improves over time with use
- Not required — STS ships unseasoned
5L Pot Nests Inside — Space-Efficient Storage
Per STS: "Sized so the 5L Detour Collapsible Pot will fit inside the pan for space-efficient storage."
The brilliant nesting design:
- The 5L Pot (collapsed: 27 × 24.7 × 6.9 cm) fits inside the pan's 27.1 × 26.1 × 5.1 cm interior
- Both items together take up roughly the space of just the pan
- This is part of the design system — multiple products work together
Why this works:
- The 5L Pot's dimensions (27 × 24.7 × 6.9 cm) are slightly smaller than the Pan's interior (27.1 × 26.1 × 5.1 cm)
- The Pan sidewalls are 5.1 cm tall, just barely containing the collapsed 6.9 cm Pot — but the Pot can sit tilted inside
- Or the Pot fits sideways with the lid attached
Practical packing for couples cookware:
- Pan (base) + 5L Pot collapsed (inside) + Click Safe lid
- Total packed space = the pan's space only
- Plus the Bowls and Mugs from the 5-Piece Cook Set nest in the 5L Pot
The complete Detour couples kitchen stacks like Russian dolls:
1. Pan (outermost — 27.1 × 26.1 × 5.1 cm)
2. 5L Pot inside (or 3L Pot for smaller)
3. Bowls and Mugs inside the pot
4. Click Safe handles lock everything
Result: A complete couples kitchen in a single stack the size of a single 11" × 10" package
Award-Winning Cookware System
The Detour Pan joins the rest of the Detour Stainless Steel line as Award Winning.
What makes the Pan special:
- Most metal-heavy Detour product (99% SS) — built for serious cooking
- Single Click Safe handle (vs dual on Pots) — lighter, purpose-built for frying
- 5L Pot nests inside — clever storage engineering
- Polished SS surface (no non-stick coating) — honest, durable cooking
- Induction compatible — versatile for any stove

Dishwasher Use (FAQ-DISCLOSED)
Per STS FAQ: "No - the pan handle attachment point is hard anodized and is not dishwasher safe."
Same caveat as the Pots:
- Click Safe handle attachment rivets are hard anodized
- Alkaline dishwasher detergent strips the anodized layer
- Practical solution: detach the Click Safe handle before dishwashing the pan
Practical approach:
1. Press release button on the handle
2. Slide handle off the attachment rivet
3. Load pan body into dishwasher normally
4. Hand-wash the handle separately
Hand-washing the pan (best practice):
- Pre-rinse while still warm (not scalding)
- Mild soap + sponge
- Polish with soft cloth
- The polished SS surface cleans easily with proper technique
Polished Stainless Steel Surface Care
The polished SS surface requires specific care to maintain its finish:
Daily cleaning:
- Pre-rinse with warm water (don't shock a hot pan with cold water — can warp)
- Mild dish soap
- Soft sponge or cloth (non-abrasive)
- Rinse thoroughly
- Dry immediately to prevent water spots
Stuck food removal:
- For stubborn bits: deglaze with a little water or stock while pan is still warm
- Use a wooden spatula or plastic scrubber
- Avoid steel wool (scratches polished surface)
- Avoid metal scouring pads
Stain removal:
- Bar Keepers Friend for tough spots
- Baking soda + warm water paste
- For rainbow heat tint: vinegar + water
Restore shine:
- Polish with soft cloth
- Stainless cleaner for refresh
- Club soda for quick shine (yes, really)
Avoid:
- Steel wool (scratches)
- Bleach (pits surface)
- High heat dry burn (without food/liquid) — damages 3-ply base
- Thermal shock (cold water on hot pan)
Cooking Techniques for Stainless Steel Pan
Stainless steel cooks differently than non-stick. Here's how to master it:
The "Leidenfrost Test":
1. Preheat the pan over medium heat
2. Sprinkle a few drops of water
3. If they dance and skate across the surface → pan is ready
4. If they evaporate immediately → too hot
5. If they sit and bubble → not hot enough
Searing meat:
- Preheat pan (Leidenfrost)
- Add oil after preheating
- Place meat on the pan — DON'T move it
- Wait 3-4 min until it releases naturally
- Flip once, repeat
- Result: perfect Maillard browning + fond for sauce
Eggs without sticking:
- Preheat pan
- Add butter or oil
- Pour eggs in
- Wait until edges set, then lift with spatula
- Or scramble gently (the fond develops but doesn't stick)
Pancakes:
- Medium-low heat (SS doesn't need high heat)
- Light oil or butter
- Ladle batter
- Wait for bubbles to form, flip once
Stainless steel fond (the magic):
- After cooking, add liquid (wine, stock, water)
- Scrape with wooden spoon — fond lifts
- Reduces to pan sauce
- This is what makes SS superior to non-stick for many dishes
Three-Ply Base Care
Same as the 3L/5L Pots:
Don't:
- Heat the empty pan (damages aluminum layer, can scorch)
- Bang on hard surfaces (can dent layers)
- Thermal shock (cold water on hot pan — warp risk)
- Use metal scouring pads (scratches SS)
Do:
- Always preheat with food/oil inside
- Allow to cool before washing
- Clean with non-abrosive sponge
- Store dry
Heat tinting (cosmetic):
- Blue/gold tints from heat exposure
- Normal for SS cookware
- Remove with stainless cleaner or vinegar
- Aesthetic only, doesn't affect function
Click Safe Handle & Lock
Handle attachment:
- Single Click Safe handle
- Snap onto rivet point on the pan
- Should click into locked position
- Test by gently pulling before each use
Reversing for storage:
- Flip the handle to the underside
- Reduces packed length from 16" to 11"
- Critical for tight storage
Cleaning the handle attachment point:
- Wipe with damp cloth after each use
- Don't submerge in water
- Keep hard anodized layer intact
Avoid:
- Forcing handle into wrong positions
- Using handle as a pry bar
- Hammering into place
- Carrying pan by one handle only (acceptable for this single-handle pan)
Cross-product compatibility:
- Click Safe handles work with other Detour pots per FAQ
- Same handle engineering across cookware line
Avoid These Failure Modes
Don't:
- Microwave the pan (metal = sparks)
- Heat the empty pan (damages 3-ply layers)
- Thermal shock (cold water on hot pan — warp risk)
- Dishwash the Click Safe handle (anodized layer strips)
- Use metal scouring pads on polished SS
- Bang on hard surfaces (can dent layers)
- Bang the handle (can crack the GR nylon)
If dropped:
- Check 3-ply base for dents (dents affect heat distribution)
- Check Click Safe handle attachment
- Test pan for warping (place on flat surface — should sit flat)
- Minor dents in body don't affect function
Sustainability & End-of-Life
304 Stainless Steel is highly recyclable:
- 99% of the pan is SS — high scrap value
- Most recyclers accept
- Recyclable indefinitely
Aluminum + Nylon:
- Aluminum layer is recyclable (small %)
- Nylon in handle mechanism: small, specialty recyclers
Longevity:
- Cast/formed SS pans last decades
- No coating to wear off (vs non-stick pans that need replacing every 5-10 years)
- Click Safe handles may need eventual replacement
- This pan is built to last a lifetime of use
At end-of-life:
- Recycle SS at scrap metal (high value)
- Detach Click Safe handle if separate
- Other materials to specialty recyclers or landfill
