Technology

FUTURELIGHT™
TNF's nanospun waterproof breathable membrane — fully seam-sealed for guaranteed waterproof performance
Spectra® Ripstop
Ultra-high-strength polyethylene ripstop reinforcement at the palm and mitt-tip — 15x stronger than steel by weight, highly abrasion-resistant
Summit Series™ AMK
TNF's Advanced Mountain Kit pinnacle line — engineered with unparalleled precision for the world's best alpine athletes for unforgiving conditions
Cleaning
Hand-wash in cool water with a mild technical detergent — do not machine wash. Machine agitation can damage the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane, displace the seam tape, and stress the Spectra® ripstop reinforcement. Use a soft brush to clean the silicone gripper dots. Wear the overmitts separately from any inner glove/mitt during cleaning — the long gauntlet + encased-elastic cuff is designed to fit over inner gloves, but cleaning them together traps moisture.
Drying
Air dry completely at room temperature with the gauntlet open and turned inside-out if possible. Stuff the mitt tips with paper towels to hold the shape and absorb interior moisture. Never tumble dry, never use a hair dryer or radiator, and never expose to high heat — heat damages the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane, lifts the seam-seal tape, and can shrink or distort the encased-elastic cuff.
FUTURELIGHT™ Membrane
The FUTURELIGHT™ membrane is the waterproof core — never dry-clean or use solvents, which destroy the membrane. If water soaks through after years of extreme alpine use, the membrane is no longer trustworthy and the overmitts should be replaced or sent to TNF for repair service under the limited lifetime guarantee.
Spectra® Ripstop Durability
The Spectra® ripstop at the palm and mitt tip is ultra-high-strength polyethylene — 15x stronger than steel by weight, with exceptional cut and abrasion resistance. Despite its strength, spectra can be cut by sharp edges (ski edges, crampon points, ice tools). Inspect the Spectra® ripstop after ice-climbing or technical mountaineering days; if a section is cut, send to TNF repair before next use.
Long Gauntlet + Encased-Elastic Cuff
The long gauntlet is designed to fit over both the inner glove/mitt and the alpine jacket cuff. The encased-elastic cuff can be worn over or under the jacket sleeve depending on conditions — over for snow seal, under for ventilation. Confirm the elastic is fully seated before each outing; if the elastic loses snap-back after heavy use, replacement is through TNF repair service.
Silicone Gripper Dots
The silicone gripper dot print on the palm and thumb gives a secure grip on ice tools, ski poles, and ropes. Harsh solvents and abrasive cleaners degrade the silicone — wash with mild soap and a soft cloth only. Over time the gripper dots wear down; this is normal wear, not a defect, but when the grip becomes insufficient consider replacing the overmitts.
Layering Use (Over Inner Glove/Mitt)
The overmitts are designed to wear over another warm glove or mitt — typically the Summit AMK Down Mitt. Don't wear them alone in cold conditions; they have minimal insulation (the FUTURELIGHT™ is waterproof-breathable, not a thermal insulator). The whole point is to layer over an insulating inner glove/mitt for warmth + an outer shell for wet protection.
Carabiner Loop & Wrist Leash
The carabiner loop on the back of the pinkie lets you clip the overmitts to a harness or pack. The removable wrist leash prevents drops when you take the overmitts off mid-climb. Don't carry the overmitts by the wrist leash alone for extended periods; use the carabiner loop or pack them in a dry bag. Inspect the wrist leash attachment point periodically.
Cuff Pull
The cuff pull gives leverage for pulling the overmitts on/off over inner gloves. The pull tab can fatigue over years of heavy use — replace if it tears off. Don't yank the overmitts on by the cuff pull alone; work the hand in deliberately to avoid stressing the gauntlet seam.
Heat Transfer Logo
The heat transfer logo is bonded into the fabric — wash inside out to protect it from abrasion. Don't iron directly on the transfer; iron on the reverse side at low-medium heat only. Harsh detergents and high heat can cause the transfer to peel. Clip any lifted edges with sharp scissors to prevent further peeling.
DWR Maintenance
The futurelight membrane itself doesn't rely on DWR for waterproofing (the seams are sealed and the membrane is waterproof), but the face fabric of both the FUTURELIGHT™ back-of-hand/cuff zone and the Spectra® ripstop palm zone can benefit from periodic DWR refresh when water stops beading on the surface. Apply a PFC-free DWR spray rated for nylon ripstop and let cure.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the gauntlet open and the wrist leash fastened. UV exposure degrades the FUTURELIGHT™ membrane and the Spectra® ripstop over time. Don't store the overmitts compressed long-term under heavy gear — the encased-elastic cuff loses rebound when crushed. Confirm fully dry before storage to prevent mildew in any moisture from wet inner gloves that may have transferred.
