Men's Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Hoodie

Get the comfort and warmth of our warmest-weight base layer in a pullover with our new Men’s Merino 250 Base Layer Hoodie. Featuring a mountain-inspired pattern and a higher neck on the hood for more coverage when worn down, this 100% Merino wool hoodie makes it easy to get inspired and feel prepared to brave the cold weather for your next adventure.

Merino 250 Warmth — Pullover Form
The Classic Thermal Merino 250 Hoodie delivers the same warmth as the award-winning 250g/m² base layer crew in a pullover silhouette with a hood. Midweight 250 hits the sweet spot between insulation and breathability for cold-weather starts and stops — the temperature where most winter days actually live.
100% Merino Wool Fabric
Single-jersey knit of 100% Merino wool delivers moisture management, body-temperature regulation, and natural odor resistance. Interlock construction keeps the next-to-skin layer soft against the body. The 250g/m² weight class is the warmest base layer in the Smartwool lineup — deep-winter warmth without the bulk of a mid-layer.
Slim Base-Layer Fit
Our slim fit is intended to follow the contours of the body without excess bulk. The hoodie layers cleanly under an insulated jacket, vest, or shell; the cut follows the body so the hood stays in place when worn up and the hem stays tucked under a pack’s hip-belt.
Shoulder Panels Eliminate Top Shoulder Seams
Re-engineered shoulder panels remove the traditional top-of-shoulder seam entirely. The result: no seam line for a pack strap, harness, or bib to rub against during long days on snow or trail. The shoulder panels also reinforce the high-wear zone where packs and shells stress the fabric most.
Higher Neck On Hood
The hood sits with a higher neck than a standard pullover hoodie, providing extra neck coverage and warmth when worn down. The taller collar seals the throat gap that crew base layers leave open — the difference between a base layer and a base layer + neck gaiter on a bitter-cold belay.
Flatlock Seam Construction
Flatlock seams throughout sit flat against skin to minimize chafing under layers, packs, and harnesses. Combined with the shoulder panels and the higher-neck hood, the Classic Thermal Hoodie is built for cold-weather days where chafe points and seam rub end sessions early.
Multi-Activity Versatility
Engineered for skiing, hiking, climbing, and cold-weather biking. The temperature-regulating properties of Merino keep you comfortable across output levels without swapping layers; the odor resistance means multi-day trips and travel without packing a fresh base layer for every day.

Washing
Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle with like colors. Use a mild detergent — avoid fabric softeners and bleach, which coat the Merino fibers and reduce moisture-wicking and odor-resistance performance. Turn the hoodie inside out before washing to protect the shoulder panels from surface abrasion.
Drying
Tumble dry low. High heat can shrink Merino wool fibers and warp the hood construction over time. For longest life, lay flat to dry when possible — air-dried Merino retains its shape and loft through more wear cycles, and the higher-neck hood keeps its structure.
Ironing & Decoration
Cool iron as needed. Do not iron decoration. Printed graphics, heat-transfer logos, and color-block panels can scorch or peel under direct high heat — use a press cloth if ironing is necessary.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino wool, leaving fibers brittle and reducing the temperature-regulating properties that make the fabric perform.
Storage
Store folded in a dry, breathable space. Merino’s natural odor resistance means you can wear it multiple times between washes — a key performance feature that makes it ideal for multi-day trips, travel, and recovery days at home.

Merino Layer System — SW016359

Built For

Cold-Weather Hiking
20° – 40°F
Layer under a shell for ridge traverses and shoulder-season trails where the wind cuts at the throat. The higher-neck hood seals the neck gap that a crew leaves open; the shoulder panels sit clean under pack straps without the rub a top-of-shoulder seam creates on long climbs.
Skiing & Snowboarding
5° – 25°F
Lift-served and backcountry days where the hood replaces the need for a separate neck gaiter or beanie on the lift line. Midweight 250 stays warm on the chair and the boot-pack; the hoodie pulls on solo for the après-ski without swapping layers at the car.
Ice Climbing & Belay
Below 15°F
Static hanging belays where the hood seals in core warmth without restricting peripheral vision. Midweight 250 holds warmth during the long minutes between pitches; the shoulder panels keep the harness’ shoulder straps from riding on a seam line.
Daily Winter Wear
10° – 35°F
The morning commute, the dog walk, the shop. Midweight 250 keeps the cold off on the walk to the car; the hood replaces the need for a separate beanie under the hard hat on the jobsite or the helmet on the bike. Merino’s odor resistance means multi-day wear between washes.
Complete The System

Pair It With The Bottom

The Men’s Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer Bottom matches weight, fit, and fabric so your upper and lower layers regulate as one system — no hot torso, cold legs. The hoodie’s higher-neck hood covers the throat; the bottom covers the legs; Merino handles the rest.

  • Same 250g/m² midweight matched warmth
  • 100% Merino wool identical fabric feel
  • Slim base-layer fit won’t bunch under bibs
  • Flatlock seams no chafe under packs
Add A Shell

Top It With A Windshell

For full output in real weather, layer a lightweight windshell or hardshell over the hoodie. Merino manages moisture from the inside; the shell blocks wind and precip from the outside. The hoodie’s higher-neck hood fills the throat gap that a crew leaves open under a shell collar.

  • Windshell cuts chill on exposed ridges
  • Insulated jacket deep-cold static days
  • Ski/snowboard shell full weather protection
  • Smartloft vest core warmth, free arms

Prepared with intention.

Every product is carefully inspected and handled by our team before it ships. From fit and function to final details, we make sure each piece is ready for the outdoors ahead—so you can focus on the experience, not the gear.
