Men's Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer Crew

Spring skiing or summer camping? The year-round Men's Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer Long Sleeve is game for either. With our Core Spun technology, we've wrapped lightweight Merino around a nylon core for added durability, while still keeping the comfort of ultra-soft, responsibly sourced Merino next to skin. We added smooth flatlock seams to help minimize chafing and offset shoulder and side seams to lie smoothly beneath pack straps. No matter the season or the activity, this base layer is made for it.

Core Spun Technology — Merino Wrapped Nylon Core
Our lightweight Merino jersey fabric uses a recycled nylon core while still keeping 100% Merino wool next to skin. Core Spun technology wraps the Merino fiber around a recycled nylon core rather than blending the two — the result is a fabric that has the durability and shape retention of a nylon-core yarn with the soft, moisture-managing, odor-resistant hand-feel of pure Merino against the skin. The nylon core extends the fabric's lifespan past what a 100% Merino jersey would survive; the Merino wrap delivers the natural temperature regulation and odor resistance that pure synthetic can't match.
Lightweight — Year-Round Versatility
All-Season positions this crew as the right weight for spring skiing, summer camping, fall trail running, and shoulder-season hiking — not deep cold, not high summer. Lighter than the Classic Thermal 250g/m² heavyweight, lighter than the Intraknit Thermal Merino Sport heavyweight. The right weight when a heavier crew would overheat on a spring skin-track or a summer backpacking climb, and the right weight when a pure synthetic would develop the clammy chill a Merino next-to-skin avoids.
Slim Fit For Layering Or Solo Wear
Our slim fit is intended to follow the contours of the body without excess bulk. Engineered in men's proportions — broader through the shoulder and chest, with a sleeve length that reaches the wrist without bunching. Layers cleanly under a fleece, a mid-insulation piece, or a shell for shoulder-season cold; wears cleanly on its own for spring skiing, summer camping, and shoulder-season hiking without the boxy cut a unisex fit would create.
Flatlock Seam Construction
Flatlock seam construction helps minimize chafing — the seams are sewn flat rather than raised, so they don't dig into the skin or create friction hot spots under a pack strap, a harness, or a mid-layer. The flatlock construction matters most on a base layer that gets worn day after day across long backpacking trips and multi-day tours where chafing would end the trip.
Offset Shoulder & Side Seams
Offset shoulder and side seams are designed to help increase comfort and minimize chafing and to lie smoothly beneath pack straps. The shoulder seams are placed forward of the natural shoulder line so a pack's shoulder strap doesn't sit directly on the seam line; the side seams wrap to the front so a pack's hip belt and a harness's leg straps don't sit on a side seam. The result is a base layer that doesn't develop hot spots under load.
Merino Moisture & Odor Management
100% Merino wool next to skin delivers natural sweat management, odor-resistance, and temperature regulation — the natural Merino fiber pulls moisture vapor away from the skin before it becomes sweat, resists odor-causing bacteria across multi-day trips, and regulates body temperature across the wide range of conditions a year-round base layer sees. The lightweight jersey knit breathes well in summer heat and insulates adequately under a mid-layer in shoulder-season cold.
Recycled Nylon Core — Lower-Impact Durability
The recycled nylon core delivers the durability and shape retention a base layer needs to survive multi-day trips and repeated washing, with a lower-impact material choice than virgin nylon. The recycled content doesn't compromise the fabric's performance — the Core Spun construction gives the same abrasion resistance and recovery as virgin nylon core, with less reliance on new petrochemical feedstock.
Year-Round Versatility
Built for the year-round uses where a lightweight Merino base layer is the right tool — spring skiing, summer backpacking, fall trail running, shoulder-season hiking, fall cycling, and shoulder-season climbing. The lightweight jersey handles the wide range of conditions across a full year without the overheat a heavyweight would develop in summer or the chill a pure synthetic would develop when the temperature drops. The Merino content stays fresh across multi-day trips; the flatlock seams stay comfortable under load.

Materials & Construction

Fabric Weight
Lightweight (All-Season — year-round versatility, not heavyweight)
Fabric Composition
88% Merino Wool, 12% Recycled Nylon. Exclusive of Decoration.
Next-To-Skin
100% Merino Wool (Core Spun places Merino wrap against the skin)
Seam Construction
Flatlock seams (minimize chafing under pack straps and harness)
Shoulder Seams
Offset shoulder seams (placed forward of natural shoulder line for pack-strap comfort)
Side Seams
Side seams wrap to front (clear of pack hip-belt and harness leg-strap pressure)
Country of Origin
Made in Vietnam
Washing
Machine wash warm on a gentle cycle. Wash with like colors — the Core Spun Merino-recycled nylon blend benefits from isolated washing to protect the fabric's moisture-management properties and the flatlock seams. Warm water is allowed on this lightweight jersey (warmer than the cold-only spec on the heavyweight base layers) because the lightweight knit tolerates the warmer wash that helps release body oils and sweat from a year-round workhorse piece. Use a mild, technical wash; avoid fabric softeners (they coat the Merino fibers and reduce natural moisture management).
Drying
Tumble dry low. The lightweight jersey knit and the Core Spun construction tolerate low-heat tumble drying without distorting the fabric's structure — low heat restores the loft of the Merino fibers and the recovery of the recycled nylon core. Do not tumble dry on medium or high heat; high heat can shrink the Merino fibers and degrade the flatlock seams. On the trail, line drying is acceptable for this lightweight jersey.
Bleach & Iron
Do not bleach. Cool iron as needed — do not iron decoration. Bleach breaks down Merino wool fibers and degrades the recycled nylon core's strength. Iron only on low heat and only on the non-decorated fabric areas; high heat can scorch the lightweight Merino jersey and damage the flatlock seams.
Dry Cleaning
Do not dry clean. The harsh solvents used in commercial dry cleaning strip the natural lanolin from Merino and degrade the recycled nylon core's integrity — both of which are core to the fabric's performance.
Storage
Store folded in a dry, breathable space. Merino's natural odor resistance means the same crew covers multiple wear days between washes, which extends the fabric's lifespan and makes this a true year-round piece rather than a single-trip base layer. Folded storage preserves the flatlock seams and the offset shoulder/side seam construction; hanging for long periods can stretch the lightweight jersey out at the shoulder.

Merino Layer System — SW016952

Built For

Spring Skiing
25° – 50°F
Late-season resort days and spring corn-snow skiing where the sun warms the slope and the chairlift ride is the only real cold exposure. The lightweight Merino jersey breathes on the warm descent without the clammy chill a synthetic develops on the cold chair; the flatlock seams lie smoothly under a shell and a pack; the offset shoulder seams don't dig into a pack strap on the boot-pack to the parking lot.
Summer Backpacking
40° – 75°F
Multi-day summer backpacking trips where temperatures swing from cold-alpine mornings to warm-afternoon valleys and the same crew needs to handle both. The lightweight Merino jersey breathes on the climb without overheating; the natural odor resistance means the same crew covers multiple days between washes; the recycled nylon core survives the abrasion of a multi-day pack-strap load and repeated laundering when the trip ends.
Fall Trail Running
35° – 60°F
Cool-morning trail runs and shoulder-season ultras where the temperature starts cold and ends warm and the base layer needs to handle both ends of the swing. The lightweight jersey wicks sweat on the climb without the chill a pure synthetic develops when the pace drops; the flatlock seams handle the high-rep arm swing of a trail stride without chafing under a hydration pack; the slim fit layers cleanly under a shell for the cold descent.
Shoulder-Season Hiking
30° – 65°F
Fall and spring day hikes where the temperature swings widely across the elevation profile and the base layer is the foundation of a layering system that adapts to the climb. The lightweight Merino jersey breathes on the uphill without the overheat a heavier crew would develop; the offset shoulder seams and flatlock construction lie smoothly under a daypack; the slim fit adds a clean layer under a fleece or a shell for the windy ridge.
Layer Over It

Build The Shoulder-Season System

The Classic All-Season Crew is the foundation piece of a year-round layering system. Layer a fleece or a light insulated mid over it for shoulder-season cold, add a shell for wind and weather on the ridge, and the lightweight Merino jersey handles the wide temperature swings across a full day. The slim fit layers cleanly under any mid or shell without the bunching a boxier base layer would create.

  • Light fleece or grid hoodie shoulder-season mid-layer
  • Lightweight insulated jacket cool-weather outer option
  • Softshell or wind shell wind protection for the ridge
  • Men's Hike PhD™ crew sock full-day rotation pair
Layer Under It

Pair With The All-Season Bottom

For the complete lightweight year-round system, pair this crew with the matching Classic All-Season bottom (or the Intraknit All-Season bottom for a 3D-knit upgrade). Same year-round weight philosophy, same Merino-first approach — a full-body base layer system tuned for the wide temperature range of spring through fall. The slim fit layers cleanly under hiking pants or running tights without bulk.

  • Men's Classic All-Season bottom matched lightweight system
  • Men's Intraknit™ All-Season bottom 3D-knit upgrade option
  • Men's Hike Light bottom warmer leg option
  • Men's Classic Thermal Merino bottom cold-weather upgrade
