Technology

Base Camp™
The North Face's most rugged gear line — designed to withstand abrasions, rough handling, and heavy use across years of travel and camp use
TPU Coating
Thermoplastic polyurethane coating on the back of the 1000D polyester face for water resistance and abrasion durability
Cleaning
Wipe the 1000D recycled polyester exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap. For interior food or drink spills, wipe immediately with a soft cloth, warm water, and mild soap — do not use bleach, solvents, or harsh detergents, which damage the TPU coating and the food-safe interior surfaces. Air the cooler open after each use before storage so moisture doesn't get trapped.
Drying
Air dry completely at room temperature with the lid open. The TPU coating on the body is highly water-resistant but can delaminate under high heat — never use a clothes dryer, hair dryer, or place the cooler near a radiator, campfire, or hot exhaust. Confirm both interior and exterior are fully dry before storage.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight with the lid slightly open or unlatched. Long-term storage with the lid sealed traps residual moisture and can cause the internal insulation to deteriorate or develop mildew. Confirm the interior is clean and dry before storing.
Insulation & Cold Retention
For best cold retention, pre-chill the cooler with ice a few hours before loading and use ice packs in addition to cubed ice. Avoid opening the lid frequently or leaving it open for long — every opening lets warm air in. Clean the interior after each use; food residue can foster bacterial growth and degrade cold performance.
TPU-Coated 1000D Body
The 1000D recycled polyester face with TPU coating is the same durable shell used on Base Camp Duffels — built for abrasions, rough handling, and heavy use. The TPU coating can be scratched by rough surfaces (rock, concrete) — avoid dragging the cooler across rough surfaces; lift by the top handle or shoulder strap. Reapply a PFC-free DWR spray to maintain surface water repellency when the face no longer beads.
Daisy-Chain Webbing & Bungee
The daisy-chain webbing on top offers lash points for additional gear — confirm webbing threads are intact before lashing heavy items. The bungee system can carry additional items on top — do not overload beyond what the elastic stretch range allows, and never lash items heavier than the cooler itself. Check the elastic tension over time; replace the bungee if it loses its snap-back.
Top Handle & Shoulder Strap
The top handle and shoulder strap carry the cooler. Lift using the top handle for short distances; use the shoulder strap (padded or webbed) for longer carries. Inspect the strap stitching and the handle webbing periodically — fabric can wear at the connection points. Don't lift a fully-loaded cooler by only the shoulder strap webbing; alternate with the top handle.
Latches & Hinges
The lid latches and hinges are the most-stressed parts of any cooler — confirm the lid is firmly latched before transporting. If the latches stiffen, rinse with fresh water and dry; grit and salt build up can corrode the latch hardware over time. Avoid forcing the lid past its stops.
Internal Secure-Zip Pocket
The internal secure-zip pocket helps keep items dry — not waterproof. Don't store electronics or items sensitive to moisture in this pocket during long trips with ice; the pocket is best for keys, snacks, dry snacks, and lip balm. Periodically brush grit from the zipper teeth and lubricate sparingly with silicone-based lubricant if the slider stiffens.
Drop-In Front Pocket
The external drop-in front pocket is convenient for quick-access items but is not sealed against water — don't store anything here that can't survive getting wet in heavy rain or a tipped cooler. Empty and dry the pocket before long-term storage.
Material Notes
Do not dry clean, bleach, iron, or use solvents on the TPU-coated 1000D polyester surface. Keep the cooler away from open flame and high heat sources (campfires, grills, hot car interiors). The non-PFC DWR finish is durable but will wear with heavy use — reapply a PFC-free DWR spray when water no longer beads on the face fabric.
