Women's Hedgehog 3 Mid Waterproof Boots
Women's Hedgehog 3 Mid Waterproof Boots
Mid-Cut Waterproof Hiking Boot · Hike / Trail / Backpacking

An update to a classic, the Women's Hedgehog 3 Mid Waterproof Boots offer more underfoot cushioning, a rugged design, and waterproof DRYVENT membranes — all of which make them perfect for hiking. The waterproof footwear incorporates a variety of advanced waterproofing materials, treatments, and processes: to help keep feet dry, internal waterproof membranes and adhesive and seam-seal constructions are used. The mid-cut height adds ankle support for a loaded pack, the resilient EVA midsole has 5 mm more cushioning under the forefoot than the previous version, and the SURFACE CTRL outsole grips both wet and dry surfaces for a long day on the trail.

Mixed-Material Upper
Mixed-material upper made with leather, synthetic leather, durable ripstop, and spacer mesh — the four-material construction is what gives the Hedgehog 3 its rugged feel without the weight of a full-leather boot. The leather adds abrasion resistance at the toe and heel, the synthetic leather reinforces high-wear areas, the ripstop adds tear resistance, and the spacer mesh breathes on a hot approach. The combination is light enough for a long day, sturdy enough to handle scree and talus.
LWG-Certified Leather
All leather is purchased from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries — the LWG is the global standard for responsible leather manufacturing, with ratings that cover water and energy use, waste management, and chemical traceability. The certification is the assurance that the leather in the upper meets an audited environmental and social standard rather than a one-off tannery claim.
DRYVENT™ Waterproof Membrane
Waterproof DRYVENT membrane — TNF's proprietary waterproof/breathable membrane, the spec'd choice for hiking footwear that handles wet trails, stream crossings, and full-day rain. The membrane is bonded to the upper and seam-sealed to close the stitch holes where water would otherwise sneak through. DRYVENT works with the same internal-membrane / seam-seal approach as the brand's rain shells, so the waterproofing tech is consistent across the brand's wet-weather lineup.
Multilayered Toe Overlays
Multilayered overlays for rugged toe and forefoot protection — the toe and forefoot panels are layered with synthetic leather and rubber pieces to handle rock contact, scree, and the trail's worst abuse. The multi-layer construction is the spec'd detail for any boot that sees real trail time; a single-layer toe wears through in a season. The overlays also add structure to the toe box, which keeps the foot stable on a steep descent.
Outdoor-Inspired Lacing
Outdoor-inspired webbing and laces — the webbing eyelets and the laces are styled for a technical, trail-ready look that matches the rest of the boot. The laces are the spec'd outdoor type: round or oval braid that holds a knot, runs smoothly through the eyelets, and resists fraying better than flat cotton laces. The lacing pattern runs cleanly to the toe for a customizable fit across the forefoot.
Updated Last for Comfort
Built on an updated last that offers comfort and consistent sizing — the last is the foot-shaped form the boot is built around, and the update is what gives the Hedgehog 3 a more accommodating fit than the previous version. The new last is sized more consistently across the run, which means less guessing between sizes when buying online. The fit is roomy in the toe box for a long descent, secure in the midfoot for a heel-lock lacing pattern.
EVA Midsole with More Forefoot Cushion
Resilient and comfortable EVA midsole has 5 mm more cushioning under the forefoot than the previous version — the upgrade is the spec'd improvement for the v3, addressing one of the most common complaints about v2 (under-cushioned forefoot on long descents). The added cushion reduces fatigue on a long day, absorbs impact on a rocky descent, and rebounds on the push-off. Single-density construction keeps the midfoot stable for a loaded pack.
8mm Heel/Toe Offset
8 mm heel/toe offset — a moderate drop that puts the foot in a slightly elevated-heel position for long approaches and loaded-pack hiking. The 8 mm offset is a touch more than the 6 mm of the Verto approach shoe, which makes the Hedgehog 3 more comfortable for a long day with a pack and less specialized for technical scrambling. The offset is what gives the boot its hike-friendly, all-day-comfort feel.
SURFACE CTRL™ Outsole
Durable SURFACE CTRL rubber outsole — TNF's proprietary rubber compound, the brand's spec'd choice for hiking and trail footwear. The lug pattern is the technical-spec design for mixed-trail terrain: deep enough to bite into soft ground, spaced enough to release mud and debris, and shaped to grip rock on a scramble. The SURFACE CTRL rubber balances grip and durability in a way that handles a full season of regular hiking without the lugs wearing flat.

Sustainability

Leather Sourcing
Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified tanneries
Remove Loose Dirt
Remove loose dirt and debris after each wear with a soft brush or a damp cloth — dried mud and trail grit work their way into the leather, the mesh, the laces, and the SURFACE CTRL lugs if left to sit. A quick once-over after a hike takes a minute and keeps the boots looking new. The brush gets into the lug pattern of the outsole, which is where the deepest grit hides.
Hand Wash
Hand wash in cold water with a mild soap or a technical footwear cleaner. Do not machine wash or tumble dry — the machine agitation will damage the DRYVENT membrane, the leather panels, the multilayered overlays, the EVA midsole, and the SURFACE CTRL outsole. The boots are built like technical hiking boots, not like canvas sneakers, and should be cleaned like one. A quick hand wash handles the majority of trail grime.
Air Dry
Air dry naturally at room temperature. Stuff the toe box with paper towels or a clean dry cloth to absorb moisture from the inside and hold the shape of the toe box. Loosen the laces and open the boot wide to allow airflow. Do not put in the dryer. Do not place near direct heat (radiator, fire, hair dryer). High heat delaminates the DRYVENT membrane, cracks the leather, and warps the midsole. Air drying takes longer but preserves the construction.
Restore DWR
When the mesh and leather upper start to absorb water instead of repelling it, re-treat with a spray-on DWR designed for hiking footwear. Reactivating the finish every few months keeps the boots handling light rain, stream splashes, and wet trail sections without soaking through. The DRYVENT membrane is still waterproof — the DWR is what makes the outer face shed water rather than saturating.
Leather Conditioning
Treat the leather and synthetic-leather panels periodically with a leather conditioner — the leather dries out with repeated wet/dry cycles, and conditioning keeps the surface supple and water-resistant. Apply the conditioner to a clean cloth rather than directly to the boot, and work it into the leather in small circular motions. Buff off the excess with a dry cloth.
Lace & Insole Care
Remove the insoles periodically and air them out separately — the insoles hold moisture from sweat, and airing them out prevents odor and mildew between wears. Replace the insoles when they lose their cushioning (typically every 6-12 months for a frequent hiker). The outdoor-inspired laces can be replaced individually if they fray; keeping spare laces in a pack is a small detail that saves a hike when a lace snaps mid-trail.
